Anti-Diabetic Effects of an Ethanol Extract of Cassia Abbreviata Stem Bark on Diabetic Rats and Possible Mechanism of Its Action - Anti-diabetic Properties of Cassia abbreviata -

Bati, Keagile,Kwape, Tebogo Elvis,Chaturvedi, Padmaja KOREAN PHARMACOPUNCTURE INSTITUTE 2017 Journal of pharmacopuncture Vol.20 No.1

Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the hypoglycemic effects of an ethanol extract of Cassia abbreviata (ECA) bark and the possible mechanisms of its action in diabetic albino rats. Methods: ECA was prepared by soaking the powdered plant material in 70% ethanol. It was filtered and made solvent-free by evaporation on a rotary evaporator. Type 2 diabetes was induced in albino rats by injecting 35 mg/kg body weight (bw) of streptozotocin after having fed the rats a high-fat diet for 2 weeks. Diabetic rats were divided into ECA-150, ECA-300 and Metformin (MET)-180 groups, where the numbers are the doses in mg.kg.bw administered to the groups. Normal (NC) and diabetic (DC) controls were given distilled water. The animals had their fasting blood glucose levels and body weights determined every 7 days for 21 days. Oral glucose tolerance tests (OGTTs) were carried out in all animals at the beginning and the end of the experiment. Liver and kidney samples were harvested for glucose 6 phosphatase (G6Pase) and hexokinase activity analyses. Small intestines and diaphragms from normal rats were used for ${\alpha}-glucosidase$ and glucose uptake studies against the extract. Results: Two doses, 150 and 300 mg/kg bw, significantly reduced the fasting blood glucose levels in diabetic rats and helped them maintain normal body weights. The glucose level in DC rats significantly increased while their body weights decreased. The 150 mg/kg bw dose significantly increased hexokinase and decreased G6Pase activities in the liver and the kidneys. ECA inhibited ${\alpha}-glucosidase$ activity and promoted glucose uptake in the rats' hemi-diaphragms. Conclusion: This study revealed that ECA normalized blood glucose levels and body weights in type 2 diabetic rats. The normalization of the glucose levels may possibly be due to inhibition of ${\alpha}-glucosidase$, decreased G6Pase activity, increased hexokinase activity and improved glucose uptake by muscle tissues.

GLOBAL FINANCIAL CRISIS AND FOREIGN DEVELOPMENT ASSISTANCE SHOCKS IN LEAST DEVELOPING COUNTRIES

DEBASISH KUMAR DAS,CHAMPA BATI DUTTA 중앙대학교 경제연구소 2013 Journal of Economic Development Vol.38 No.2

This paper evaluates whether the exogenous component of the global financial crisis affects OECD-DAC EU donor countries ODA disbursements to the LDCs and how it impacts on LDCs economic prosperity. Using both static and dynamic panel techniques, we find that global financial crisis in OECD-EU donor countries are causes for the significant downside of ODA flows to the LDCs. Consequently it adversely affects through the various transmission channels (e.g., ODA disbursements, remittances, bilateral financial flows, export growth) to the LDCs economic growth. Our results also explore that due to countercyclical role of ODA flows from the donors’ largely affect to the LDCs economic development process negatively. The robustness checks using alternative estimation technique supports our original estimation results in every context.

      • Health Promoting Lifestyle Behaviour in Medical Students: a Multicentre Study from Turkey

        Nacar, Melis,Baykan, Zeynep,Cetinkaya, Fevziye,Arslantas, Didem,Ozer, Ali,Coskun, Ozlem,Bati, Hilal,Karaoglu, Nazan,Elmali, Ferhan,Yilmaze, Gulay Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2014 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.15 No.20

Background: The aim of this study was to determine the predictors of health promoting lifestyle behaviour among medical students attending seven of the medical schools in Turkey. Materials and Methods: This crosssectional descriptive study was performed during the second semester of the first and last (sixth) years of study from March to May 2011. A questionnaire with two sections was specifically designed. The first section contained questions on demographic characteristics; the second consisted of the Health Promoting Lifestyle Profile II (HPLP) Scale. From a total of 2,309 medical students, 2,118 (response rate 91.7%) completed the questionnaire. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t, Anova, Tukey test and binary logistic regression analysis. The research was approved by the Ethics Committee of Erciyes University. Results: The mean age was $20.7{\pm}2.9$ years and it was found that 55.1% were men, 62.3% were in the first year. The overall prevalence of smoking was 19.1%, and for drinking alcohol was 19.4%. HPLP point averages of the first year students were $129.2{\pm}17.7$, and for last year $125.5{\pm}19.0$. The overall mean score for the HPLP II was $2.5{\pm}0.4$. They scored highest on the spiritual growth subscale ($2.9{\pm}0.5$), interpersonal relations ($2.8{\pm}0.5$), health responsibility subscale ($2.3{\pm}0.5$), nutrition subscale ($2.3{\pm}0.5$), stress management subscale ($2.3{\pm}0.4$), and the lowest subscale physical activity ($2.0{\pm}0.5$). It is established that student's grade, educational level of parents, economic status of family, marital status, smoking and general health perception of the students resulted in a significant difference in HPLP Scale total score average and the mean score of majority of subscales. There was no statistically significant difference between the total HPLP when evaluated for gender, chronic disease, alcohol drinking status and BMI. Conclusions: Based on these results, particularly in the curriculum of medical students in order to increase positive health behaviours including physical activity, health promotion issues, and giving more space to aim at behaviour change in these matters is recommended.

Effect of β-Chain Alignment Degree on the Performance of Piezoelectric Nanogenerator Based on Poly(Vinylidene Fluoride) Nanofiber

        Khatatbeh Ibtehaj,Mohammad Hafizuddin Hj Jumali,Sameer Al-Bati,Poh Choon Ooi,Bandar Ali Al-Asbahi,Abdullah Ahmed Ali Ahmed 한국고분자학회 2022 Macromolecular Research Vol.30 No.3

This work demonstrated the effect of the β-chain alignment degree on piezoelectric nanogenerator (PNG) performance. A simple, safe and low-cost fastcentrifugal spinning technique was used to produce self-poled poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) nanofiber. PNG based on acetone-prepared PVDF fibers, with high β-chain alignment, generated output open-circuit voltage (VOC) and short-circuit current (ISC) five times higher than the film counterpart. In addition, the fibers showed a remarkable increase in β-chain alignment degree as the ratio of N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) solvent increased. The optimum nanofiber with the highest β-chain alignment degree, β-fraction and piezoelectric charge coefficient of 0.93, 91.8% and -120 pC.N-1 was obtained, respectively. PNG based on the optimum fiber displayed the highest VOC, ISC and power density of 14 V, 1.4 μA and 6.7 μWcm-2, respectively. This performance is greater than any PNG made from electrospun PVDF fiber. The excellent performance of the fabricated PNGs was strongly related to the high alignment degree of β-chains parallel along the fiber axis. In addition, due to low Young’s modulus (1.63 MPa) of the optimum fibers, the related lead-free PNG is sensitive to small movements and can be used in wearable and implanted medical devices.
