<P>In this study, we developed Newcastle disease virus (NDV) virus-like particles (VLPs) expressing NDV fusion (F) protein along with influenza virus matrix 1 (M1) protein using the insect cell expression system. Specific-pathogen-free chickens were immunized with oil emulsion NDV VLP vaccines containing increasing dosages of VLPs (0.4, 2, 10, or 50 μg of VLPs/0.5-ml dose). Three weeks after immunization, the immunogenicity of the NDV VLP vaccines was determined using a commercial enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kit, and a lethal challenge using a highly virulent NDV strain was performed to evaluate the protective efficacy of the NDV VLP vaccines. NDV VLP vaccines elicited anti-NDV antibodies and provided protection against a lethal challenge in a dose-dependent manner. Although the VLP vaccines containing 0.4 and 2 μg of VLPs failed to achieve high levels of protection, a single immunization with NDV VLP vaccine containing 10 or 50 μg could fully protect chickens from a lethal challenge and greatly reduced challenge virus shedding. Furthermore, we could easily differentiate infected from vaccinated animals (DIVA) using the hemagglutination inhibition (HI) test. These results strongly suggest that utilization of NDV VLP vaccine in poultry species may be a promising strategy for the better control of NDV.</P>

We have experimentally studied the oscillatory interlayer exchange coupling (IEC) strength in synthetic antiferromagnets consisting of [Pt/Co]4/Ir/(Ru, Mo or W)/Ir/[Co/Pt]4 with perpendicular magnetization. The Ir/(Ru, Mo or W)/Ir composite spacer enables us to obtain a substantial IEC in perpendicular synthetic antiferromagnets. The IEC with Ir/Ru/Ir spacers is as large as that with a single Ru or Ir spacer. The Ir/Mo (or W)/Ir gives rise to much larger IEC than a single Mo (or W) spacer because of the Ir insertion. Based on the results with varying the Ru (or Mo) thickness, we find that the two extremal spanning vectors of Ru (or Mo) mainly determine the oscillation periods of IEC. The Ir insertion layer affects not only the magnitude of IEC but also the peak position. With increasing the Ir thickness, the position of IEC peak moves toward a thicker spacer range. This intriguing thickness dependence of composite spacers offers a possibility to tune both the Jex and spacer thickness for the SAF-based spintronic applications.

<P>Ginseng root is known to induce anti-diabetic activity, but the key components involved are unknown. We investigated which major ginsenosides in ginseng enhanced glucose homeostasis by <I>in vitro</I> studies. Rb1 and Rg1 reduced the triglyceride accumulation in 3T3-L1 adipocytes by activating PKA with increased intracellular cAMP. However, the insulin-stimulated glucose uptake was enhanced by Rb1 and Rg1 <I>via</I> activation of phosphatidylinositol-3 kinase. Rb1 and Rg1 promoted glucose-stimulated insulin secretion and cell viability in Min6 cells through PKA which augmented IRS2 expression to enhance insulin/IGF-1 signaling. These results suggest that Rb1 and Rg1 improved glucose homeostasis through the activation of a PKA like glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist.</P>

This paper proposes a new approach to the designed of visual feedback control system based on visual servoing method. The main focus of this paper is presented how it is effective to use many features for improving the accuracy of the visual feedback control of industrial articulated robot for assembling and inspection of parts. Some rank conditions, which relate the image Jacobian, and the control performance are derived. It is also proven that the accuracy is improved by increasing the number of features. The effectiveness of redundant features is verified by the real time experiments on a SCARA type robot(FARA) made in samsung electronics company.

Background: Eosinophilia is well recognized in specific conditions. The objective of the present study was to determine clinico-radiologic characteristics of eosinophilia and changes in prevalence over 10 years in recipients of private health screening program at a tertiary hospital in Korea. Methods: Data of private health screening program recipients at the health promotion center of Chung-Ang University Hospital from 2004 to 2013 were collected. Health-related questionnaires and laboratory findings of private health screening program with possible relation with eosinophilia were reviewed. Results of enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for parasite, chest computed tomography, and pulmonary function test were also reviewed. Results: The cumulative prevalence of eosinophilia was 4.0% (1,963 of 48,928). Prevalence of eosinophilia showed a decreased trend from 2004 to 2013. Most cases (96.6%) had mild degree of eosinophilia. Eosinophilic subjects were older and male-predominant. They showed lower levels of forced expiratory volume in 1 second ($FEV_1%$), forced vital capacity (FVC%), and $FEV_1/FVC$ than those without eosinophilia. Eosinophilic subjects showed higher positive rate for common parasite in ELISA than those without eosinophilia. On radiologic findings, consolidation and ground glass opacities were positively associated with the degree of eosinophilia. When eosinophil was classified based on severity, statistically significant correlation between the severity of eosinophil and radiologic abnormalities was found. Conclusion: Eosinophilia is uncommon in healthy population. It usually occurs at a mild degree. Eosinophilic patients have more radiologic abnormalities compared to those without eosinophilia. Such radiologic abnormalities are associated with the severity of eosinophilia.
