Background: Hemangioma is the most common benign hepatic tumor. Many hepatic hemangiomas tend to be found incidentally, but should be differentiated from malignant tumors. We report an interesting case of hepatic hemangioma in patient who has high risks of hepatocellular carcinoma. Case: A 52-year-old woman, who was a chronic alcoholic abuser and hepatitis C virus carrier with no treatment experience, was admitted due to diarrhea. The patient had suffered from intermittent abdominal pain in the right subcostal area for recent 3 months. Also the patient had easy bruising and frequent epistaxis. She had used oral contraceptives for almost 20 years. Systolic blood pressure was 160 mmHg and diastolic blood pressure was 80 mmHg. Body temperature was normal. Physical examination revealed icteric sclerae and tenderness in right upper quadrant of the abdomen. Laboratory study showed platelet count of 31,000/ul, AST/ALT of 302/127 IU/L, and total bilirubin of 2.7 mg/dl. 3-phased contrast-enhanced abdominal computed tomography (CT) revealed a 4 cm × 4 cm sized hepatic mass involving both segment 5 and 6. Abdominal CT finding suggested hepatic hemangioma, however, typical finding of hemagioma was unclear, therefore, could not rule out the malignancy. Since she had risk factors for hepatocellular carcinoma, abdominal ultrasonography was performed for further evaluation. But abdominal ultrasonography also showed atypical finding. The confirmative diagnosis could be done by dynamic magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) using primovist®, which is an innovative liver cell-specific contrast medium. Dynamic MRI presented peripheral globular enhancement and a centripetal fill-in pattern, confirmatory findings of hepatic hemangioma, on the delayed image. The patient got relief from abdominal pain and diarrhea during admission, now is being followed-up at a general out-patient clinics. Conclusions: Hemangiomas with atypical abdominal CT and ultrasonographic findings in patients with high risks of hepatocellular carcinoma can be easily characterized with primovist-enhanced dynamic MRI.

An attempt was made to isolate Salmonella(S) organisms from a total of 4,587 fecal samples of birds during the period from May 1987 to March 1988, and serotype and biotypes of the isolates were also investigated. One hundred and sixty-six Salmonella strains were isolated from 151(3.3%) of 4,587 fecal samples of birds, and their serotype was all identified as S typhimurium var copenhagen. The positive samples of S typhimurium var copenhagen were 149 samples(5.1%) in pigeons and 2 samples (0.8%) in aquatic birds. No Salmonella was obtained from ducks, pheasant, and other birds. The isolation frequencies of S typhimurium var copenhagen from pigeons varied from 1.1 to 12.8% at 5 parks, it was higher in September and November. Biotypes of 166 S typhimurium var copenhagen strains isolated from pigeons and aquatic birds were all biotype 10 according to Brandis' method, and were biotype 25hi (78.3%), 27 hi (14.5%), 25 fhi (3.6%), 25 bhi (1.8%), 27 bhi (0.6%), 27 hiz (0.6%), and 9 hi (0.6%) according to Duguid's scheme. Appearance of different biotypes indicated the occurrence of exotic infection sources on the parks.

A facile method for polyimide (PI) coating with enhanced hydrophobicity through the deposition of morphology controlled PI particles is presented. An electrospraying process combined with in situ imidization was employed in the fabrication of the PI particles for controllable morphologies as well as hydrophobic multilayered films. We confirmed that in situ imidization accompanying evaporation of the solvent affected the surface morphology of the PI particles during the reactive electrospraying process. The competition of in situ imidization and solvent evaporation in the heating process induces not only the formation of a dimple structure but also the formation of a hollow structure, which was affected by the droplet size. The multilayered film produced by deposition of the PI particles had a microstructured surface with spherical protrusion, micro-dimples, and micro-channels. The multilayered film of PI particles exhibited a hydrophobic surface with water contact angle of 151° due to the microstructured surface of PI coating which was simply but effectively generated by reactive electrospray technique.

Graphic Abstract

We report a facile method to produce microstructured superhydrophobic coatings with morphology controlled polyimide particles via a reactive electrospraying method.

Background and aimsEntecavir (ETV) is a potent nucleoside analogue with high genetic barrier to resistance. In this study, real-life clinical experiences in the long-term use of ETV and the durability of its off-treatment effectiveness were analyzed.Materials and methodsThis study was based on a large real-life cohort of 2240 chronic hepatitis B patients treated with ETV between January 2006 and December 2012 using a centralized electronic data repository.ResultsAmong 2240 patients, 804 patients were treatment naive and underwent ETV monotherapy. Their mean treatment duration was 712493 days, with a cumulative proportion of patients achieving HBV DNA less than 300copies/ml in 85.8, 95.7, and 97.6% at years 1, 2, and 3, respectively. Predictors for earlier virologic response were female sex, lower HBV DNA, higher alanine transaminase, lower platelet count, and HBeAg negativity at baseline. In patients who achieved virologic response and HBeAg loss, the cumulative relapse rate was 91.3% in 2 years after the cessation of treatment. During the treatment, 34 patients developed hepatocellular carcinoma, among whom 30 patients had cirrhosis before treatment initiation. ETV treatment showed efficient virologic response as the treatment duration was extended, but off-treatment efficacy was not durable, and the antiviral treatment showed some limitation in preventing hepatocellular carcinoma among liver cirrhosis patients, implying that treatment cessation should be taken into consideration more carefully.ConclusionThis study from a real-life cohort may provide data on treating chronic hepatitis B patients more close to everyday clinical practice.

We demonstrated that arthritis could be visualized noninvasively using hydrophobically modified glycol chitosan nanoparticles labeled with Cy5.5 (HGC-Cy5.5) and an optical imaging system. Activated macrophages expressing Mac-1 molecules effectively phagocytosed HGC-Cy5.5, which formed spherical nanoparticles under physiologic conditions. We estimated the applicability of HGC-Cy5.5 to quantitative analysis of arthritis development and progression. Near-infrared fluorescence images, captured after HGC-Cy5.5 injection in mice with collagen-induced arthritis, showed stronger fluorescence intensity in the active arthritis group than in the nonarthritis group. According to the progression of arthritis in both collagen-induced arthritis and collagen antibody-induced arthritis models, total photon counts (TPCs) increased in parallel with the clinical arthritis index. Quantitative analysis of fluorescence after treatment with methotrexate showed a significant decrease in TPC in a dose-dependent manner. Histologic evaluation confirmed that the mechanism underlying selective accumulation of HGC-Cy5.5 within synovitis tissues included enhanced phagocytosis of the probe by Mac-1-expressing macrophages as well as enhanced permeability through leaky vessels. These results suggest that optical imaging of arthritis using HGC-Cy5.5 can provide an objective measurement of disease activity and, at the same time, therapeutic responses in rheumatoid arthritis.

Cisplatin, a platinum chelate with potent antitumor activity against cancers of the testis, ovary, urinary bladder, prostate, and head and neck, has adverse effects on the kidney, bone marrow, and digestive organs, and its use is particularly limited by nephropathy as a side effect. In the present study, safflower seed extract was administered to a mouse model of cisplatin-induced acute renal failure to investigate its activity. Cisplatin (20 mg/kg body weight) was administered by intraperitoneal injection to mice that had received oral safflower seed extract (100 or 200 mg/kg body weight per day) for the preceding 2 days. Three days after the cisplatin injection, serum and renal biochemical factors; oxidative stress, inflammation, and apoptosis-related protein expression; and histological findings were evaluated. Cisplatin-treated control mice showed body-weight, food intake and water intake loss, and increased kidney weight, whereas the administration of safflower seed extract attenuated these effects (p < 0: 05, p < 0: 01). Moreover, safflower seed extract significantly decreased the renal functional parameters urea nitrogen and creatinine in the serum (p < 0: 05 and p < 0: 01, respectively). Safflower seed extract also significantly reduced the enhanced levels of reactive oxygen species in the kidney observed following cisplatin treatment, with significance. The expression of proteins related to the anti-oxidant defense system in the kidney was down-regulated following cisplatin treatment, but safflower seed extract significantly up-regulated the expression of the anti-oxidant enzyme catalase. Furthermore, safflower seed extract reduced the overexpression of phosphor (p)-p38, nuclear factor-kappa B p65, cyclooxygenase-2, inducible nitric oxide synthase, ATR, p-p53, Bax, and caspase 3 proteins, and mice treated with safflower seed extract exhibited less renal histological damage. These results provide important evidence that safflower seed extract exerts a pleiotropic effect on several oxidative stress-and apoptosis-related parameters and has a renoprotective effect in cisplatin-treated mice.

On the basis of the results of frontier orbital considerations, 4-substituted-2′-pyridyltriazoles were designed to serve as ancillary ligands in 2-phenylpyridine main ligand containing heteroleptic iridium(III) complexes that display deep blue phosphorescence emission. The iridium(III) complexes, Ir1–Ir7, prepared using the new ancillary ligands, were found to display structured, highly quantum efficient (Φp = 0.20–0.42) phosphorescence with emission maxima in the blue to deep blue 448–456 nm at room temperature. In accord with predictions based on frontier orbital considerations, the complexes were observed to have emission properties that are dependent on the electronic nature of substituents at the C-4 position of the pyridine moiety of the ancillary ligand. Importantly, placement of an electron-donating methyl group at C-4′ of the pyridine ring of the 5-(pyridine-2′-yl)-3-trifluoromethyl-1,2,4-triazole ancillary ligand leads to an iridium(III) complex that displays a deep blue phosphorescence emission maximum at 448 nm in both the liquid and film states at room temperature. Finally, an OLED device, constructed using an Ir-complex containing the optimized ancillary ligand as the dopant, was found to emit deep blue color with a CIE of 0.15, 0.18, which is close to the perfect goal of 0.15, 0.15.

Graphic Abstract

ACS Electronic Supporting Info

Locally-tailored structure of an elastomeric substrate for stretchable circuits
Park, Chan Woo,Jung, Soon Won,Na, Bock Soon,Oh, Ji-Young,Park, Nae-Man,Seok Lee, Sang,Bon Koo, Jae Institute of Physics 2016 Semiconductor science and technology Vol.31 No.2

We demonstrate a new process for fabricating a hybrid elastomeric polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) substrate, which can provide a high ratio (as large as ∼50) of the elastic modulus between the active device region and the interconnect area, as well as a locally tailored surface profile for each region. For this process, a Si master mold with a dual surface profile is prepared, where locally flat regions are distributed within a wavy-surfaced area. The stiffer elastomeric islands for active devices are formed on the flat regions by photolithography of a photo-patternable and hard PDMS layer (E?∼?160 MPa), over which a soft PDMS layer (E?∼?2 to 3 MPa) is casted. By releasing the whole PDMS layer from the mold, a hybrid silicone substrate with stiff and flat islands embedded within a soft and wavy matrix is obtained. In this hybrid structure, active devices located on the stiff regions can provide high reliability under stretched conditions, while most strain is accommodated by wavy interconnects within the soft area. Such beneficial effects are demonstrated by organic thin film transistors produced on the hybrid substrate.
