Public opinion and the end of apartheid

        Julio F Carrión,Stuart J. Kaufman 한국외국어대학교 국제지역연구센터 2018 International Area Studies Review Vol.21 No.2

Why did whites in South Africa come to support the dismantling of the apartheid system that gave them a monopoly of political power? We use a reformulated version of symbolic politics to address this puzzle, showing that white attitudes toward political change were primarily driven by symbolic predispositions regarding race, ideology, party, and specific leaders, as well as various sorts of threat perceptions. Strong attachments to the National Party and de Klerk, low perceptions of threat, more tolerant racial attitudes, and more socially and politically liberal values increased the likelihood of whites supporting policies consistent with the ending of apartheid. We also find that assessments of the economy, both personal and national, have no influence on this attitude. We use South Africa’s Human Sciences Research Council data collected during the crucial 1991–1992 period.

Clinical Features of Eosinophilic Esophagitis: A Single Center Experience in Ecuador

        Fabián Vásconez Muñoz,Pamela Hernández Almeida,Estefanía Carrión-Jaramillo,Andrea Vásconez Montalvo 대한소아소화기영양학회 2022 Pediatric gastroenterology, hepatology & nutrition Vol.25 No.4

Purpose: Data on eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) in South America is scarce. Moreover, no studies are available in Ecuador. We evaluated the clinical, endoscopic, and histological characteristics of Ecuadorian children with EoE. Methods: Medical records of 2,711 children who underwent upper gastrointestinal endoscopy (UGE) between 2009 and 2020 at Hospital Metropolitano de Quito, Ecuador were reviewed. Esophageal mucosal biopsies were obtained from 72 patients and the features of 35 children with EoE were described. EoE was diagnosed when there were more than 15 eosinophils in the esophagus, per high power field. Results: EoE was diagnosed in 35 children (9.4±4.5 years) with a male predominance (74%). Abdominal pain (51.4%) and vomiting (31.4%) were dominant symptoms. A history of allergic diseases was noted in 47.1% of the children, which mainly included allergic rhinitis (37.1%) and atopic dermatitis (11.4%). The most common endoscopic findings were furrowing (82.9%) and edema (74.3%). All patients were initially treated with proton-pump inhibitors (PPIs). Those who did not respond to PPIs received steroids (5.7%) and diet therapy (5.7%), and five patients were referred to an allergist. Clinical and histological resolution was observed in 65% of the patients who underwent a second UGE after 6–8 weeks of PPI. Conclusion: Our study describes the clinical features of pediatric EoE in Ecuador. This is the first retrospective study in Ecuador that describes the clinical, endoscopic, and histological manifestations of EoE in a small pediatric population. Almost half of the children who underwent a biopsy had EoE.

Management of large class II lesions in molars: how to restore and when to perform surgical crown lengthening?

        Ana Belén Dablanca-Blanco,Juan Blanco-Carrión,Benjamín Martín-Biedma,Purificación Varela-Patiño,Alba Bello-Castro,Pablo Castelo-Baz 대한치과보존학회 2017 Restorative Dentistry & Endodontics Vol.42 No.3

The restoration of endodontic tooth is always a challenge for the clinician, not only due to excessive loss of tooth structure but also invasion of the biological width due to large decayed lesions. In this paper, the 7 most common clinical scenarios in molars with class II lesions ever deeper were examined. This includes both the type of restoration (direct or indirect) and the management of the cavity margin, such as the need for deep margin elevation (DME) or crown lengthening. It is necessary to have the DME when the healthy tooth remnant is in the sulcus or at the epithelium level. For caries that reaches the connective tissue or the bone crest, crown lengthening is required. Endocrowns are a good treatment option in the endodontically treated tooth when the loss of structure is advanced.

The Influence of Levetiracetam in Cognitive Performance in Healthy Individuals: Neuropsychological, Behavioral and Electrophysiological Approach

        Julio Cesar Magalhães,Mariana Gongora,Renan Vicente,Juliana Bittencourt,Guaraci Tanaka,Bruna Velasques,Silmar Teixeira,Gledys Morato,Luis F. Basile,Oscar Arias-Carrión,Fernando A.M.S Pompeu,Mauricio C 대한정신약물학회 2015 CLINICAL PSYCHOPHARMACOLOGY AND NEUROSCIENCE Vol.13 No.1

Objective: The present study sought to analyze the influence of Levetiracetam (LEV) in cognitive performance by identifying the changes produced by LEV in reaction time, in neuropsychological assessment of attention and memory and in absolute theta power in frontal activity. Methods: Twelve healthy subjects (5 men and 7 women; mean age, 30.08 years, standard deviation, 4.71) were recruited for this study. The neuropsychological tests: Trail Making Test (A and B), Digit Span (direct and indirect numerical orders/working memory); Stroop test (inhibitory control of attention); Tower of London (planning and decision-making) and a quantitative electroencephalography were applied in 2 different days after and before the participants ingested the capsule of placebo or 500 mg LEV. Results: A two-way-ANOVA was implemented to observe the interaction between conditions (placebo or LEV 500 mg) and moments (pre- and post-ingestion of LEV or placebo). The data were analyzed by the SPSS statistical package (p<0.05). For the neuropsychological parameter, the Trail Making Test (A) was the only test that showed significant difference for condition in the task execution time (p=0.026). Regarding the reaction time in the behavioral parameter, an interaction between both factors (p=0.034) was identified through a two-way-ANOVA (condition versus moment). Electrophysiological measures showed a significant interaction for electrodes: F7, F3, and FZ. Conclusion: The findings showed that LEV promotes an important cognitive enhancement in the executive functions.

        Redefining ‘Labor’ in Beijing

Carrie Liu CURRIER 이화여자대학교 아시아여성학센터 2007 Asian Journal of Women's Studies(AJWS) Vol.13 No.3

Feminist analyses of political economy examine both the ‘position of women,’ documenting the roles women hold in the public and private spheres, and the ‘power of gender,’ or the social factors that push or pull women into such positions. This article addresses both of these issues by assessing the labor that a sample of women in Beijing perform inside and outside of the household and the factors causing them to adjust their roles in each. Women’s perceptions on present and future employment opportunities have changed over time in response to the different stages of market reforms implemented in China, At times, the state has flexibilized and feminized women’s labor by promoting policies that support the male breadwinner model and treat women as supplemental rather than primary workers. These gendered policies have not only contributed to the low value that women assign to their roles in both the public and private spheres, but have also created some unexpected economic gains for a middle cohort of women. In this article, I examine both the social and economic factors shaping women’s labor decisions, using a cohort analysis of women's allocation of public and private sphere labor, perceptions of (in)equality, and attitudes toward the path and pace of reform to determine how women fare in the labor market under reform.

Recoding the chaste kisaeng in Yi Hae-jo's Kang myŏng-hwa chŏn

        Carrie Middleditch 이화여자대학교 아시아여성학센터 2019 Asian Journal of Women's Studies(AJWS) Vol.25 No.1

Korea’s abrupt transition into modernization was followed closely by Japanese colonialism at the turn of the twentieth century. With this social and political upheaval came the sudden hegemony of novel ideologies over an established traditional Confucian system. In public discourse and literary representations of early modern Korea, women figured as emblems of the country’s larger existential crisis. In addition, the kisaeng (generally known as female entertainers in pre-modern Korea) occupied a precarious ambiguity in the public sphere as innovators of new cultural trends and persistent obstacles to domestic morality. This study examines this ambiguity as a productive, creative deliberation regarding changing roles of women in Korea. I focus in particular on the hybridization of traditional imagery depicting female chastity (chŏngchŏl) in Yi Hae-jo’s fictionalized biography of the kisaeng, Kang Myŏng-hwa, which localized aesthetics of feminism and free love ideology for Korean reading publics. Through the biographical text of Kang Myŏng-hwa chŏn, the chaste kisaeng archetype relives the classical narrative of Ch’un-hyang and her virtuous wifely love for an aristocrat. In effect, Ch’un-hyang is remythologized in Kang Myŏng-hwa in the twentieth-century as a bridge between the past and modernity.

The Blind Men and the Soft Drinks Industry in the United Arab Emirates

Carrie Amani Annabi,Fatima Hassan,Islam Amer 한국유통과학회 2018 The Journal of Industrial Distribution & Business( Vol.9 No.10

Purpose – This paper explores the contribution lean makes to service levels by addressing lean thinking application in logistics process improvement within a MNC soft drinks manufacturer situated in the United Arab Emirates, and identifies the most significant sources of wastes and their interdependence and highlights key attributes of successful lean implementation. Research design, data, and methodology - This case study examines key logistics employees’ perceptions on lean methodology. Results - The results highlight the most significant types of wastes in logistical processes and illustrates ways to eliminate wastes and streamline process flow. The importance of the human role within lean methodology is also identified. Findings suggest that managers should follow both a micro and macro approach when implementing lean practices, as focusing on one waste often leads to ignoring the significance of other wastes. Conclusions - This study highlights the importance of implementing lean at both micro and macro levels and shows how staff involvement increases the efficacy of lean thinking. It offers guidance towards the efficiency of creating value stream mapping processes in situ, which considers different wastes and their interdependence. Managers with limited resources are encouraged to implement lean methodology taking cognizance of these factors.

Targeted Coaching to Improve Osteoporosis Therapy Adherence: A Single Arm Variation of the C-STOP Study

        Carrie Ye 대한골대사학회 2024 대한골대사학회지 Vol.31 No.1

Background: In this pre-planned variation of the Comparing Strategies Targeting Osteoporosis to Prevent Fractures After an Upper Extremity Fracture (C-STOP) trial, we investigated whether adherence-specific coaching by the case manager (CM) further improved the adherence and persistence rates compared to those seen in the C-STOP trial. Methods: We conducted a prospective observational cohort study of community-dwelling adults 50 years or older who suffered an upper-extremity fracture and were not previously treated with osteoporosis medications, to assess whether a well-trained CM can partner with patients to improve adherence to and persistence with oral bisphosphonate intake. The primary outcome was adherence (taking > 80% of prescribed doses) to oral bisphosphonate intake at 12 months after study enrollment. Secondary outcomes included primary adherence to and 12-month persistence with oral bisphosphonate and calcium and vitamin D supplement intake at 12 months. Results: The study cohort consisted of 84 participants, of which 30 were prescribed an oral bisphosphonate. Twenty-two (73.3%) started treatment within 3 months. The adherence rate at 12 months was 77.3%. The persistence rate at 12 months was 95.5%. Of those not prescribed an oral bisphosphonate, 62.8% were taking supplemental calcium and 93.0% were taking supplemental vitamin D at 12 months. Depression was a significant predictor of 12-month non-adherence (adjusted odds ratio, 9.8; 95% confidence interval, 1.2–81.5). Conclusions: Adherence-specific coaching by a CM did not further improve the level of medication adherence achieved in the original C-STOP study. Importantly, these results can inform adherence in future intervention studies.

“What does religion have to do with nature conservation?”: Conflicts, cooperation and competing conceptualizations of religion and nature conservation in the German Religions for Biological Diversity project

Carrie Dohe 경희대학교 후마니타스 교양교육연구소 2022 후마니타스 포럼 Vol.8 No.2

The Religions for Biological Diversity project of the German Federal Agency for Nature Conservation promotes nature conservation through religious communities and fosters greater social harmony through interreligious cooperation. This paper explores how nature, nature conservation and interfaith cooperation were understood by participants in the project’s Interreligious Week for Nature Conservation. Using participation observation, semi-structured interviews and action research, I found that the events of the Interreligious Week for Nature Conservation spanned the spectrum between a more scientificallygrounded nature conservation and a merely symbolic one. The religious participants often perceived the conservation of nature through traditional religious values (peace, love, unity), thereby humanizing nature and making its conservation more relevant to their religious practice. Finally, while tensions arose between religious actors based on pre-existing conflicts, the greatest tension stemmed from nature conservationists sceptical about the involvement of religious actors in nature conservation.
