Serine and cysteine proteases of Rhynchophorus ferrugineus (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) larvae raised on date palms (Phoenix dactylifera)

        Ali Darvishzadeh,Ali Reza Bandani,Azam Amiri,Seyed Qasem Mousavi 한국응용곤충학회 2015 Journal of Asia-Pacific Entomology Vol.18 No.3

The red palm weevil Rhynchophorus ferrugineus (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) is a serious pest of date palms in many Middle East countries. The aimof the current study was to obtain a good understanding of the gut proteolytic activity of R. ferrugineus. Thus, the enzymes in the alimentary tract were isolated and their properties were investigated using a general protease substrates (azocasein and hemoglobin) as well as specific substrates of trypsin, chymotrypsin, elastase, cathepsin L, and cathepsin B. Results showed that in the gut of the RPW both serine and cysteine proteases are present although with different activities. Among the active proteases, trypsin was the most active in the gut followed by chymotrypsin and elastase. The activities of these three proteases in the larval gut were 1.32, 1.12 and 0.32 U, respectively. Among cysteine proteases, cathepsin L and cathepsin B were active in the larval gut. The activity of cathepsin L was 0.82 U while that of cathepsin B was 0.31 U. The order of the activity of the proteases in the larval gut was trypsin N chymotrypsin N cathepsin L N elastase N cathepsin B. The effect of pH on general protease substrates hydrolysis showed two distinct peaks: one in the acidic area (pH 6.0) and another in the alkaline area (pH 10.0); these correspond to cysteine and serine protease activities, respectively. Zymogram analysis along with inhibition studies revealed that four proteases are present in the gut.

Metal Coating on Ultrafine Polyester Non-woven Fabrics and Their Ageing Properties

        Azam Ali,Vijay Baheti,Jiri Militky,Zaman Khan,Guocheng Zhu 한국섬유공학회 2019 Fibers and polymers Vol.20 No.7

The presented research work proposed a simple technique to metalize the milife fabric (very fine thickness) withsilver coating. The polyester fabrics were firstly sensitized with copper, and then silver plating was performed on the surface. The presence of silver over the fabric was observed by scanning electron microscope and respective EDX spectra. Thechange in the electrical conductivity, electromagnetic shielding and joule heating properties were examined for differentelectroplating time. The electrically conductive fabrics showed low electrical resistance with high EMI shielding overfrequency range of 30 MHz to 1.5 GHz. To have an idea about the durability of electrical conductivity under stretch load, the75 cycles of stretch and release were carried out. Furthermore, the heating performance of silver plated fabric was studiedthrough measuring the change in temperature at the surface of the fabric while applying a voltage difference across the fabric. Lastly, the effect of ageing parameters like washing, oxidation and sulfidation were examined on the functional and comfortproperties (i.e. thermal conductivity and stiffness) of conductive fabric.

Comparative Performance of Copper and Silver Coated Stretchable Fabrics

        Azam Ali,Vijay Baheti,Jiri Militky,Zaman Khan,Syed Qummer Zia Gilani 한국섬유공학회 2018 Fibers and polymers Vol.19 No.3

The present work described the development of multifunctional, electrically conductive and durable fabrics by coating of silver and copper particles using a dipping- drying method. The particles were directly grown on fabric structure to form electrically conductive fibers. Particles were found to fill the spaces between the microfibers, and were stacked together to form networks with high electrical conductivity. The electrically conductive fabrics showed low resistance with high stretch ability. The utility of conductive fabrics was analyzed for electromagnetic shielding ability over frequency range of 30 MHz to 1.5 GHz. The EMI shielding was found to increase with increase in concentration of copper and silver particles. Furthermore, the heating performance of the copper and silver coated fabric was studied through measuring the change in temperature at the surface of the fabric while applying a voltage difference across the fabric. The maximum temperature (119 oC for silver and 112 oC for copper) were obtained when the applied voltage was 10 V. Moreover, the role of deposited particles on antibacterial properties was examined against pathogenic bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. At the end, the durability of coated fabrics was examined against several washing cycles. The fabrics showed good retention of the particles, proved by small loss in the conductivity of the material after washing.

Preventable Lifestyle Risk Factors for Non-Communicable Diseases in the Pakistan Adolescents Schools Study 1 (PASS-1)

        Ali Khan Khuwaja,Saleem Khawaja,Komal Motwani,Adeel Akbar Khoja,Iqbal Syed Azam,Zafar Fatmi,Badar Sabir Ali,Muhammad Masood Kadir 대한예방의학회 2011 예방의학회지 Vol.44 No.5

Objectives: The rising burden of preventable risk factors for non-communicable diseases (NCDs) among adolescents is a major public health challenge worldwide. We identified the preventable risk factors for NCDs in adolescents. Methods: In a school-based study, pre-tested structured questionnaires were completed by 414 adolescents (14 to 17years) at six schools in three cities in Pakistan. The chi-squared test and adjusted odds ratio (aOR) with 95% confidence interval (CI) were calculated in a multinomial logistic regression analysis. Results: Over 80% of the adolescents had unhealthy diets, and 54% were physically inactive. Most adolescents were exposed to passive smoking, and 14% were also current smokers. More than one-third of participants chewed betel nut,and one-quarter used oral tobacco. More girls were physically inactive (OR, 4.07; 95% CI, 2.69 to 6.17), whereas a greater proportion of boys were current smokers (OR, 2.17; 95% CI, 1.19 to 3.91), exposed to passive smoking (OR, 2.57;95% CI, 1.72 to 3.83), and using betel nut (OR, 2.03; 95% CI, 1.34 to 3.06). Only 3.1% of the participants were without any preventable lifestyle risk factor for NCDs, and over 80% had ≥2 factors. Co-existence of risk factors was independently associated with fathers being blue-collar workers (aOR, 3.57; 95% CI, 1.07 to 11.92) and parents not treating their child fairly (aOR, 5.05; 95% CI, 1.29 to 19.78). Conclusions: Most of the adolescents studied had preventable risk factors for NCDs. These results warrant comprehensive and integrated interventions to prevent lifestyle risk factors, and parents are front-line stakeholders.

Fish Purchasing Behavior and Implications for Promoting Sustainable Consumption: A Malaysian Case

Ee Von GOH(Ee Von GOH ),Susan AZAM-ALI(Susan AZAM-ALI ),Fiona MCCULLOUGH(Fiona MCCULLOUGH ) 한국유통과학회 2023 Asian Journal of Business Environment (AJBE) Vol.13 No.2

Purpose: Motivated by the fact that Malaysians fish consumption patterns and preferences have raised sustainability concerns, this study aims to understand the key entry points to promote sustainable consumption and increased uptake of sustainably sourced fish among Malaysian consumers. This is achieved by exploring the individual determinants of Malaysian consumers’ fish purchasing behaviors and their subjective and objective knowledge of fish. Research design, data, and methodology: A survey was conducted using interviewled questionnaire on 250 consumers in selected Malaysian populations recruited via street-intercept random sampling. Results: Findings confirmed the homogeneous societal culture of fish consumption amongst Malaysians. Females and consumers with advanced degree are found to be potentially effective primary targets of sustainable consumption interventions. Future interventions should consider the solutions to the low health and sustainability literacies among Malaysian consumers, and limited availability, accessibility, and affordability of sustainable options in Malaysia. Conclusion: The study findings provide new insights for the multisectoral stakeholders in the region working on promoting sustainable fish consumption and sustainable fisheries in general.

Development of electrolyte SAFT-HR equation of state for single electrolyte solutions

Azam Najafloo,Farzaneh Feyzi,Ali Taghi Zoghi 한국화학공학회 2014 Korean Journal of Chemical Engineering Vol.31 No.12

The explicit version of the mean spherical approximation (MSA) is added to the SAFT-HR equation ofstate (EoS) to model aqueous alkali halide solutions. The proposed electrolyte equation of state (eEoS) has two par-ameters per each ion. Two methods are in common use for calculating ion parameters: ion-based and salt-based. Inthis work, the electrolyte parameters are obtained for 61 single electrolyte solutions using salt-based method. Usingthis approach, mean ionic activity coefficients of the 61 aqueous electrolyte systems were modeled with overall averageabsolute relative percent deviation (AAD%) of 3.91. Also, for testing the ability of the model in terms of ionic par-ameters, six salts (NaCl, NaBr, NaI, KCl, KBr and KI) were studied using ion-based method. The liquid densities, os-motic coefficients and salt mean ionic activity coefficients of 6 aqueous electrolyte solutions were modeled with overallAAD% of 0.68, 2.28 and 0.96, respectively.

Luteolin mediated synthesis of rod-shaped rutile titanium dioxide nanoparticles: Assay of their biocompatibility

Azam Chahardoli,Farshad Qalekhani,Yalda Shokoohinia,Ali Fattahi 한국공업화학회 2022 Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Vol.111 No.-

Titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2NPs) were produced using a crud flavonoid luteolin (LT) by the greenprocess. Physicochemical characterizations of LT mediated synthesis of TiO2NPs (LT-TiO2NPs) were analyzedby different techniques. The biocompatibility of LT-TiO2NPs was evaluated by assessing their cytotoxicity, inhibition of protein denaturation, hemolysis effects, and membrane stabilization activity. Thesynthesized LT-TiO2NPs exhibited mostly rod-shaped morphology, rutile crystalline structure with lengthabout 33.3–135 nm and width in 16.6–58 nm. Under LT-TiO2NPs treatments, the cell viability of cancercells was decreased in a dose-dependent manner. According to the results, the IC50 values of LT-TiO2NPswere between 12.5–25 lg/mL for A375 and MCF-7 cancer cells, and its value was below 50 lg/mL for skinfibroblast. These NPs also induced intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation and causedmitochondrial disruption in cancer cells, leading to the induction of intrinsic apoptosis. These biosynthesizedNPs did not show denaturation of bovine serum albumin (BSA) protein and hemolytic or heatinducedhemolytic effects, which confirmed their membrane stabilization activity without damagingred blood cells (RBCs) membrane integrity. Therefore, this research provides valuable results in the caseof green synthesis of LT-TiO2NPs and their specific properties, biocompatibility, and their potential to beused in biomedical fields.
