Hydrophobization of cotton fabric by Gliding Arc plasma discharge

        Pavel Cerny,Petr Bartos,Pavel Olsan,Petr Spatenka 한국물리학회 2019 Current Applied Physics Vol.19 No.2

The surface modification in order to obtain hydrophobic cotton fabrics was carried out using air/HMDSO Gliding Arc plasma discharge. The dependence of the surface wettability on used process parameters, such as air flow, sample distance and treatment time were investigated. The wettability of cotton fabrics was evaluated by the drop test method by measuring the time of droplet absorption and water contact angle (WCA). The changes in the surface morphology were examined by optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The treated hydrophobic fabrics were subjected to the analysis of chemical composition of the applied coatings using the ATR-FTIR spectroscopy. Hydrophobic cotton fabrics were obtained, especially with a high resistance to static wetting. In addition, the treated cotton fabrics were tested using a spray test measurement and were subjected to multiple washing.

      • Oxidation Stability and Antioxidant Capacity of Lubricants Measured by a Pressure DSC

Jaroslav CERNY 한국트라이볼로지학회 2002 한국트라이볼로지학회 학술대회 Vol.2002 No.10

A methodology was developed for evaluation of oxidation stability of base stocks and engine oils. Analytical procedures for both classes of lubricants were based on the ASTM standards D 6186 and/or E 2009. The procedures were applied to a set of engine oils of the SAE 5W-30 specification, and to a set of several hydrocracked and solvent neutral base oils, both with and without addition of antioxidant. A potential of a pressure DSC for diagnostic purposed was also demonstrated by monitoring the engine oil ageing during its operation in heavy-duty engine.

Complement Receptor 1 Expression on Mouse Erythrocytes Mediates Clearance of Streptococcus pneumoniae by Immune Adherence

        Li, Jie,Wang, Jennifer P.,Ghiran, Ionita,Cerny, Anna,Szalai, Alexander J.,Briles, David E.,Finberg, Robert W. American Society for Microbiology 2010 Infection and immunity Vol.78 No.7

<B>ABSTRACT</B><P>Complement-containing immune complexes can be presented to phagocytes by human erythrocytes bearing complement receptor 1 (CR1). Although this has long been assumed to be a mechanism by which humans are able to protect themselves from “extracellular” bacteria such as pneumococci, there is little direct evidence. In these studies we have investigated this question by comparing results for erythrocytes from transgenic mice expressing human CR1 on their erythrocytes to the results for wild-type mouse erythrocytes that do not express CR1. We demonstrate that human CR1 expression on murine erythrocytes allows immune adherence to beads opsonized with either mouse or human serum as a source of complement. The role of CR1 in immune adherence was supported by studies showing that it was blocked by the addition of antibody to human CR1. Furthermore, human CR1 expression enhances the immune adherence of opsonized pneumococci to erythrocytes <I>in vitro</I>, and the pneumococci attached to erythrocytes via CR1 can be transferred <I>in vitro</I> to live macrophages. Even more importantly, we observed that if complement-opsonized pneumococci are injected intravenously with CR1+ mouse erythrocytes into wild-type mice (after a short <I>in vitro</I> incubation), they are cleared faster than opsonized pneumococci similarly injected with wild-type mouse erythrocytes. Finally, we have shown that the intravenous (i.v.) injection of pneumococci into CR1+ mice also results in more rapid blood clearance than in wild-type mice. These data support that immune adherence via CR1 on erythrocytes likely plays an important role in the clearance of opsonized bacteria from human blood.</P>

      • Tree growth and competition in a post‐logging <i>Quercus mongolica</i> forest on Mt. Sobaek, South Korea

        Dolezal, Jiri,Song, Jong‐,Suk,Altman, Jan,Janecek, Stepan,Cerny, Tomas,Srutek, Miroslav,Kolbek, Jiri Springer Japan 2009 Ecological research Vol.24 No.2

<P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>Secondary woodlands in South Korea cover most mountains from low to middle elevations. While general patterns of forest succession are well understood, little is known about mechanisms of stand recovery after disturbance. We examined the spatio‐temporal variations in establishment, growth, size inequality, and mode of competition among trees in a 50‐year‐old post‐logging <I>Quercus mongolica</I>‐dominated stand. We further compared the growth and stem allometry of single trees, presumably of seed origin, with multi‐stemmed trees resprouting from stumps. <I>Q. mongolica</I> formed the upper canopy 16–22 m tall, 88.3% of total stand basal area, and 36.2% of total stem density, with most trees established during the first post‐logging decade (51.2% were resprouts). During the first three decades, the <I>Q. mongolica</I> recruits grew exponentially, and disproportionately more in diameter than few older reserved trees left after the last cutting. This substantially decreased size inequality. The reverse trend was observed from 1994 to 2004: larger trees grow more, indicating an increasing asymmetry of competition for light. Neighborhood analysis revealed that when target trees had more or larger neighbors, their exponential phase of growth was reduced and maximum size was decreased. After the 50 years of stand development, more than 70% of <I>Q. mongolica</I> showed growth decline as a result of competitive stress, and mortality was about 30%, concentrated in smaller size classes. Compared to single stems, resprouts within clones do not seem to compete less asymmetric as might be expected based on studies of clonal herbaceous plants and physiological integration within genets. As <I>Q. mongolica</I> was also negatively affected by competition from woody species currently prevailing in the lower tree stratum (<I>Tilia amurensis, Acer mono, Fraxinus rhynchophylla, Acer pseudosieboldianum</I>), we predict the stand will become increasingly dominated by these more shade‐tolerant trees.</P>

      • Three-dimensional two-pion source image from Pb+Pb collisions at sNN=17.3 GeV: New constraints for source breakup dynamics

        NA49 Collaboration,Alt, C.,Anticic, T.,Baatar, B.,Barna, D.,Bartke, J.,Betev, L.,BiaBkowska, H.,Blume, C.,Boimska, B.,Botje, M.,Bracinik, J.,Buni, P.,Cerny, V.,Christakoglou, P.,Chung, P.,Chvala, O.,C North-Holland Pub. Co 2010 Physics letters: B Vol.685 No.1

Source imaging methodology is used to provide a three-dimensional two-pion source function for mid-rapidity pion pairs with pT<70 MeV/c in central (0-7%) Pb + Pb collisions at sNN=17.3 GeV. Prominent non-Gaussian tails are observed in the pion pair transverse momentum (outward) and in the beam (longitudinal) directions. Model calculations reproduce them with the assumption of Bjorken longitudinal boost invariance and transverse flow blast-wave dynamics; they also yield a proper time for breakup and emission duration for the pion source.
