In disaster management, it is essential to evaluate how dangerous the disasters are and how vulnerable our communities are to them. The Region Safety Index and the Region Safety Levels provide information about the level of safety in a local area against disasters, but this information is not enough for use in disaster management. This study proposes a vulnerability assessment method that utilizes the concept of a vulnerability function to analyze disaster records, weather data, and statistical data using a GIS program. We identified regions vulnerable to heavy rain using vulnerability figures and analyzed time-series changes in region vulnerability. This vulnerability assessment provides specific information on disasters and can be used by disaster managers as empirical information for planning and implementing disaster management plans.

This study evaluates the usefulness of haptic guidance and investigates the effect of inaccuracy in haptic guidance on the task performance. Both position inaccuracy and orientation inaccuracy were considered. The peg-in-hole task was conducted as a benchmark test for evaluation, and a psychophysical study was performed and analyzed on eight inaccuracy combinations. In conclusion, the haptic guidance showed outstanding performance in terms of task completion time, position tracking performance, contact force, and total force, but the haptic guidance with severe orientation inaccuracy caused serious complications.
An encoder–decoder switch network for purchase prediction
Park, Chanyoung,Kim, Donghyun,Yu, Hwanjo Elsevier 2019 Knowledge-based systems Vol.185 No.-

Abstract

Users in e-commerce tend to click on items of their interest. Eventually, the more frequently an item is clicked by a user, the more likely the item will be purchased by the user after all. However, what if a user clicked on every item only once before purchases? This is a frequently observed user behavior in reality, but predicting which of the clicked items will be purchased is a challenging task. This paper addresses a practical yet widely overlooked task of predicting purchase items within a non-duplicate click session, i.e., a session in which every item is clicked only once. We propose an encoder–decoder neural architecture to simultaneously model users’ click and purchase behaviors. The encoder captures a user’s intent contained in the user’s click session, and the decoder, which is equipped with pointer network via a switch gate, extracts relevant clicked items for future purchase candidates. To the best of our knowledge, our work is the first to address the task of purchase prediction given non-duplicate click sessions. Experiments demonstrate that our proposed method outperforms the state-of-the-art purchase prediction methods by up to 18% in terms of recall.

The effect of substrate rotation speed on the phase forming behavior and microstructural variation of 8 wt% yttria ($Y_2O_3$) stabilized $ZrO_2$ (8YSZ) coatings as a thermal barrier coating has been investigated. 8YSZ coatings with $100{\sim}200{\mu}m$ thickness were deposited by electron beam-physical vapor deposition onto a super alloy (Ni-Cr-Co-Al) substrate with a bond coating (NiCo-CrAlY). The width of the columnar grains of the 8YSZ coatings increased with increasing substrate rotation speed from 1 to 30 rpm at a substrate temperature range of $900{\sim}950^{\circ}C$. In spite of the different growth behaviors of coatings with different substrate rotation speeds, the phases of each coating were not changed remarkably. Even after post heat treatments with various conditions of the coated specimens fabricated at 20 rpm, only a change of color was noticeable, without any remarkable change in the phase or microstructure.

Mammalian MST2 kinase plays an important role in cell proliferation, survival, and apoptosis. In search of interacting proteins of MST2, we found that estrogen receptor alpha (ER alpha) co-immunoprecipitates with MST2 and its adaptor protein human Salvador (hSAV). Using reporter assays, we observed that overexpression of MST2 and hSAV leads to ligand-independent activation of ER alpha in human breast cancer MCF-7 cells, which was attenuated by the knockdown of hSAV. Furthermore, using truncated mutants of hSAV, we observed that the C terminus of hSAV is necessary and sufficient for the induction of ER alpha transactivation. The expression of hSAV and MST2 results in the phosphorylation of ER alpha at serine residues 118 and 167 and represses ER alpha expression. We then investigated the incidence of MST2 and ER alpha expression with other tumor biomarkers using commercially available tissue microarrays. Among 40 breast cancer samples analyzed, 60% (24 out of 40) expressed MST2. Nineteen among the 40 cases were MST2-positive and ER alpha-negative, implying a correlation between expressions of MST2 with loss of ER alpha in breast tumor samples. This study suggests that MST and hSAV act as novel co-regulators of ER alpha and may play an important role in breast cancer pathogenesis.
