Therapeutic effect of the mesenchymal stem cells on vigabatrin-induced retinopathy in adult male albino rat

        Ayat Mahmoud Domouky,Walaa M. Samy,Walaa A. Rashad 대한해부학회 2022 Anatomy & Cell Biology Vol.55 No.2

Vigabatrin (VGB) is an effective antiepileptic drug used mainly to treat infantile spasms and refractory complex partial seizures. However, using VGB was restricted as it was known to cause retinal toxicity that appears as a severe peripheral visual field defect. Accordingly, this study was conducted to examine the histopathological and biochemical effects of VGB on the retina in adult male albino rats and assess the possible therapeutic role of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) against this potential toxicity. The rats were divided into three groups (control group, VGB group, and VGB/MSCs group), one week after 65 days of VGB treatment ±MSCs. The right eyeballs were prepared for histological and immunohistochemical examination, whereas the left eyeballs were prepared for real-time polymerase chain reaction analysis. Our results demonstrated that MSCs ameliorated retinal pathological changes and downregulated the expression of glial fibrillary acidic protein, vascular endothelial growth factor, and synaptophysin after VGB administration suggesting MSCs function and vascular modulating effect. Moreover, MSCs regulate retinal tissue gene expression of BAX, Bcl-2, BDNF, NGF, synapsin, interleukin (IL)-6, IL-1β, and occludin suggesting MSCs antiapoptotic and immunomodulating effect. In conclusion, MSCs administration could be a suitable therapeutic line to ameliorate VGB-induced retinopathy.

COMMON FIXED POINT RESULTS FOR MAPPINGS UNDER NONLINEAR CONTRACTION OF CYCLIC FORM IN b-METRIC SPACES

Ayat Rabaiah,Abdallah Tallafha,Wasfi Shatanawi 경남대학교 기초과학연구소 2021 Nonlinear Functional Analysis and Applications Vol.26 No.2

In this research, we interpret the notion of a $b$-cyclic($\Phi ,C,D)-$contraction for the pair $(g,S)$ of self-mappings on the set $Y.$ We employ our definition to introduce some common fixed point theorems for the two mappings $g$ and $S$ under a set of conditions. Also we introduce an example to support our results.

      • Compressive strength prediction of limestone filler concrete using artificial neural networks

        Ayat, Hocine,Kellouche, Yasmina,Ghrici, Mohamed,Boukhatem, Bakhta Techno-Press 2018 Advances in computational design Vol.3 No.3

The use of optimum content of supplementary cementing materials (SCMs) such as limestone filler (LF) to blend with Portland cement has been resulted in many environmental and technical advantages, such as increase in physical properties, enhancement of sustainability in concrete industry and reducing $CO_2$ emission are well known. Artificial neural networks (ANNs) have been already applied in civil engineering to solve a wide variety of problems such as the prediction of concrete compressive strength. The feed forward back propagation (FFBP) algorithm and Tan-sigmoid transfer function were used for the ANNs training in this study. The training, testing and validation of data during the backpropagation training process yielded good correlations exceeding 97%. A parametric study was conducted to study the sensitivity of the developed model to certain essential parameters affecting the compressive strength of concrete. The effects and benefits of limestone filler on hardened properties of the concrete such as compressive strength were well established endorsing previous results in the literature. The results of this study revealed that the proposed ANNs model showed a high performance as a feasible and highly efficient tool for simulating the LF concrete compressive strength prediction.

Preservation of wastewater sedimentation tanks by using proposed types of coatings

Ayat Hussein Mahdi,Abdulazeez Ahmed,Sameh Badry Tobeia 대한토목학회 2023 KSCE Journal of Civil Engineering Vol.27 No.6

In Baghdad, Al- Rustamiya wastewater treatment plant was exposed to high and continuous drainage of sewage water, leading to weak in concrete parts of wastewater treatment plant. Protection of sedimentation tanks may be achieved by applying suitable coatings which resist the biological reaction and chemical effects of wastewater. Three types of coatings were prepared by using Siloxane polymer (SX5000WB) mixed with different amounts of micro titanium dioxide (TiO2). Concrete cubes were covered with these coatings and partially immersed for 28 days in basins contain wastewater brought from Al- Rustamiya primary and secondary sedimentation tanks. Swabs from the cubes were also taken to monitor bacterial growth on cube’s surfaces after applying different types of coatings. To determine the effects of coatings on concrete cubes strength, compressive strength was measured after 28 days of partially immersing in wastewater. According to the study's findings, coated concrete with 250 mg of micro TiO2 per litre of the polymer is a suitable method of protection. At this concentration of TiO2, bacterial growth was almost zero at concrete immersed in wastewater taken from primary and secondary sedimentation tanks, no obvious relationship was found between the type of coating and reduction of chloride and sulphate effect. Concrete compressive strength was increased by the increasing of coatings concentrations providing a thin film that may contribute in concrete protection.

Using Circuit Analogies for Analysis of Cochlear Models

        Mohammad Ayat,Paul D. Teal 대한의용생체공학회 2013 Biomedical Engineering Letters (BMEL) Vol.3 No.4

Purpose Despite all the simplifications that are applied tomake a cochlear model mathematically tractable, the timedomain or frequency domain analysis of a cochlear modelcan still be a challenging problem. This paper presents asimple and effective approach to implementation of suchmodels. Methods A framework is developed by which a onedimensionalnonlinear cochlear model can be represented byequivalent circuits. The circuit then can be analysed in SPICE(Simulation Program with Integrated Circuit Emphasis). Results The simulation results of the equivalent circuits aresimilar those achievable by other numerical methods. Conclusions The equivalent circuit representation of themodel is easy to develop and implement in a circuit simulatorsuch as SPICE. Moreover, the numerical methods which areused in SPICE are both fast and efficient for implementationof a cochlear model.

Structure and thermoelectric behavior of polyaniline-based/ CNT-composite

        Abd-Elsalam Ayat,Badr Hussein O.,Abdel-Rehim Ahmed A.,El-Mahallawi Iman S. 한국물리학회 2022 Current Applied Physics Vol.36 No.-

Thermoelectric materials have the capability of harvesting and converting the heat wasted into useful electrical current. Polymer thermoelectric composites have recently received attention and experienced a rapid development because of their low density, versatility, ease of synthesis and processing and low thermal conductivity. Herein, we report on synthesis and characterization of pristine polyaniline and polyaniline/carbon nanotubes network nanocomposite. In the preparation, aniline was polymerized via a facile chemical oxidative polymerization process, in which 30 wt% multiwall carbon nanotubes were in situ incorporated. Both pristine polyaniline and its composite were examined by XRD. For their thermoelectric performance, Seebeck coefficient and electrical conductivity were characterized using a home-built setup operated by keithley Multimeter (Model:2000). The fabricated composite exhibited superior increase in Seebeck coefficient and power factor to reach 141 μV/K and 0.004 μW/mK2, respectively at 95 ◦C. The corresponding I–V curves were further measured. The current was found to increase substantially to reach 2.2 mA at 1 V; almost one order of magnitude higher when compared to that of the pristine polyaniline sample.

Last mile delivery drone selection and evaluation using the interval-valued inferential fuzzy TOPSIS

        Farjana Nur,Ayat Alrahahleh,Reuben Burch,Kari Babski-Reeves,Mohammad Marufuzzaman 한국CDE학회 2020 Journal of computational design and engineering Vol.7 No.4

The last mile delivery option has become a focal point of academic research and industrial development in recent years. Multiple factors such as increased demands on delivery flexibility, customer requirements, delivery urgency, and many others are enforcing to adopt this option. For fulfilling this paradigm shift in delivery and providing additional flexibility, drones can be considered as a viable option to use for last mile delivery cases. Numerous drones are available in the market with varying capacities and functionalities, posing a significant challenge for decision-makers to select the most appropriate drone type for a specific application. In this purpose, this study proposes a comprehensive list of criterions that can be used to compare a set of available last mile delivery drones. Additionally, we introduced a systematic multi-criterion, multi-personnel decision making approach, referred to as interval-valued inferential fuzzy TOPSIS method. This method is robust and can handle the fuzziness in decision making, thereby providing quality drone selection decisions under different applications. We then apply this method to a real-life test setting. Results suggest that smaller drones or quadcopters are considered viable to use in urban environments while long-range drones are preferred for the last mile delivery needs in rural settings.

      • Intention to Quit Smoking among Intermediate and Secondary School Students in Saudi Arabia

Abdulmohsen Hamdan, Al-Zalabani,Ayat Roushdy, Abdallah,Reem Ibrahim, Alqabshawi Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2015 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.16 No.15

Background: Smoking is one of the most preventable causes of disease and death, including cancer, and quitting at an early age can reduce smoking-related morbidity and mortality. This study aimed to estimate the prevalence and to identify factors affecting the "intention to quit" among intermediate and secondary school current cigarette smoker students in Al Madinah city, Saudi Arabia. Materials and Methods: This study cohort included 307 current smoker students in a school-based survey. The intention to quit and its related determinants were assessed using a self-administered questionnaire. Results: More than half of the participants were ${\geq}17$ years, and of male gender (54.7%, 77.9% respectively). An intention to quit smoking was reported in 71.7% of participants, and was been significantly associated with: male gender (OR=3.25, 95% CI=1.65-6.41): age at 1st trial of smoking. 10-15 years (OR=2.11, 95% CI=1.03-4.32) along with age of ${\geq}15$ years (OR=3.10, 95% CI=1.20-7.88); days of smoking in the past 30 days (days <10 (OR=2.31, 95% CI=1.23-4.35) along with days ranging from 10-19 days (OR= 3.42, 95% CI=1.18-9.91); knowing that smoking is hazardous to health (OR=3.04, 95% CI=1.42-6.47); and finally, supporting smoking bans in public places (OR=1.89, 95% CI=1.11-3.25). Conclusions: A substantial number of participants were willing to quit smoking. Effective interventions focusing on providing information about the hazards of smoking and prohibiting smoking in public places could help initiate the intention to quit among youth smokers.
