<P>The ALICE Collaboration at the LHC has measured the J/<I>ψ</I> and <I>ψ</I>′ photoproduction at mid-rapidity in ultra-peripheral Pb–Pb collisions at [FORMULA OMISSION].</P><P>The charmonium is identified via its leptonic decay for events where the hadronic activity is required to be minimal. The analysis is based on an event sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about 23 μb−1. The cross section for coherent and incoherent J/<I>ψ</I> production in the rapidity interval −0.9<<I>y</I><0.9, are [FORMULA OMISSION] and [FORMULA OMISSION], respectively. The results are compared to theoretical models for J/<I>ψ</I> production and the coherent cross section is found to be in good agreement with those models incorporating moderate nuclear gluon shadowing at Bjorken-<I>x</I> around 10−3, such as EPS09 parametrization. In addition the cross section for the process <I>γγ</I>→<I>e</I>+<I>e</I>− has been measured and found to be in agreement with models implementing QED at leading order.</P>

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Bimodal porous structures were prepared by combining conventional sacrificial template and partial sintering methods. These porous structures were analysed by comparing pore characteristics and gas permeation properties of alumina/mullite specimens sintered at different temperatures. The pore characteristics were investigated by SEM, mercury porosimetry, and capillary flow porosimetry. A bimodal pore structure was observed. One type of pore was induced by starch, which acted as a sacrificial template. The other pore type was due to partial sintering. The pores produced by starch were between 2 and 10µm whereas those produced by partial sintering exhibited pore size of 0.1–0.5µm. The effects of sintering temperature on porosity, gas permeability, and mullite phase formation were studied. The formation of the mullite phase was confirmed by XRD. Compressive strengths of 37.9MPa and 12.4MPa with porosities of 65.3% and 70% were achieved in alumina and mullite specimens sintered at 1600°C.</P>

Soil salinity is one of the severe threats of climate change that inflicts heavy losses to vegetable production. Potassium (K) has been considered essential approach against abiotic stresses in food crops, however, understanding of K regulated mechanisms for inducing tolerance to NaCl stress in cabbage (Brassica oleracea L.) plants is, still elusive. Here, we report the supplemental K effects on antioxidant defense system and physiological processes that may influence the cabbage production under saline conditions. Initially, cabbage varieties (‘Stone Head’, ‘Golden Acre’, ‘9j-940’, ‘Beauty Ball’, ‘Green Ball’, ‘Green Rise’, ‘Marco F-1’) were tested under NaCl stress (50, 100, 150, and 200 mM) for their higher growth, vigor index and mineral contents. The identified cabbage var. salt-tolerant, cv. Beauty Ball (BB) and salt-sensitive cv. Green Ball (GB) were further exposed to foliar K (5 and 10 mM solutions of KNO3) under the same NaCl regimes. NaCl stress markedly inhibited photosynthetic efficiency, water status and chlorophyll pigments, thereby, resulted in reduced dry biomass of both varieties. Nevertheless, exogenous K spray at 10 mM caused positive gain in leaf water relations, chlorophyll contents in both cabbage varieties. The ameliorative impacts of K were more pronounced in salt-tolerant cv. BB as compared to salt-sensitive cv. GB in terms of higher accumulation of total soluble proteins, total free amino acids, proline contents, upregulated antioxidant activities and enhanced gas exchange characteristics. Hence, improvement in growth and K+/Na+ ratio of cabbage plants by foliar K application (10 mM) were related to up-regulation of physiological and biochemical mechanisms under saline conditions.

Arsenic and nitrate are ill-famed environmental pollutants that are responsible for various lethal diseases. Their removal from drinking water is very essential. In present study, newly synthesized alumina supported nano zerovalentzinc (Alumina-nZvZ) has been tested to remove arsenic and nitrate. Quantitative analyses of arsenic have beenperformed spectrophotometrically and while that of nitrates ions colorimetrically. After optimization of time and amountof adsorbent, Langmuir, Freundlich and D-R isotherms were applied to determine different parameters for the assessmentof adsorption. Synthesized samples were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to evaluate porosityand void size. Alumina coated with reduced ZnCl2 showed better efficiency for removal of arsenic and nitrate ions. Kinetics of adsorption was evaluated by using pseudo first-order and pseudo second-order rate equations.

In this research, intelligent sliding mode controls are presented as robust controls for robot manipulators. The objective of the study is to design controls for robot manipulators without the knowledge of the boundary of the uncertainties by using an intelligent sliding mode control (SMC) while elucidating the robustness of the fuzzy SMC. A sliding mode control provides for unlimited accuracy in presence of bounded disturbance, although the sliding mode controller also causes chattering. Chattering is undesirable for use with actual component, since it might causes damage to them with a subsequent loss of accuracy. Such chatter is caused by overestimation of the controller gain. An intelligent sliding mode is proposed as a solution to the problems created by chattering; to illustrate, a continuum robot manipulator is simulated with an intelligent sliding mode control. The performance of intelligent gain sliding mode controller is demonstrated through the simulation results. The results of the simulations show the effectiveness for chattering mitigation by means of avoiding overestimation, and the robustness of an intelligent sliding mode control.

Phytic acid (PA) has been reported to have positive nutritional benefits and prevent cancer formation. This study investigated the anticancer activity of rice bran PA against hepatocellular carcinoma (HepG2) cells. Cytotoxicty of PA (0.5 to 4mM) was examined by MTT and LDH assays after 24 and 48h treatment. Apoptotic activity was evaluated by expression analysis of apoptosis-regulatory genes [i.e. p53, Bcl-2, Bax, Caspase-3 and -9] by reverse transcriptase-PCR and DNA fragmentation assay. The results showed antioxidant activity of PA in Fe3+ reducing power assay ($p{\leq}0.03$). PA inhibited the growth of HepG2 cells in a concentration dependent manner ($p{\leq}0.04$). After 48h treatment, cell viability was recorded 84.7, 74.4, 65.6, 49.6, 36.0 and 23.8% in MTT assay and 92.6, 77.0%, 66.8%, 51.2, 40.3 and 32.3% in LDH assay at concentrations of 1, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5, 3.0, and 3.5mM, respectively. Hence, treatment of PA for 24h, recorded viability of cells 93.5, 88.6, 55.5, 34.6 and 24.4% in MTT assay and 94.2, 86.1%, 59.7%, 42.3 and 31.6%, in LDH assay at concentrations of 1, 2.2, 3.0, 3.6 and 4.0mM, respectively. PA treated HepG2 cells showed up-regulation of p53, Bax, Caspase-3 and -9, and down-regulation of Bcl-2 gene ($p{\leq}0.01$). At the $IC_{50}$ (2.49mM) of PA, the p53, Bax, Caspase-3 and-9 genes were up-regulated by 6.03, 7.37, 19.7 and 14.5 fold respectively. Also, the fragmented genomic DNA in PA treated cells provided evidence of apoptosis. Our study confirmed the biological activity of PA and demonstrated growth inhibition and induction of apoptosis in HepG2 cells with modulation of the expression of apoptosis-regulatory genes.

The effect of Mn-promotion on high surface area Al-pillared montmorillonite (AlMMT) supported Co nanoparticles prepared by hydrothermal method have been investigated. A series of different weight% Mn-promoted Co nanoparticles were prepared and characterized by XRD, TPR, TGA, BET and SEM techniques. An increase in the surface area of MMT is observed with Al-pillaring. Fischer-Tropsch catalytic activity of the as prepared catalysts was studied in a fixed bed micro reactor at $225^{\circ}C$, $H_2/CO$ = 2 and at 1 atm pressure. The data showed that by the addition of Mn the selectivity of $C_1$ dropped drastically while that of $C_2-C_{12}$ hydrocarbons increased significantly over all the Mn-promoted Co/AlMMT catalysts. The $C_{13}-C_{20}$ hydrocarbons remained almost same for all the catalysts while the selectivity of $C_{21+}$ long chain hydrocarbons decreased considerably with the addition of Mn. The catalyst with 3.5%Mn showed lowest $C_{21+}$ and highest $C_2-C_{12}$ hydrocarbons selectivity due to cracking of long chain hydrocarbons over acidic sites of MMT.

Cultural and personal issues resulting from dispersed teams are considered to be serious barriers to form trust and organize effective agile teams. However, apart from separate, reported evidence of such issues from work experience, there has been no theoretical classification in literature. This paper provides a list and analysis of common challenges mainly resulting from cultural differences and barriers in Agile Software Development (ASD) offshore teams. The data source comprise articles published in IEEE, mostly of conferences related to ASD. Among the articles, papers with concrete evidence of Agile Methods (AM) implementation were selected. The results show that despite the relative significance of such issues, ASD adopters typically still rely on their own experience, and creativity rather than using well-defined methods. Moreover, this study reveals that the notion of trust, as discussed in the literature, mainly refers to maintaining the pace of communication, which is the focal point in ASD.

PreS domain of Hepatitis B virus (HBV) surface antigen is a good candidate for an effective vaccine as it activates both B and T cells besides binding to hepatocytes. This report deals with overexpression and purification of adr subtype of surface antigen that is more prevalent in Pakistan. PreS region, comprising 119 aa preS1 region plus a 55 aa preS2 region plus 11 aa from the N-terminal S region, was inserted in pET21a+ vector, cloned in E. coli $DH5\alpha$ cells and expressed in E. coli BL21 codon+ cells. The conditions for over expression were optimized using different concentrations of IPTG (0.01-5 mM), and incubating the cells at different temperatures (23-$41^{\circ}C$) for different durations (0-6 h). The cells were grown under the given optimized conditions (0.5 mM IPTG concentration at $37^{\circ}C$ for 4 h), lysed by sonication and the protein was purified by ion exchange chromatography. On the average, 24.5 mg of recombinant protein was purified per liter of culture. The purified protein was later lyophilized and stored at $-80^{\circ}C$.

This paper presents a scheme for interpolating intersecting uniform cubic B-spline curves by Catmull-Clark subdivision surfaces. The curves are represented by polygonal complexes and the neighborhoods of intersection points are modeled by X-Configurations. When these structures are embedded within a control polyhedron, the corresponding curves will automatically be interpolated by the surface limit of subdivision of the polyhedron. The paper supplies a construction which clearly shows that interpolation can still be guaranteed even in the absence of symmetry at the X-configurations. In this sense, this scheme generalizes an already existing technique by the same authors, thereby allowing more freedom to designers.
