The Belt Road Initiatives, Identity Politics, and The Making of Southeast Asian Identity

        Cahyo Pamungkas,Saiful Hakam 부산외국어대학교 아세안연구원 2019 Suvannabhumi Vol.11 No.2

The Chinese Belt Road initiatives in the Southeast Asian countries marked a new chapter in the development of China political influence on this region. This article looks at the initiative from the cultural dimension and aims to place its narrative as the entry point to understand the use of identity politics in Asian countries that target the Chinese diaspora. This topic relates to the primordial sentiments of Southeast Asian nations amid massive Chinese investment in the region. The issue of Chinese investments under the Belt Road Initiative corridor has a relationship with the formation of anti-Chinese discourse and anti-communist in some Southeast Asian countries. We took the cases of Indonesian and Malaysian elections to observe the use of identity politics and anti-Chinese political discourse in Southeast Asia. In both cases, a common issue emerged, that of the strengthening both Islamic and indigenous sensibilities. The establishment of ASEAN during the Cold War may be seen then as an anti-thesis to emerging Chinese power. However, anti-Chinese and anti-communism sentiments were not enough to unite the forces of the nations of Southeast Asia. We have concluded that brotherhood, mutual prosperity, and anti-neo-colonialism are yet to be fostered completely to make a distinct ASEAN identity.

Preventing Religious Conflict in Papua Land: Adopting Cultural Traditions of Peacebuilding

( Cahyo Pamungkas ),( Devi Tri Indriasari ) 서울대학교 통일평화연구원 2021 Asian Journal of Peacebuilding Vol.9 No.2

This article aims to explain why recent tensions between religious groups in Papua, Indonesia, did not develop into ethnoreligious conflicts such as those which broke out in Ambon and Poso. Such tensions are likely to occur because of the migration of Muslim ethnicities from elsewhere in Indonesia that leads to political, racial, religious, and economic divisions. Migrant populations are generally Malay, Muslim, and prosperous, while native Papuans are Melanesian, Christian, and impoverished. The Christian indigenous Papuans feel threatened by the influx of Muslim migrants. Based on Lederach’s concept of peace agents, we argue that the adoption of cultural mechanisms driving peace agencies is central to preventing ethnoreligious conflict. The curricula of local schools should include such local wisdom in order to reach all ethnoreligious groups.

      • Improving Meat Tenderness by using Protease Extract from Paddy Oats (Gnetum gnemon) Fruit Peel

        ( Cahyo Indarto ),( Shyang-chwen Sheu ),( Pomin Li ) 한국농업기계학회 2018 한국농업기계학회 학술발표논문집 Vol.23 No.1

This study investigated the possibility of an agricultural waste, paddy oats (Gnetum gnemon L.) fruit peel, as a source of protease extract, particularly used as a meat tenderizer. The effect of paddy oats protease extract on meat tenderness was evaluated and compared to those of commercial papain, commercial bromelin, and control. Paddy oats protease extract showed the high meat tenderizing activity since it resulted in shear force value of meat sample 46% lower than that of control, and similar (p<0.05) with those of commercial papain and commercial bromelin. Panelists scored the meat sample treated with paddy oats protease extract much more tender (7.4) than that of control (5.8), using a 10 point hedonic scale and no different (p<0.05) from those of commercial papain and commercial bromelin with score 7.3 and 7.7, respectively. Paddy oats protease extract also consistently ranked high for all evaluated parameters, therefore paddy oats protease extract could have a high potential as a meat tenderizer for improving tenderness quality of meat.

      • Overview of the Sambodana Project: Development of Mobile Communication Security System using Hardening Android

Cahyo, Darujati,Moh Noor Al, Azam International Journal of Computer ScienceNetwork S 2022 International journal of computer science and netw Vol.22 No.12

The Sambodana project is a mobile communication security system development project using Hardening Android. The initial idea for this project is that information leakage occurs outside of a communications application with end-to-end cryptographic security. Android hardening prevents unwanted applications and bloatware from being installed, such as unavailable Google Play Store or install restrictions.

      • Approaches in Southeast Asian Studies: Developing Post-colonial Theories in Area Studies

Cahyo Pamungkas 부산외국어대학교 아세안연구원 2015 Suvannabhumi Vol.7 No.1

This paper proposes an approach in Southeast Asian studies using a post-colonial framework in the study of post-colonial Southeast Asia. This framework is based on the sociology of knowledge that analyzes the dialectical relationship between science, ideology, and discourse. Post-colonial studies is critical of the concept of universality in science and posits that a scientific statement of a society cannot stand alone, but is made by authors themselves who produce, use, and claim the so-called scientific statement. Several concepts in post-colonial theories can be used to develop area studies, i.e. colonial discourse, subaltern, mimicry, and hybridity. Therefore, this study also explores these concepts to develop a more comprehensive understanding of Southeast Asian culture. The development of post-colonial theories can be used to respond to the hegemony of social theories from Europe and the United States. The main contribution of area studies in the field of the social sciences and humanities is in revealing the hidden interests behind the universal social sciences.

The Relationship Between Firm Diversification and Firm Performance: Empirical Evidence from Indonesia

CAHYO, Heru,KUSUMA, Hadri,HARJITO, D. Agus,ARIFIN, Zaenal Korea Distribution Science Association 2021 The Journal of Asian Finance, Economics and Busine Vol.8 No.3

This extended study aims to analyze empirically the influence of firm diversification on firm performance moderated by the stages of the firm life cycle, which consists of introduction, growth, maturity, and decline. The target population of this study is the firms listed on the Indonesian Stock Exchange. The sampling method uses purposive sampling in the multi-business firm in Indonesia; it includes as many as 127 firms over the period from 2011 to 2017, totaling 889 firm-year observations. The firm performance is measured using a return of equity while the level of firm diversification with the minimum number of two operating segments is proxied by the Herfindahl index. The analysis method used in this study is the estimator model of the Generalized Method of Moment (GMM). The main findings show that the firm life cycle at the stage of growth and maturity significantly strengthens the influence of firm diversification on firm performance. On the other hand, the stage of decline fails to moderate the relationship between firm diversification and firm performance. This study discusses the implications and contributions of the findings theoretically, and provide some policy justifications for potential investors before they invest their money in the capital market.

      • Different Generation of Air Ultrafine Bubble on Hydroponic Solution for Lettuce Growth in Plant Factory

( Indrawan Cahyo Adilaksono ),( Hiroshi Shimizu ),( Hiroshi Nakashima ),( Juro Miyasaka ),( Katsuaki Ohdoi ) 한국농업기계학회 2018 한국농업기계학회 학술발표논문집 Vol.23 No.1

Generation of Ultrafine Bubble (UFB) on hydroponic culture solution has been reported to be able for stimulating the growth of plant. However, the promoting effect of UFB is still hard and inconsistent to be obtained due to the unknown optimum generation of UFB. Generation time of UFB influenced UFB concentration on hydroponic solution. Furthermore, the concentration of UFB have positive correlation with oxidative stress on plant that might affect the growth of plant. In this study, we aim to investigate growth response of lettuce to different UFB water treatment so that the optimum generation of UFB can be obtained. Fifteen seedlings were cultivated on a tray for 4 weeks. The cultivation was conducted at air temperature 20-23°C, relative humidity 60%-80%, under white LEDs that were adjusted at 200 ± 10 μmol·m-2·s-1 and irradiation cycle was set at 16h/8h (light/dark). Ten lettuces were harvested (1st Harvest) on 14th day and five lettuces were harvested (2nd Harvest) on 28th day. Air ultrafine bubble water was generated by UFB Generator (FZ1N-10 I, IDEC Corporation, Japan). UFB water was generated with 3 different generation time; 12 minutes (Gt1), 30 minutes (Gt2), and 120 minutes (Gt3). Generation time of UFB water was parallel with pass number. Pass number is the number of times the control water circulated entirely through the UFB generator. In this experiment, pass number were respectively 10 pass number (Gt1), 25 pass number (Gt2), and 100 pass number (Gt3). Each UFB water (Gt1, Gt2, and Gt3) were distributed respectively into 5 trays with different mixtures between UFB water and normal water as UFB water treatment (10% UFB water, 30% UFB water, 50% UFB water, 75% UFB water, and 100% UFB water). In addition, a tray with normal water was prepared as control treatment. Hydroponic solution was maintained at similar condition of DO, EC, pH, and temperature. The final result reconfirmed again the ability of air UFB water to accelerate the growth of lettuce on hydroponic solution. However, the excess or lack of UFB concentration did not significantly influence the growth of lettuce compared to control treatment. Since, the excess concentration of UFB might inhibit the growth of lettuce due to oxidative stress inside the plant. Moreover, lack concentration of UFB is not enough to stimulate the growth of lettuce. On the other hand, appropriate concentration of UFB significantly increased the fresh weight and dry weight of lettuce. The optimum growth of lettuce tended to shift into low concentration of UFB water when the generation time of UFB water is increased. In our experiment, the optimum growth of lettuce was obtained on 30% UFB water (Gt3) treatment and 75% UFB water (Gt2) treatment. Thus, this result illustrates how different generation of UFB will lead into different final result due to the important role of UFB concentration on the hydroponic solution.

Two-Stage Spectrum Sensing Scheme Using Fuzzy Logic for Cognitive Radio Networks

Satrio, Cahyo Tri,Jaeshin, Jang The Korea Institute of Information and Commucation 2016 Journal of information and communication convergen Vol.14 No.1

Spectrum sensing in cognitive radio networks allows secondary users to sense the unused spectrum without causing interference to primary users. Cognitive radio requires more accurate sensing results from unused portions of the spectrum. Accurate spectrum sensing techniques can reduce the probability of false alarms and misdetection. In this paper, a two-stage spectrum sensing scheme is proposed for cooperative spectrum sensing in cognitive radio networks. In the first stage, spectrum sensing is executed for each secondary user using energy detection based on double adaptive thresholds to determine the spectrum condition. If the energy value lies between two thresholds, a fuzzy logic scheme is applied to determine the channel conditions more accurately. In the second stage, a fusion center combines the results of each secondary user and uses a fuzzy logic scheme for combining all decisions. The simulation results show that the proposed scheme provides increased sensing accuracy by about 20% in some cases.
