Quantum Chemical Studies of Some Sulphanilamide Schiff Bases Inhibitor Activity Using QSAR Methods
Baher, Elham,Darzi, Naser,Morsali, Ali,Beyramabadi, Safar Ali Korean Chemical Society 2015 대한화학회지 Vol.59 No.6
The different calculated quantum chemical descriptors by DFT method were used for prediction of some sulphanilamide Schiff bases inhibitor activity as a binding constant (log K). Multiple linear regression (MLR) and artificial neural network (ANN) were employed for developing the useful quantitative structure activity relationship (QSAR) model. The obtained results presented superiority of ANN model over the MLR one. The offering QSAR model is very easy to computation and Physico-Chemically interpretable. Sensitivity analysis was used to determine the relative importance of each descriptor in ANN model. The order of importance of each descriptor according to this analysis is: molecular volume, molecular weight and dipole moment, respectively. These descriptors appear good information related to different structure of sulphanilamide Schiff bases can participate in their inhibitor activity.

PurposePolycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a gynecological endocrine disorder that is characterized by disturbances in ovarianblood flow and angiogenesis. The aim of this study was to determine the association of vascular endothelial growthfactor (VEGF) and thrombospondin-1 (TSP-1) serum levels with the body mass index (BMI) in patients with PCOScompared with healthy subjects. MethodsThe study was conducted with 80 subjects in 3 PCOS groups, including normal weight, overweight, and obese PCOSgroups, and a control group of healthy subjects (n=20). The participants in all groups completed a questionnairecomprising sociodemographic and obstetric questions. The PCOS diagnosis in the study subjects was confirmed basedon the Rotterdam criteria, BMI was determined according to the World Health Organization guidelines, and the lipidaccumulation product index was calculated for all groups. Venous blood samples were collected from all participantsafter fasting to measure the serum levels of fasting blood glucose (FBG), lipids, insulin, VEGF, TSP-1, and leptin. ResultsOur findings showed that the serum VEGF level was significantly higher in the normal BMI PCOS group than thatin the control group (P=0.03), and the TSP-1 level was significantly lower in the obese PCOS group than that in thecontrol group (P=0.04). ConclusionsOur study demonstrated that alterations in VEGF and TSP-1 concentrations are dependent on BMI. Because abnormalovarian angiogenesis is considered to be the main feature of PCOS, the study of ovarian angiogenic imbalance isproposed as a new tool for PCOS diagnosis and management.

Objectives: Fishermen are among the most vulnerable groups for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)/AIDS with reported high prevalence. Poor knowledge base has been evidenced by a few studies. The present study was conducted to assess the knowledge regarding HIV/AIDS among fishermen of the Kutch coast, Gujarat, India. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among 950 fishermen of the Kutch coast, in the months of January-February 2015. Knowledge of HIV/AIDS of fishermen was assessed using structured interview schedules with 12 questions. The information on socio-demographic characteristics was also obtained. Chi-square test and multivariate logistic regression analysis were used for statistical analysis. The confidence level and level of significance were fixed at 95% and 5%, respectively. Results: A major proportion of participants (57.2%) had no access to any potential source of information and had never heard about HIV/AIDS (65.1%). Some of them were aware of modes of transmission of AIDS but only a few of them knew about the methods of prevention. Only 23.1% of participants were observed with appropriate knowledge regarding HIV/AIDS. Bivariate and multivariate analysis revealed significant variation in the proportion of participants with appropriate knowledge with age and educational status.
