Gender Inequality: The Husband-Wife Relationship and its Impact on Under-Five Children with Stunted Growth in Labotan Kandi Village, Banggai Islands Regency, Central Sulawesi, Indonesia

Atik Triratnawati,Eka Yuniati 숙명여자대학교 아시아여성연구원 2023 Asian Women Vol.39 No.4

The high incidence of stunting in isolated, outermost, and underdeveloped areas has not yet been successfully resolved. This study aimed to identify husband and wife relationships that affect decision-making patterns in handling children with stunted growth. Ethnographic research was used to find the root causes of gender inequality in the people of Labotan Kandi Village. Observations and interviews were conducted from July to August 2022 with 18 mothers of children under five with stunted growth and four male informants. Data analysis used a gender approach to allow for a valid analysis of gender relationship. The dominant role of men, owing to the patrilineal system and men as the main breadwinners of the family, leads to gender inequality. Womens lower education, younger age at marriage, and non-participation in family income improvement cause them to accept roles that are part of their commitment. Women are not decision makers in family matters, which makes them unable to address the root causes of stunting. Consequently, the suffering of the stunted children does not improve because of a lack of improvement in the underlying factors of stunting in the family.

      • Evaluation of changes in the maxillary alveolar bone after incisor intrusion

        Ezgi Atik,Hande Gorucu-Coskuner,Bengisu Akarsu-Guven,Tulin Taner 대한치과교정학회 2018 대한치과교정학회지 Vol.48 No.6

Objective: This study was performed to investigate the changes in alveolar bone after maxillary incisor intrusion and to determine the related factors in deep-bite patients. Methods: Fifty maxillary central incisors of 25 patients were evaluated retrospectively. The maxillary incisors in Group I (12 patients; mean age, 16.51 ± 1.32 years) were intruded with a base-arch, while those in Group II (13 patients; mean age, 17.47 ± 2.71 years) were intruded with miniscrews. Changes in the alveolar envelope were assessed using pre-intrusion and post-intrusion conebeam computed tomography images. Labial, palatal, and total bone thicknesses were evaluated at the crestal (3 mm), midroot (6 mm), and apical (9 mm) levels. Buccal and palatal alveolar crestal height, buccal bone height, and the prevalence of dehiscence were evaluated. Two-way repeated measure ANOVA was used to determine the significance of the changes. Pearson’s correlation coefficient analysis was performed to assess the relationship between dental and alveolar bone measurement changes. Results: Upper incisor inclination and intrusion changes were significantly greater in Group II than in Group I. With treatment, the alveolar bone thickness at the labial bone thickness (LBT, 3 and 6 mm) decreased significantly in Group II (p < 0.001) as compared to Group I. The LBT change at 3 mm was strongly and positively correlated with the amount of upper incisor intrusion (r = 0.539; p = 0.005). Conclusions: Change in the labial inclination and the amount of intrusion should be considered during upper incisor intrusion, as these factors increase the risk of alveolar bone loss.

        Pβ-connectedness in grill topological spaces

Abd El Fattah El Atik,Atef Hussien 원광대학교 기초자연과학연구소 2021 ANNALS OF FUZZY MATHEMATICS AND INFORMATICS Vol.22 No.1

A grill-$P_{\beta}$-connectedness is more generalization of $P_{\beta}$- connectedness and connectedness and amounting to grill-preconnectedness. The properties of this motif are studied and its relationship with other forms of grill-connectedness. Grill locally preindiscrete spaces are defiened as the spaces in which grill-preopen sets are grill-closed. In these spaces grill connectedness becomes amounting to grill preconnectedness and hence to grill-$P_{\beta}$-connectedness, and grill-semi-connectedness becomes equivalent to grill-$P_{\beta}$-connectedness. The motif of locally grill-$P_{\beta}$-connected space is introduced.

Phytochemical analysis and antioxidant properties of organic extracts obtained from Cynoglossum cheirifolium L.

Ilhem Bensaid,Fawzia Atik Bekkara,Imad Abdelhamid El Haci,Karima Belarbi,Fawzia Beddou,Chahrazed Bekhechi 경희대학교 융합한의과학연구소 2017 Oriental Pharmacy and Experimental Medicine Vol.17 No.4

The valorization of the local flora is the goal of the laboratory of Natural Products from the University of Tlemcen (Algeria). In this work, we report the scientific study of a medicinal plant Cynoglossum cheirifolium L. The crude methanol and tannin extracts of C. cheirifolium were preliminary analyzed for their phenolic contents (total phenolics, total flavonoids and total tannins). These extracts were evaluated for their antioxidant properties using different methods. The results showed that crude methanolic extract of the leaves part revealed high phenolic (134.93 ± 9.76 mg Gallic Acid Equivalent/g Dry Weigth), flavonoid (99.99 ± 0.72 mg Catechin Equivalent/g Dry Weigth) and condensed tannin contents (1.65 ± 0.05 mg Catechin Equivalent/g Dry Weigth). Furthermore, the results obtained from the study of the antioxidant activity showed that tannin extract of stems displayed the highest DPPH• scavenging ability with the inhibition concentration of 50% (IC50) value of 70 ± 1 μg/mL, it was comparable to the Vitamin E with an IC50 value of 60 ± 1 μg/mL. The vitamin E concentration required to reduce the ferric iron was lower (242 ± 6 μg/mL) than tannins extracted from leaves (214 ± 4 μg/mL). Hence, using an RP-HPLC-PDA (Reverse Phase-High Pressure Liquid Chromatography-PhotoDiode Array Detector) analysis, it was possible to identify phenolic acids and flavonoid like rutin; naringenin; rosmarinic acid; sinapic acid; p-coumaric acid; ferulic acid; caffeic acid and syringic acid.

Reliability of cone-beam computed tomography for temporomandibular joint analysis

        Hande Gorucu-Coskuner,Ezgi Atik,Hakan El 대한치과교정학회 2019 대한치과교정학회지 Vol.49 No.2

Objective: The aim was to assess the intraobserver and interobserver reliabilities of temporomandibular joint linear measurements and condylar shape classifications performed with cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). Methods: CBCT images of 30 patients were measured at two different time points by two orthodontists using the Dolphin 3D program (n = 60). Anterior, posterior, and superior joint space measurements and sagittal joint morphology classification in the sagittal view and medial and lateral joint space and mediolateral width measurements and coronal joint morphology classification in the coronal view were recorded. Intraclass-interclass correlation coefficients (ICC) and kappa statistics were used to assess intraobserver and interobserver reliability for the measurements and morphology classifications, respectively. Results: The ICC values were good for measurements of the posterior joint space by observer I and for measurements of the posterior, medial, and lateral joint spaces by observer II, while the other intraobserver measurements were excellent. Only the mediolateral width measurements showed excellent interobserver ICC values, while the other measurements showed good interobserver ICC values. Intraobserver agreement for the sagittal morphology classifications was moderate (k = 0.479) and almost perfect (k = 0.858) for observers I and II, respectively, while the corresponding agreement for the coronal morphology classifications was substantial for both observers. The interobserver agreement values for sagittal and coronal morphology classifications were slight (k = 0.181) and fair (k = 0.265), respectively. Conclusions: Linear temporomandibular joint measurements were reproducible and reliable in both intraobserver and interobserver evaluations. However, interobserver agreement for assessments of condylar shape was low.

Autoimmunity and intestinal colonization by Candida albicans in patients with type 1 diabetes at the time of the diagnosis

Gursoy, Semra,Kockar, Tuba,Atik, Sezen Ugan,Onal, Zerrin,Onal, Hasan,Adal, Erdal The Korean Pediatric Society 2018 Clinical and Experimental Pediatrics (CEP) Vol.61 No.7

Purpose: Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) is a chronic and immune-mediated disease, which is characterized by the progressive destruction of pancreatic beta cells. T1DM precipitates in genetically susceptible individuals through environmental factors. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the impact of autoimmunity and intestinal colonization of Candida albicans on the development of T1DM. Methods: Forty-two patients newly diagnosed with T1DM and 42 healthy subjects were included in this monocentric study. The basic and clinical characteristics of the patients were recorded. T1DM-, thyroid-, and celiac-associated antibodies were evaluated. Stool cultures for C. albicans were performed to assess whether or not gut integrity was impaired in patients with T1DM. Results: The evaluation of T1DM- and thyroid-associated antibodies showed that the prevalences of islet cell antibodies and antithyroperoxidase positivity were higher in the study patients than in the patients in the control group. Furthermore, the direct examination and culture of fresh stool samples revealed that 50% of the patients with T1DM and 23.8% of the control subjects had fungi (C. albicans). Conclusion: Through this study, we suggest that the presence of intestinal C. albicans colonization at the time of the diagnosis of T1DM may indicate impairment of normal intestinal microbiota. We also suggest that there may be a tendency of T1DM in patients with a high prevalence of intestinal C. albicans.

Decreased CRTH2 Expression and Response to Allergen Re-stimulation on Innate Lymphoid Cells in Patients With Allergen-Specific Immunotherapy

        Wat Mitthamsiri,Panitan Pradubpongsa,Atik Sangasapaviliya,Tadech Boonpiyathad 대한천식알레르기학회 2018 Allergy, Asthma & Immunology Research Vol.10 No.6

Purpose: Group 2 innate lymphoid cells (ILC2s) have been implicated in the pathogenesis of allergic disease. However, the effect of allergen-specific immunotherapy (AIT) on ILCs remains to be clarified. The aim of this study was to evaluate the levels of ILC subsets in allergic rhinitis (AR) patients in response to house dust mite (HDM)-specific immunotherapy. Methods: We enrolled 37 AR patients undergoing AIT (16 responders and 11 non-responders) for 2 years, 35 HDM AR patients and 28 healthy subjects. Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) were analyzed by flow cytometry to identify ILC subsets. Stimulation of ILC2s with recombinant allergen-specific protein was used to determine ILC2's activation (CD69 expression). Results: Responder AIT patients and healthy subjects had a decreased frequency of circulating ILC2s compared to non-responder AIT and AR patients. Conversely, ILC1s from responder AIT patients and healthy subjects showed increased frequency compared to non-responder AIT and AR patients. The frequency of ILC3s natural cytotoxicity receptor (NCR)+ and NCR− in responder AIT patients was significantly lower compared to AR patients and healthy subjects. The ILC1: ILC2 proportion in responder AIT patients was similar to that of healthy subjects. PBMCs from patients who were responders to AIT had a significantly lower expression of the activation marker CD69 on ILC2s in response to allergen re-stimulation compared to AR patients, but no difference compared to non-responder AIT patients and healthy subjects. Conclusions: We propose that AIT might affect ILC responses. The activation of ILC2s was reduced in AR patients treated with AIT. Our results indicate that a relative ILC1/ILC2 skewed response is a possible key to successful AIT.
