Legal Frameworks to Promote Inclusive Education for Children with Disabilities
Allison deFranco 한국장애아동인권학회 2013 장애아동인권연구 Vol.4 No.2
Children with disabilities throughout the world are often marginalized and excluded from mainstream society. In many countries, children with disabilities are sent away to institutions where they receive no education and are isolated from society for their entire lives. In other countries, children with disabilities are forced to attend separate schools instead of general schools in the community with their peers. The vast barriers that children with disabilities face in accessing education in most societies has led to a low employment rate for persons with disabilities and a disproportionally high rate of poverty. In 2011, the World Report on Disability indicated that some progress has been made in recent decades, but still predominantly found that “children and youth with disabilities are less likely to start school or attend school than other children. They also have lower transition rates to higher levels of education.” The Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) addresses these issues and specifically outlines the right to education for persons with disabilities. In this presentation I will discuss the right to education in international law generally and then review the CRPD’s inclusive education provision. Thereafter, I will address the benefits of inclusive education. I will conclude by providing recommendations to States Parties to facilitate the transition to an inclusive education system.

Abstract

GEANT4 is a software toolkit for the simulation of the passage of particles through matter. It is used by a large number of experiments and projects in a variety of application domains, including high energy physics, astrophysics and space science, medical physics and radiation protection. Over the past several years, major changes have been made to the toolkit in order to accommodate the needs of these user communities, and to efficiently exploit the growth of computing power made available by advances in technology. The adaptation of GEANT4 to multithreading, advances in physics, detector modeling and visualization, extensions to the toolkit, including biasing and reverse Monte Carlo, and tools for physics and release validation are discussed here.

Highlights

Multithreading resulted in a smaller memory footprint and nearly linear speed-up.

Scoring options, faster geometry primitives, more versatile visualization were added.

Improved electromagnetic and hadronic models and cross sections were developed.

Reverse Monte Carlo and general biasing methods were added.

Physics validation efforts were expanded and new validation tools were added.

Examining Korean Preschoolers’ Learning with YouTube Videos: A Multimodal and Multiliteracy Approach
( Allison S. Henward ),동풀잎 ( Pool Ip Dong ) 한국유아교육학회 2021 INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION Vol.27 No.1
This study focuses on a three-year-old boy’s car play with YouTube in light of multiliteracy practices and learning. Employing an ethnographic approach (participant observations, informal interviews, and collecting documents and artifacts), we traced his various car plays with YouTube videos at home for six months. Here we demonstrate how he skillfully and creatively consumed, produced, modified multiliteracies with YouTube videos, shown in his play with toys. In his production of multimodal texts, he engages with multiple linguistic repertoires and creates transformative practices texts, such as body movement, gesture, music, and routines in his play space. We consider and analyze his car play as text, revealing young children's dynamic multimodal ways of knowing and producing their interests in home spaces. The findings can evoke the virtual realm of learning and today's communications milieu even during the COVID-19 pandemic situation and shed light on contemporary young children's complex and diverse play and (in)formal learning with digital cultures.
Divorcing Diagnosis From Treatment: Contemporary Management of Low-Risk Prostate Cancer
Allison S. Glass,Sanoj Punnen,Matthew R. Cooperberg 대한비뇨의학회 2013 Investigative and Clinical Urology Vol.54 No.7
Today, the majority of men with newly diagnosed prostate cancer will present with low-risk features of the disease. Because prostate cancer often takes an insidious course, it is debated whether the majority of these men require radical treatment and the accompanying derangement of quality of life domains imposed by surgery, radiation, and hormonal therapy. Investigators have identified various selection criteria for “insignificant disease,” or that which can be monitored for disease progression while safely delaying radical treatment. In addition to the ideal definition of low risk, a lack of randomized trials comparing the various options for treatment in this group of men poses a great challenge for urologists. Early outcomes from active surveillance cohorts support its use in carefully selected men with low-risk disease features, but frequent monitoring is required. Patient selection and disease monitoring methods will require refinement that will likely be accomplished through the increased use of biomarkers and specialized imaging techniques.

A modular multidisciplinary analysis and optimization framework has been built with the goal of performing conceptual design of an advanced efficient supersonic air vehicle. This paper addresses the specific challenge of designing this type of aircraft for a long range, supersonic cruise mission with a payload release. The framework includes all the disciplines expected for multidisciplinary supersonic aircraft design, although it also includes disciplines specifically required by an advanced aircraft that is tailless and has embedded engines. Several disciplines have been developed at multifidelity levels. The framework can be readily adapted to the conceptual design of other supersonic aircraft. Favorable results obtained from running the analysis framework for a B-58 supersonic bomber test case are presented as a validation of the methods employed.
