The Religions for Biological Diversity project of the German Federal Agency for Nature Conservation promotes nature conservation through religious communities and fosters greater social harmony through interreligious cooperation. This paper explores how nature, nature conservation and interfaith cooperation were understood by participants in the project’s Interreligious Week for Nature Conservation. Using participation observation, semi-structured interviews and action research, I found that the events of the Interreligious Week for Nature Conservation spanned the spectrum between a more scientificallygrounded nature conservation and a merely symbolic one. The religious participants often perceived the conservation of nature through traditional religious values (peace, love, unity), thereby humanizing nature and making its conservation more relevant to their religious practice. Finally, while tensions arose between religious actors based on pre-existing conflicts, the greatest tension stemmed from nature conservationists sceptical about the involvement of religious actors in nature conservation.
