      • Health Promoting Lifestyle Behaviour in Medical Students: a Multicentre Study from Turkey

        Nacar, Melis,Baykan, Zeynep,Cetinkaya, Fevziye,Arslantas, Didem,Ozer, Ali,Coskun, Ozlem,Bati, Hilal,Karaoglu, Nazan,Elmali, Ferhan,Yilmaze, Gulay Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2014 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.15 No.20

Background: The aim of this study was to determine the predictors of health promoting lifestyle behaviour among medical students attending seven of the medical schools in Turkey. Materials and Methods: This crosssectional descriptive study was performed during the second semester of the first and last (sixth) years of study from March to May 2011. A questionnaire with two sections was specifically designed. The first section contained questions on demographic characteristics; the second consisted of the Health Promoting Lifestyle Profile II (HPLP) Scale. From a total of 2,309 medical students, 2,118 (response rate 91.7%) completed the questionnaire. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t, Anova, Tukey test and binary logistic regression analysis. The research was approved by the Ethics Committee of Erciyes University. Results: The mean age was $20.7{\pm}2.9$ years and it was found that 55.1% were men, 62.3% were in the first year. The overall prevalence of smoking was 19.1%, and for drinking alcohol was 19.4%. HPLP point averages of the first year students were $129.2{\pm}17.7$, and for last year $125.5{\pm}19.0$. The overall mean score for the HPLP II was $2.5{\pm}0.4$. They scored highest on the spiritual growth subscale ($2.9{\pm}0.5$), interpersonal relations ($2.8{\pm}0.5$), health responsibility subscale ($2.3{\pm}0.5$), nutrition subscale ($2.3{\pm}0.5$), stress management subscale ($2.3{\pm}0.4$), and the lowest subscale physical activity ($2.0{\pm}0.5$). It is established that student's grade, educational level of parents, economic status of family, marital status, smoking and general health perception of the students resulted in a significant difference in HPLP Scale total score average and the mean score of majority of subscales. There was no statistically significant difference between the total HPLP when evaluated for gender, chronic disease, alcohol drinking status and BMI. Conclusions: Based on these results, particularly in the curriculum of medical students in order to increase positive health behaviours including physical activity, health promotion issues, and giving more space to aim at behaviour change in these matters is recommended.

      • Quechua Language Revitalization Policies and Planning in Peru, Bolivia, and Ecuador

Tuba Yilmaz(Tuba Yilmaz ) 전남대학교 교육문제연구소 2023 New Horizons of Educational Research Vol.3 No.1

The Quechua language, spoken by indigenous Quechuans, faced endangerment due to the widespread use of Spanish. This paper explored the language revitalization policies for Quechua language in South American countries, particularly Peru, Bolivia, and Ecuador. The paper began by presenting a concise overview of Quechua and the Quechuan community, elucidating the factors contributing to Quechua's endangered status and the prevalence of Spanish monolingualism. Subsequently, it delved into an exploration of language revitalization policies and challenges within each country, framed by corpus planning, status planning, acquisition planning, and prestige planning. The paper concluded with a discussion on the outcomes of Quechua revitalization efforts. This paper offered valuable insights for countries adopting a 'language as a resource approach,' and particularly those endeavoring to implement additive policies for their extinct, endangered, or threatened languages.

Towards a better understanding of detection properties of different types of plastic scintillator crystals using physical detector and MCNPX code

        Yilmaz Ayberk,Alan Hatice Yilmaz,Susam Lidya Amon,Akkus Baki,ALMisned Ghada,Ilhan Taha Batuhan,Tekin H.O. 한국원자력학회 2022 Nuclear Engineering and Technology Vol.54 No.12

The purpose of this comprehensive research is to observe the impact of scintillator crystal type on entire detection process. For this aim, MCNPX (version 2.6.0) is used for designing of a physical plastic scintillation detector available in our laboratory. The modelled detector structure is validated using previous studies in the literature. Next, different types of plastic scintillation crystals were assessed in the same geometry. Several fundamental detector properties are determined for six different plastic scintillation crystals. Additionally, the deposited energy quantities were computed using the MCNPX code. Although six scintillation crystals have comparable compositions, the findings clearly indicate that the crystal composed of PVT 80% þ PPO 20% has superior counting and detecting characteristics when compared to the other crystals investigated. Moreover, it is observed that the highest deposited energy amount, which is a result of the highest collision number in the crystal volume, corresponds to a PVT 80% þ PPO 20% crystal. Despite the fact that plastic detector crystals have similar chemical structures, this study found that performing advanced Monte Carlo simulations on the detection discrepancies within the structures can aid in the development of the most effective spectroscopy procedures by ensuring maximum efficiency prior to and during use.

      • Lifestyle Behaviors and Early Diagnosis Practices of Cancer Patients

Yilmaz, Medine,Sanli, Deniz,Ucgun, Mujde,Kaya, Nur Sahin,Tokem, Yasemin Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2013 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.14 No.5

Background: The aim was to determine the lifestyle behaviors and the practices for early diagnosis of cancer of cancer patients. Materials and Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional design was used for this study. The sample consisted of 222 patients with a diagnosis of cancer (non-random sample method). Ethical permission was obtained of the Non-interventional Research Ethics Committee of our Institution. Values of p<0.05 were accepted as statistically significant. Results: It was observed that 54.4% of the patients had never performed breast self-examination, 60.8% had never had a mammography, and 71.2% had never had a Pap smear. Sixty-six point two percent of patients had never had screening for colon cancer within the past ten years. GIS cancers were higher in smokers and ex-smokers (p=0.005), in drinkers and in ex-drinkers (p=0.000). The breast cancer rate was higher in obese people (p=0.019). Conclusions: The results of this study provide information on the healthy lifestyle behavior of cancer patients before their diagnosis, and their use of early diagnosis practices. The important aspect of this study is to extend cancer patients' period of life after the diagnosis and treatment process, to make them conscious of risky lifestyle and nutritional behavior so that they can maintain a high quality of life, and to start initiatives in this direction that would ensure changes in behavior.

A critical review on blood flow in large arteries; relevance to blood rheology, viscosity models, and physiologic conditions

Yilmaz, Fuat,Gundogdu, Mehmet Yasar The Korean Society of Rheology 2008 Korea-Australia rheology journal Vol.20 No.4

The purpose of this study is mainly directed towards present of viewpoints on critical and commentary analysis on blood rheology, blood viscosity models, and physiological flow conditions. Understanding these basics is fundamental to meet the need for a sufficient and reliable CFD model of blood. Most of the used viscosity models on this manner have determined from parameter fitting on experimental viscosity data. Availability of experimental data from literature to define viscosity models of CFD analysis should be accurately chosen and treated in order to avoid any errors. Several basic gaps that limit the CFD model results are identified and given opportunities for future research.

ON SOME GENERALIZATIONS OF CLOSED SUBMODULES

        Yilmaz Durgun 대한수학회 2015 대한수학회보 Vol.52 No.5

Characterizations of closed subgroups in abelian groups have been generalized to modules in essentially different ways; they are in general inequivalent. Here we consider the relations between these generalizations over commutative rings, and we characterize the commutative rings over which they coincide. These are exactly the commutative noetherian distributive rings. We also give a characterization of c-injective modules over commutative noetherian distributive rings. For a noetherian distributive ring R, we prove that, (1) direct product of simple R-modules is c-injective; (2) an R-module D is c-injective if and only if it is isomorphic to a direct summand of a direct product of simple R-modules and injective R-modules.

        ON S-CLOSED SUBMODULES

        Yilmaz Durugun,Salahattin Ozdemir 대한수학회 2017 대한수학회지 Vol.54 No.4

A submodule $N$ of a module $M$ is called $\mathcal{S}$-closed (in $M$) if $M/N$ is nonsingular. It is well-known that the class $\closed$ of short exact sequences determined by closed submodules is a proper class in the sense of Buchsbaum. However, the class $\mathcal{S}-\closed$ of short exact sequences determined by $\mathcal{S}$-closed submodules need not be a proper class. In the first part of the paper, we describe the smallest proper class $\langle\mathcal{S}-\closed\rangle$ containing $\mathcal{S}-\closed$ in terms of $\mathcal{S}$-closed submodules. We show that this class coincides with the proper classes projectively generated by Goldie torsion modules and coprojectively generated by nonsingular modules. Moreover, for a right nonsingular ring $R$, it coincides with the proper class generated by neat submodules if and only if $R$ is a right SI-ring. In abelian groups, the elements of this class are exactly torsion-splitting. In the second part, coprojective modules of this class which we call \emph{ec-flat} modules are also investigated. We prove that injective modules are ec-flat if and only if each injective hull of a Goldie torsion module is projective if and only if every Goldie torsion module embeds in a projective module. For a left Noetherian right nonsingular ring $R$ of which the identity element is a sum of orthogonal primitive idempotents, we prove that the class $\langle\mathcal{S}-\closed\rangle $ coincides with the class of pure-exact sequences of modules if and only if $R$ is a two-sided hereditary, two-sided $CS$-ring and every singular right module is a direct sum of finitely presented modules.

      • Methylene Tetrahydrofolate Reductase C677T Mutation and Left Ventricular Hypertrophy in Turkish Patients with Type II Diabetes Mellitus

Yilmaz, Hulya,Agachan, Bedia,Ergen, Arzu,Karaalib, Zeynep Ermis,Isbir, Turgay Korean Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biol 2004 Journal of biochemistry and molecular biology Vol.37 No.2

This study was designed to investigate, in the Turkish population, the association of methylene tetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) C677T polymorphism and left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) in patients with type II diabetes mellitus. Our study included 249 patients with type II diabetes mellitus (102 men, 147 women) and 214 healthy volunteers as controls (91 men, 123 women). MTHFR C677T genotypes were determined by polymerase chain reaction, restriction fragment length polymorphism techniques. No differences were observed in the distribution of MTHFR genotypes or allele frequencies in the cases versus the controls. The frequency of the MTHFR-mutated allele (T) was 31.7% in the type II diabetes mellitus versus 31.1% of the controls. The homozygous mutation (T/T) in the MTHFR gene was identified in 12% of the type II diabetes mellitus versus 9.3% of the controls. Patients with the TT genotype showed a higher prevalence of LVH when compared to patients with the CC and CT genotypes (p = 0.01). The MTHFR gene C677T mutation may be a possible risk factor for the development of LVH in the type II diabetic patients.

Epidural Hematoma after Minor Trauma on Patient with Biparietal Osteodystrophy

Yilmaz, Muhammet Bahadir,Egemen, Emrah,Ozbakir, Bora,Tekiner, Ayhan The Korean Neurosurgical Society 2013 Journal of Korean neurosurgical society Vol.53 No.1

Thinning of parietal bone bilaterally is extremely rare but well known phenomenon. Approximate prevalence is 0.4-0.5% according to radiological scans, case reports and anthropologic researches. Even though biparietal osteodystrophy occurs mostly in over 60-year-old women, it shows no special association with race or geographical area tendency. Current definition was changed by understanding that is a pathological situation, not an anatomical variety or result of growing old in time. Biparietal osteodystrophy may have an unusual presentation and treatment still remains unclear. We aim to present a patient with biparietal osteodystrophy associated with minor head trauma that caused parietal fracture and epidural hematoma underneath.
