Notes on a Korean Scandal: The Blockbuster Social Critique of Veteran
Angeliki Katsarou 연세대학교 영어영문학과 BK21 Plus 사업단 2018 Situations: Cultural Studies in the Asian Context Vol.11 No.2
In the summer of 2015, the blockbuster crime film Veteran (Beterang, Ryoo Seung-wan) was released on the screens of South Korea, becoming the biggest box office success for that year and the third most successful Korean film ever. One of the most prominent elements of the film's identity was its caustic critique of some essential institutions of South Korean society, especially the law enforcement system and the powerful conglomerates. Veteran merges its political and social commentary with striking action film aesthetics, not neglecting to give depth to the former for the sake of reinforcing its generic identity as a blockbuster movie. This paper addresses the significance that a mainstream film such as Veteran attains when mediating topical matters of social relevance. Corruption, social injustice, mistreatment, and nepotism are negotiated on the silver screen as they become so omnipresent that they eventually find their way into otherwise traditionally entertainment-oriented venues. This phenomenon suggests that discussing widespread illegal and socially unsettling conduct is now more urgent than ever in the scandal-stricken modern Korea. The cinema, through its wide access to the public, serves as a conveyor of politically significant messages that dynamically interact with and ultimately influence the spectators’ collective memory.
Habitus, culturalism, uses of digital social networks: a perspective
Angeliki MONNIER 고려대학교 응용문화연구소 2021 에피스테메 Vol.- No.26
This text tackles the use of socio-numerical networks through the prism of the habitus, as developed by Pierre Bourdieu. It argues that the latter necessarily has a cultural dimension; not in an essentialist, organic sense, but as a socio-historically situated construct, the product of learning linked to given space-time. The argument developed stems from empirical research on the use of the LinkedIn platform by Greek and French expatriates.
An Experimental Study on the Effectiveness of Particle Tuned Mass Dampers
Angeliki Papalou 대한토목학회 2023 KSCE Journal of Civil Engineering Vol.27 No.10
The effectiveness of a particle-tuned mass damper was investigated experimentally using a small single story steel structure. Two cases were examined. First, the damper was suspended from the structure with a fixed weight inside the container and in the second case the fixed weight was replaced by particles of equal mass filling two unequal size compartments. In both cases, the frequency of the damper was close to the natural frequency of the structure. The dynamic behavior of the structure with the damper was examined under random excitation. It was found that while the root mean square (RMS) of the response acceleration was reduced in both cases, the substitution of the fixed weight with the particles increased the attenuation of the motion. Reduction of the RMS of the relative displacement was observed after the first few seconds of the excitation. The excitation level has a minimal effect on the effectiveness of the particle-tuned mass damper with the two unequal size compartments.
Chios Mastic Gum Consumption Has a Protective Effect on Ovariectomy-Induced Bone Loss in Rats

The purpose of this study was to examine the potential effect of Chios Mastic Gum (CMG) consumption on bone mineral density (BMD) and strength of ovariectomized rats. CMG is a known resin used from ancient times for its beneficial biological properties. Thirty mature female Wistar rats were randomized into three equal groups: sham-operated (control), ovariectomized (OVX), and ovariectomized and administered CMG per os (OVX+CMG). BMD of the total tibia, proximal tibia, and the 6th lumbar vertebra were measured at baseline and at 3 and 6 months post ovariectomy. Bone strength was assessed with three-point-bending (3pb) of the right femur. At 3 and 6 months, BMD values of the OVX+CMG group were significantly higher for the anatomical cites evaluated than those of the OVX group. Femoral thickness assessed via 3pb had intermediate values in the treated group compared to the other groups. Cytology of vaginal smears and uterine weight of the OVX+CMG group were consistent with estrogen depletion. Gastrocnemius muscle and intraperitoneal fat ratios to body weight (BW) of the OVX+CMG group did not significantly differ from the control group. Daily consumption CMG had a protective effect on BMD of the total and proximal tibia and the 6th lumbar vertebra of the rats, without causing undesirable effects on the vaginal epithelium and uterus. The 3pb results also demonstrated a favorable effect on the thickness of rat femurs. In addition, CMG was beneficial for both the muscular system and the intraperitoneal fat/BW ratio of the rats.

In response to the sustainability requirements set in the EU Commission´s “Green Deal” towards reduction of the greenhouse gas emissions, it is estimated that the structural design for deconstruction is going to contribute considerably to the sustainable development of the built environment. The demountability of multi-material structural systems basically depends on the shear connectors used in the structural system. This paper focuses on a type of demountable injected shear connector with an injected steel-reinforced resin (iSRR) which consists of spherical steel particles embedded in a resin. Its application to steel-toconcrete and steel-to-Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) decks is presented along with its benefits. In parallel, an overview of the experimental and numerical research on the evaluation of the mechanical properties of the demountable bolted connectors with iSRR is discussed. Last, detailed finite element (FE) models and a parametric study are performed to quantify the confinement level of the SRR material influenced by the oversized hole diameter.

Background and Purpose Although arbitrary blood pressure (BP) thresholds exist for acute ischemic stroke (AIS) patients eligible for intravenous thrombolysis (IVT), current international recommendations lack clarity on the impact of mean pre- and post-IVT BP levels on clinical outcomes. Methods Eligible studies involving IVT-treated AIS patients were identified that reported the association of mean systolic BP (SBP) or diastolic BP levels before and after IVT with the following outcomes: 3-month favorable functional outcome (modified Rankin Scale [mRS] scores of 0–1) and 3-month functional independence (mRS scores of 0–2), 3-month mortality and symptomatic intracranial hemorrhage (sICH). Unadjusted analyses of standardized mean differences and adjusted analyses of studies reporting odds ratios (ORadj) per 10 mm Hg BP increment were performed using random-effects models. Results We identified 26 studies comprising 56,513 patients. Higher pre- (P=0.02) and posttreatment (P=0.006) SBP levels were observed in patients with sICH. Patients with 3-month functional independence had lower post-treatment (P<0.001) SBP whereas trended towards lower pre-treatment (P=0.06) SBP. In adjusted analyses, elevated pre- (ORadj, 1.08; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.01 to 1.16) and post-treatment (ORadj, 1.13; 95% CI, 1.01 to 1.25) SBP levels were associated with increased likelihood of sICH. Increasing pre- (ORadj, 0.91; 95% CI, 0.84 to 0.98) and post-treatment (ORadj, 0.70; 95% CI, 0.57 to 0.87) SBP values were also related to lower odds of 3-month functional independence. Conclusions We found that elevated BP levels adversely impact AIS outcomes in patients receiving IVT. Future randomized-controlled clinical trials will provide definitive data on the aforementioned association.
Multiparametric ultrasound for upper extremity dialysis access evaluation

The evolution of ultrasound (US) techniques has greatly improved the evaluation of many parameters in dialysis vascular access, which is typically achieved through an arteriovenous fistula (AVF) or graft (AVG). These techniques include grayscale B-mode, color Doppler, power Doppler, spectral Doppler, non-Doppler US flow imaging techniques, contrast-enhanced US, and elastography. In conjunction with a patient’s medical history and physical examination, US provides crucial information about the native vascular bed prior to the surgical creation of an arteriovenous anastomosis. It also tracks the maturation progress of the newly created AVF or AVG and aids in diagnosing potential complications of the vascular access. These complications include thrombosis, steal syndrome, aneurysms, pseudoaneurysms, hematomas, infection, ischemic neuropathy, exacerbation of preexisting congestive heart failure, and stenosis.
