Pre-harvest ethylene control affects vase life of cut rose ‘Carola’ by regulating energy metabolism and antioxidant enzyme activity

        Bi Gong,Shuai Huang,Niu Ye,Xue Yuan,Huiling Ma 한국원예학회 2018 Horticulture, Environment, and Biotechnology Vol.59 No.6

We studied the role of ethylene control in regulating energy metabolism, antioxidant enzyme activity, and vase life of cutrose Rosa hybrida ‘Carola’. Rose fl owers at stage II were sprayed with one of the following solutions: water (control), 10μL L −1 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP), or 0.5 g L −1 2-chloroethanephosphonic acid (ethephon). After harvest, ethyleneproduction rate, respiration intensity, energy charge (EC), activities of energy metabolism-related and antioxidant enzymes, and malondialdehyde (MDA) content were measured. Results showed that 1-MCP enhanced the activities of superoxidedismutase, H + -adenosine triphosphatase, Ca 2+ -adenosine triphosphatase, succinic dehydrogenase, and cytochrome c oxidase, increased adenosine triphosphate (ATP) content, maintained high EC levels, inhibited respiration intensity, reduced peroxidase(POD) and polyphenol oxidase (PPO) activity and MDA accumulation, and prolonged vase life. Ethephon promotedethylene production and respiration intensity, increased POD and PPO activity, reduced ATP content and EC levels, andaccelerated senescence. Our results support a novel role for ethylene control in regulating senescence of ‘Carola’.

      • Aero-Optical Diagnostic Technique for the Hypersonic Boundary Layer Transition on a Flat Plate

Li, Ruiqu,Gong, Jian,Bi, Zhixian,Ma, Handong The Society for Aerospace System Engineering 2015 International Journal of Aerospace System Engineer Vol.2 No.2

A new cross disciplinary conception of transitional aero-optics is built up during analyzing and measuring the linkage between the hypersonic boundary layer transition on a flat plate and the jittering characteristics of the small-aperture beam through that boundary layer. Based on that conception, the Small-Aperture Beam Technique (SABT) and high-speed Imaging Camera System (ICS) used in aero-optical studies are considered as new techniques for the assessment of the hypersonic transition in the boundary layer on a flat plate. In the FD-20 gun tunnel, for the free stream parameters with Mach number of 8 and unit Reynolds number of $1{\times}10^7$ (1/m), those two optical techniques are used to measure the jitter of the small-aperture beam. At the same free stream parameters, the distribution of the heat transfer along the centerline of the flat plate is also measured by the thin film resistance gauge technique. The results show the similarity of the increase trend between the heat transfer and the jitter of the small-aperture beam in the transitional region. It helps us to surmise that it may be feasible to diagnose the transition in a hypersonic boundary layer on a flat plate by means of those above optical techniques.

Pre-harvest 1-Methylcyclopropene Application Affects Post-harvest Physiology and Storage Life of the Cut Rose cv. Carola

        Shuai Huang,Huiling Ma,Bi Gong,Fujuan Wei 한국원예학회 2017 Horticulture, Environment, and Biotechnology Vol.58 No.2

We evaluated and optimized the effects of an alternative pre-harvest application of the non-toxic ethyleneaction inhibitor 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP)on the physiology and storage life of the cut rose (Rosa hybrida) cv. Carola. Cut rose was treated with a single pre-harvest liquid formula spray of 10 μL·L-11-MCP or a single treatmentof a modified atmosphere packaging of 50-μm thick polyethylene film (PE50), or a combination of the two (1-MCP+PE50),and the effects on vase life, storage life, and cold storage senescence related physiological changes were evaluated. Cut rose subjected to the pre-harvest 1-MCP spray treatment had the longest storage life (26 days), while those subjectedto PE50, 1-MCP+PE50, and the untreated control treatment had mean storage lives of 22, 19, and 16 days, respectively. Additionally, the pre-harvest 1-MCP spray treatment significantly extended the vase life of cold-stored flowers forzero or six days, by 27.08% and 42.55%, respectively. The pre-harvest spray treatment significantly suppressed respirationintensity, ethylene production, soluble protein degradation, 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid (ACC) production, and ACC oxidase activity. The 1-MCP+PE50 treatment compromised all the effects of the 1-MCP treatment exceptthe effect on soluble protein content. We conclude that a pre-harvest 1-MCP spray treatment has positive effects onthe vase life and storage longevity of cut rose, and that combining this treatment with a PE50 package diminishesthese effects.

Anticancer, Antioxidant, and Antimicrobial Activities of Anemone (Anemone cathayensis)

        Jun-li Wang,Kun Liu,Wei-zhen Gong,Qian Wang,Dong-ting Xu,Ming-fei Liu,Kai-li Bi,Yun-fei Song 한국식품과학회 2012 Food Science and Biotechnology Vol.21 No.2

This study was performed to evaluate the anticancer, antioxidant, and antimicrobial activities of fractions and isolated compounds from anemone (Anemone cathayensis). Fourteen compounds were isolated from extracts. Anticancer activities of fractions and compounds were determined by MTT assay, and all tested fractions showed inhibition activity on human breast cancer cells (MDA-MB-231). The fraction 6 displayed the strongest anticancer activity, and inhibition percent was 50.32%. The antioxidant effect of fractions was evaluated by using DPPH scavenging assays. Fraction 5 had a higher DPPH radical scavenging activity with low IC50 value of 30.578μg/mL. The antimicrobial activity of the fractions was evaluated against 3 microorganisms using the agar well diffusion method. The fractions also showed moderate antimicrobial activity. These results suggest that anemone could hold a good potential source for human health.

박성순 ( Seong Soon Park ),강공언 ( Gong Unn Kang ),박비오 ( Bi O Park ) 한국환경분석학회 2012 환경분석과 독성보건 Vol.15 No.1

The ultimate goal of this research is to analyze the business types and greenhouse gas emissions of the companies in the Iksan Industrial Complex (1st, 2nd Industrial Complex), and based on this, draw up a mediumlong term road map for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. This road map will be used as the preliminary data for construction of the foundation for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and the establishment of the policies against the climate changes. We reviewed the measures to reduce greenhouse gas emission by main business type in the Iksan Industrial Complex, and suggested a medium-long term road map for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. As a result of the reduction effect of greenhouse gas emission by the reduction plan for the main companies in the Iksan Industrial Complex (1st, 2nd Industrial Complex), it was investigated that the greenhouse gas reduction through the improvement of operating methods, and equipment, the heat recovery from exhausted gas, heat treatment were effective in the economic, environmental and technical aspects. Also, it was estimated that the application of greenhouse gas reduction plan would reduce a total of 49,886 tCO eq in 2015.

      • Identification and Functional Analysis of Differentially Expressed Genes Related to Metastatic Osteosarcoma

        Niu, Feng,Zhao, Song,Xu, Chang-Yan,Chen, Lin,Ye, Long,Bi, Gui-Bin,Tian, Gang,Gong, Ping,Nie, Tian-Hong Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2014 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.15 No.24

Background: To explore the molecular mechanisms of metastatic osteosarcoma (OS) by using the microarray expression profiles of metastatic and non-metastatic OS samples. Materials and Methods: The gene expression profile GSE37552 was downloaded from Gene Expression Omnibus database, including 2 human metastatic OS cell line models and 2 two non-metastatic OS cell line models. The differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified by Multtest package in R language. In addition, functional enrichment analysis of the DEGs was performed by WebGestalt, and the protein-protein interaction (PPI) networks were constructed by Hitpredict, then the signal pathways of the genes involved in the networks were performed by Kyoto Encyclopaedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) automatic annotation server (KAAS). Results: A total of 237 genes were classified as DEGs in metastatic OS. The most significant up- and down-regulated genes were A2M (alpha-2-macroglobulin) and BCAN (brevican). The DEGs were significantly related to the response to hormone stimulus, and the PPI network of A2M contained IL1B (interleukin), LRP1 (low-density lipoprotein receptor-related protein 1) and PDGF (platelet-derived growth factor). Furthermore, the MAPK signaling pathway and focal adhesion were significantly enriched. Conclusions: A2M and its interactive proteins, such as IL1B, LRP1 and PDGF may be candidate target molecules to monitor, diagnose and treat metastatic OS. The response to hormone stimulus, MAPK signaling pathway and focal adhesion may play important roles in metastatic OS.
