• The Implication of Substance P in the Development of Tendinopathy: A Case Control Study

        Han, Soo-Hong,Choi, Wonchul,Song, Jiye,Kim, Jaehee,Lee, Seungyong,Choi, Youngrak,Byun, Seong-Eun,Ahn, Taekeun,Ahn, Heejung,Ding, Catherine,Baik, Lloyd,Ward, Spencer,Ting, Kang,Lee, Soonchul MDPI 2017 INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF MOLECULAR SCIENCES Vol.18 No.6

It was reported that substance P had beneficial effects in the healing of acute tendon injury. However, the relationship between substance P and degenerative tendinopathy development remains unclear. The purpose of this study was to determine the role of substance P in the pathogenesis of tendinopathy. Healthy and tendinopathy tendon were harvested from human and tenocytes were cultured individually. The expression levels of genes associated with tendinopathy were compared. Next, substance P was exogenously administered to the healthy tenocyte and the effect was evaluated. The results showed that tendinopathy tenocytes had higher levels of COL3A1, MMP1, COX2, SCX, ACTA2, and substance P gene expression compared to healthy tenocytes. Next, substance P treatment on the healthy tenocyte displayed similar changes to that of the tendinopathy tenocytes. These differences between the two groups were also determined by Western blot. Additionally, cells with substance P had the tendinopathy change morphologically although cellular proliferation was significantly higher compared to that of the control group. In conclusion, substance P enhanced cellular proliferation, but concomitantly increased immature collagen (type 3 collagen). Substance P plays a crucial role in tendinopathy development and could be a future therapeutic target for treatment.

Effect of Irradiation of Red Radish Seeds on the Seed Viability and Functional Properties of Sprouts

        Catherine K. Waje,Juhwan Park,Guiran Kim,Yu Ri Kim,Bumsoo Han,Yeon-Kyung Lee,Kwang-Deog Moon,Joong-Ho Kwon 한국식품과학회 2009 Food Science and Biotechnology Vol.18 No.2

Red radish seeds were irradiated at doses up to 8 kGy using electron beam (e-beam) and gamma ray (γ-ray). The seed viability and functional properties (carotenoid, chlorophyll, ascorbic acid, and total phenol) of sprouts grown from these irradiated seeds were evaluated. High germination percentage (≥97%) was observed in seeds irradiated at ≤5 kGy, but the yield ratio and sprout length significantly decreased with increased irradiation dose. Irradiation at ≥6 kGy resulted in curling of the sprout roots. Sprouting enhanced the functional properties of red radish seeds as indicated by the increased carotenoid, chlorophyll, ascorbic acid, and total phenol contents during germination. However, radiation treatment hampered the growth of seeds resulting in underdeveloped sprouts with decreased carotenoid, chlorophyll, ascorbic acid, and total phenol contents. In general, e-beam and γ-ray irradiation of red radish seeds showed similar effects on the seed viability and functional properties of sprouts. Postharvest storage reduced the functional quality of sprouts.

      • Identifying Opportunities to Attract and Manage Quality of the Academic and Social Experiences of International Students

Han, You-Kyung,Lee, Catherine Dakyung 한국교육행정학회 2016 Journal of Educational Administration and Policy Vol.1 No.1

The purpose of this study is to inform the direction of programs and policies aimed at improving the academic and social experiences of international students attending Korean universities. The researches that were conducted previously on the internationalization of higher education in Korea—which is largely limited to international students’ motivations for and satisfaction with studying in Korea—offers limited guidance for Korean policymakers and university leaders interested in enhancing the quality of international students’ experience. To overcome the lack of research in this area and fill this gap, the authors of this study administer a survey to 91 international students attending the University of Iowa (UI). This survey asked international students to consider their motivations for studying abroad and choosing IU, the quality of their academic and social experiences, and their anticipated plans following graduation. Results from this survey are compared to responses that Byun et al. (2011) obtained using a similar survey administered to international students at Korea University (KU). The authors draw four main conclusions from the results of this study. First, additional investments in online, promotional materials and scholarship opportunities may increase the visibility and affordability of Korean universities for international students. Second, specialized curriculum accompanied by ongoing supervision may help international students to develop greater knowledge related to a specific field or discipline, thereby enhancing their academic experiences. Third, on- and off-campus internship experiences may help to induce international students to seek employment opportunities in Korea following graduation. Finally, initiatives aimed at improving understanding of relationships with international students may help to reduce discrimination they face from peers and university staff.

The effects of celebrity‑brand congruence and publicity on consumer attitudes and buying behavior

Jae Han Jay Min,Hyo Jung Julie Chang,Tun-Min (Catherine) Jai,Morgan Ziegler 한국의류학회 2019 Fashion and Textiles Vol.6 No.1

Marketers use celebrity endorsements to make advertisements believable and to enhance consumer recognition of the brand name. However, once a direct link has been formed from a celebrity to a brand, the negative information about the celebrity may reflect on to the endorsed brand. Applying the S-O-R model and the balance theory, the purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of celebrity-brand congruence and publicity on consumers’ attitudes toward the celebrity and brand as well as their buying intention. A survey of a 2 (congruence vs. incongruence) × 2 (positive vs. negative publicity) experimental design was conducted for this study. A total of 120 female Millennial consumers answered the survey and 105 surveys with usable data were collected. The mean age of the participants was 24 years old (SD = 3.28). Results found that the celebrity-brand congruence and publicity play a significant role in consumer behavior related to attitudes toward the celebrity and brand/product, as well as buying intention. Thus, retail marketers need to allocate more investigation into celebrity endorsements that match with brand image that can lead to long-term, positive partnerships.

Egg phospholipids exert an inhibitory effect on intestinal cholesterol absorption in mice

        Yoojin Lee,Catherine Y. Han,Minkyung Bae,Young-Ki Park,Ji-Young Lee 한국영양학회 2019 Nutrition Research and Practice Vol.13 No.4

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Consumption of cholesterol-rich foods, such as eggs, has a minimal effect on circulating cholesterol levels in healthy humans. To gain insight, we investigated whether phospholipids rich in eggs (EPL) interfere with intestinal cholesterol absorption in vivo. MATERIALS/METHODS: To investigate the acute effect of EPL on intestinal cholesterol absorption, male C57BL/6J mice were orally administered with 6, 11, or 19 mg of EPL for three days. We also tested the effect of chronic EPL consumption on cholesterol metabolism in the small intestine and the liver in mice with diet-induced hypercholesterolemia. Male C57BL/6J mice were fed a high fat/high cholesterol (HF/HC; 35% fat, 0.25% cholesterol, w/w) diet for 4 weeks to induce hypercholesterolemia, and subsequently the mice were either fed 0, 0.4 or 0.8% (w/w) of EPL for 6 weeks. RESULTS: Intestinal cholesterol absorption was significantly decreased by the highest dose of acute EPL administration compared to control. Chronic EPL supplementation did not significantly alter intestinal cholesterol absorption nor plasma levels of total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol. In the small intestine and the liver, EPL supplementation minimally altered the expression of genes which regulate cellular cholesterol levels. CONCLUSION: Although chronic EPL consumption was not able to counteract hypercholesterolemia in HF/HC-fed mice, acute EPL administration decreased intestinal cholesterol absorption. This study provides in vivo evidence that acute administration of PLs in eggs prevent cholesterol absorption in the intestine, suggesting a mechanism for a minimal effect of egg consumption on circulating cholesterol levels.

Forecasting of the COVID-19 pandemic situation of Korea

        Goo, Taewan,Apio, Catherine,Heo, Gyujin,Lee, Doeun,Lee, Jong Hyeok,Lim, Jisun,Han, Kyulhee,Park, Taesung Korea Genome Organization 2021 Genomics & informatics Vol.19 No.1

For the novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), predictive modeling, in the literature, uses broadly susceptible exposed infected recoverd (SEIR)/SIR, agent-based, curve-fitting models. Governments and legislative bodies rely on insights from prediction models to suggest new policies and to assess the effectiveness of enforced policies. Therefore, access to accurate outbreak prediction models is essential to obtain insights into the likely spread and consequences of infectious diseases. The objective of this study is to predict the future COVID-19 situation of Korea. Here, we employed 5 models for this analysis; SEIR, local linear regression (LLR), negative binomial (NB) regression, segment Poisson, deep-learning based long short-term memory models (LSTM) and tree based gradient boosting machine (GBM). After prediction, model performance comparison was evelauated using relative mean squared errors (RMSE) for two sets of train (January 20, 2020-December 31, 2020 and January 20, 2020-January 31, 2021) and testing data (January 1, 2021-February 28, 2021 and February 1, 2021-February 28, 2021) . Except for segmented Poisson model, the other models predicted a decline in the daily confirmed cases in the country for the coming future. RMSE values' comparison showed that LLR, GBM, SEIR, NB, and LSTM respectively, performed well in the forecasting of the pandemic situation of the country. A good understanding of the epidemic dynamics would greatly enhance the control and prevention of COVID-19 and other infectious diseases. Therefore, with increasing daily confirmed cases since this year, these results could help in the pandemic response by informing decisions about planning, resource allocation, and decision concerning social distancing policies.
