        ANALYSIS OF A FOURTH ORDER SCHEME AND APPLICATION OF LOCAL DEFECT CORRECTION METHOD

        This paper provides a new application similar to the Local Defect Correction (LDC) technique to solve Poisson problem -u"(x) = f(x) with Dirichlet boundary conditions. The exact solution is supposed to have high activity in some region of the domain. LDC is combined with a fourth order compact scheme which is recently developed in Abbas (Num. Meth. Partial differential equations, 2013). Numerical tests illustrate the interest of this application.

      • Direct Coombs Test Positivity in B-Chronic Lymphoid Leukemia: a Marker of Advanced Clinical Disease

        Background: Chronic lymphoid leukemia (CLL) is a malignant hematopoietic disorder, the most common of all adult leukemias with a distinctive immunophenotype. It is well established that CLL patients can have autoimmune complications, amongst them autoimmune hemolytic anemia as the most frequent. This study was carried out to determine the frequency of direct Coombs Test positivity in CLL patients and its possible correlation with Rai staging, hematological parameters and biochemical markers. Materials and Methods: This descriptive cross sectional study was carried at Liaquat National Hospital from January 2011 to June 2013. Sixty untreated patients with B- chronic lymphoid leukemia were enrolled. Complete blood count, direct Coombs test, serum urea, creatinine, uric acid and LDH levels were determined. Data were compiled and analyzed using SPSS version 21. Results: Out of 60 patients, 42(70%) were males and 18(30%) were females. Mean age was $59{\pm}9.2years$. Male to female ratio was 2.1: 1. The frequency of direct antiglobulin test (DAT) positivity was found to be 23.3%. The monospecific IgG was positive in 11 patients (18.3%); C3d positivity was evident in 1 patient (1.6%) and 2 patients (3.3%) had dual IgG and C3d positivity. The mean hemoglobin was $10.8{\pm}2.4gm/dl$. Significantly low mean hemoglobin of $8.3{\pm}3.0gm/dl$ was seen in Coombs positive patients compared with negative patients having a mean hemoglobin level of $11.7{\pm}1.6gm/dl$ (P<0.001). DAT positivity also demonstrated a positive association with advanced Rai stage III disease (P<0.01). No associations were noted with age, gender and biochemical markers. Conclusions: Direct Coombs test positivity in CLL in our patients, unlike in Western studies, appears relatively high, indicating significant autoimmune hemolytic anemia and advanced Rai stage in our setting. DAT positivity can be considered as a surrogative marker for advanced clinical disease.

      • An Efficient Multiple Cell Upsets Tolerant Content-Addressable Memory

        <P>Multiple cell upsets (MCUs) become more and more problematic as the size of technology reaches or goes below 65 nm. The percentage of MCUs is reported significantly larger than that of single cell upsets (SCUs) in 20 nm technology. In SRAM and DRAM, MCUs are tackled by incorporating single-error correcting double-error detecting (SEC-DED) code and interleaved data columns. However, in content-addressable memory (CAM), column interleaving is not practically possible. A novel error correction code (ECC) scheme is proposed in this paper that will cater for ever-increasing MCUs. This work demonstrated that m parity bits are sufficient to cater for up to m-bit MCUs, with an understanding of the physical grouping of MCUs. The results showed that the proposed scheme requires 85% fewer parity bits compared to traditional Hamming distance based schemes.</P>

        Giant Basal Cell Carcinoma Causing Axillary Contracture: A Case Report of an Unusual Localization of an Advanced Case

        Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common type of non-melanoma skin cancer. Although BCC arises most commonly in sun-exposed areas of the body, such as the head and neck, it infrequently can be seen in sun-protected parts as well. Axilla is one of the least encountered areas of BCC. Delay in the diagnosis or management alongside negligence of the patient can lead to a tumor reaching a giant size. We report a case of giant axillary BCC in a 59-years old female patient with no known risk factors for skin cancers. The tumor was excised with wide margins, and the tissue defect was reconstructed with latissimus dorsi musculocutaneous flap. A 3-year follow-up did not show any sign of recurrence or metastasis.

        COMMON FIXED POINT AND INVARIANT APPROXIMATION RESULTS

        Necessary conditions for the existence of common fixed points for noncommuting mappings satisfying generalized contractive conditions in the setup of certain metrizable topological vector spaces are obtained. As applications, related results on best approximation are derived. Our results extend, generalize and unify various known results in the literature.

        Survival Analysis of Gastric Cancer Patients with Incomplete Data

        Purpose: Survival analysis of gastric cancer patients requires knowledge about factors that affect survival time. This paper attempted to analyze the survival of patients with incomplete registered data by using imputation methods. Materials and Methods: Three missing data imputation methods, including regression, expectation maximization algorithm, and multiple imputation (MI) using Monte Carlo Markov Chain methods, were applied to the data of cancer patients referred to the cancer institute at Imam Khomeini Hospital in Tehran in 2003 to 2008. The data included demographic variables, survival times, and censored variable of 471 patients with gastric cancer. After using imputation methods to account for missing covariate data, the data were analyzed using a Cox regression model and the results were compared. Results: The mean patient survival time after diagnosis was 49.1±4.4 months. In the complete case analysis, which used information from 100 of the 471 patients, very wide and uninformative confidence intervals were obtained for the chemotherapy and surgery hazard ratios (HRs). However, after imputation, the maximum confidence interval widths for the chemotherapy and surgery HRs were 8.470 and 0.806, respectively. The minimum width corresponded with MI. Furthermore, the minimum Bayesian and Akaike information criteria values correlated with MI (−821.236 and −827.866, respectively). Conclusions: Missing value imputation increased the estimate precision and accuracy. In addition, MI yielded better results when compared with the expectation maximization algorithm and regression simple imputation methods.

        A Conceptual Framework for Determination of Appropriate Business Model in e-Learning Industry in Iran

        Purpose – The purpose of this study is to present a framework for determining the most appropriate business model for e-learning. Research design, data, and methodology – The Electronics Branch of Azad University has been elected as a case study in this research. This study conducted using a descriptive method. The information was obtained using interviews with experts including managers, faculty and students at the Electronics Branch of Azad University. Results – Three service-product system (product oriented system, use an oriented and result oriented system) approaches determined a framework for the formation of a portfolio. This portfolio is including three types of e-learning business models. Examining the relevant characteristics, correspondence of behaviorism learning theory with a product-oriented approach, correspondence of cognitivism theory with a user-oriented approach and in finally match correspondence of constructivist learning theory with a results-oriented approach which is evident. Conclusions – After reviewing the literature on the fields of e-learning, business model and product - service systems, we have achieved three types of e-learning business models. Then the variables in any of the business models were defined by using business model canvas tool and thus a portfolio consisting of three types of e-learning business model canvas was obtained.

        Nickel ion removal using nanoporous poly(styrene-co divinyl benzene) copolymer

        To achieve a suitable porous structure and high mechanical strength that is extremely valuable properties in adsorbent polymeric particles, poly(styrene-co-divinylbenzene) with high amounts of cross-linker and diverse proportions of diluent agent (porogen) were synthesized according to the methodology of the suspension polymerization technique. The structural characteristics of the particles and their adsorption properties for adsorption of Nickel ions were studied. Effect of solvent type and monomeric fraction on particles morphology and porosity was discussed. The solvents including n-heptane (HEP) and acetonitrile and monomer fraction was 50% and 30% of divinylbenzene (DVB). From the results obtained, we decided to apply an adsorbent with high mechanical strength and a porous structure appropriate for absorbing the Ni(II). The copolymer was characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) analysis. We used scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) tests to study the morphology and particle size of the nanoparticles. According to the results, the copolymers synthesized with n-heptane have more porosity. Also an increase in the percentage of DVB caused finer pores. After synthesis of copolymer the applicability of these polymer beads to separation and concentration of Ni(II) is discussed. In separation of Ni(II) from aqueous solution, the effects of pH, temperature and time are discussed and thermodynamic and kinetic calculations are done and its isotherm are fitted with various equations.
