      • FLORA: Fuzzy Logic - Objective Risk Analysis for Intrusion Detection and Prevention

Alwi M Bamhdi International Journal of Computer ScienceNetwork S 2023 International journal of computer science and netw Vol.23 No.5

The widespread use of Cloud Computing, Internet of Things (IoT), and social media in the Information Communication Technology (ICT) field has resulted in continuous and unavoidable cyber-attacks on users and critical infrastructures worldwide. Traditional security measures such as firewalls and encryption systems are not effective in countering these sophisticated cyber-attacks. Therefore, Intrusion Detection and Prevention Systems (IDPS) are necessary to reduce the risk to an absolute minimum. Although IDPSs can detect various types of cyber-attacks with high accuracy, their performance is limited by a high false alarm rate. This study proposes a new technique called Fuzzy Logic - Objective Risk Analysis (FLORA) that can significantly reduce false positive alarm rates and maintain a high level of security against serious cyber-attacks. The FLORA model has a high fuzzy accuracy rate of 90.11% and can predict vulnerabilities with a high level of certainty. It also has a mechanism for monitoring and recording digital forensic evidence which can be used in legal prosecution proceedings in different jurisdictions.

Evaluation of Salmonella cross contamination at retail chicken meat outlets in Kandy, Sri Lanka

Alwis, Upeksha S.,Mudannayake, Deshani C.,Jayasena, Dinesh D.,Ubeyarathna, Kamalika J.H. Institute of Agricultural Science 2014 Korean Journal of Agricultural Science Vol.41 No.1

This study was carried out to evaluate the Salmonella cross contamination at retail chicken meat outlets in Kandy, Sri Lanka and to identify the risk factors for Salmonella contamination at retail chicken meat outlets. Fifteen retail chicken meat outlets in Kandy area were randomly selected. Pre-tested questionnaires were used to collect data for identifying risk factors of Salmonella cross contamination at retail outlets and swab samples from meat contact surfaces/utensils were obtained. Out of 57 swab samples collected from meat contact surfaces/utensils, the overall prevalence of Salmonella cross contamination was 21%. Weighing scale (33%), meat containing trays/buckets (27%) and cutting board (25%) showed the highest percentage of Salmonella prevalence whereas knife and showcase showed relatively low percentages, 14% and 9%, respectively. Retail chicken outlets with slaughtering facilities had a significantly higher prevalence of Salmonella cross contamination than those without slaughtering facilities. This higher rate of Salmonella cross contamination at retail chicken meat outlets could be attributed to lack of proper cold chains and minimal facilities, and poor level of hygiene in those outlets.

Hadith Corresponding Thoughts on the Ethical Interacting Behavior of Young Entrepreneurs in Indonesia

ALWI, Zulfahmi,PARMITASARI, Rika Dwi Ayu,SYARIATI, Alim,SIDIK, Roziah binti Korea Distribution Science Association 2021 The Journal of Asian Finance, Economics and Busine Vol.8 No.3

The youths are characterized by their reckless and ambitious behavior. They exhibit a strong tendency to make risky decisions that may jeopardize their future. These qualities are also in line with their experience-seeking behavior. As young entrepreneurs aim high in profit-seeking activities, their ethical stance may be compromised. Moreover, their money profile increases at an accelerated pace, leading them to love money even more. Quantitatively, this study was the first to investigate the behavior of young entrepreneurs in terms of their love of money, religiosity, and ethical perceptions by adopting the hadith perspective in Islamic tradition by developing the scales of all constructs. The respondents were 261 members of the Indonesian Young Entrepreneur Association in Sulawesi Selatan, Indonesia. This study also examined gender as the moderating variable. This study found that the love of money affects ethical perception negatively; on the other hand, religiosity positively affected ethics. Gender is found to moderate religiosity, but not love of money. These results signify the harmful impact of loving money too much on young entrepreneurs' ethics; furthermore, the scales developed from hadith revelation were able to capture the empirical findings significantly.

      • On A Safety of Sequential Control System Based on Gröbner Bases Computation

Saifulza Alwi,Yasutaka Fujimoto 제어로봇시스템학회 2010 제어로봇시스템학회 국제학술대회 논문집 Vol.2010 No.10

This paper provides an approach of safety verification of logic control system with application of Grobner bases method. We propose a method to analyze and design a safe control system using a safety fucntion. In this case, the safety is defined to represent a safety domain in the state space. Using a plant model and controller examples with appropriate predetermined safety function, we can evaluate whether the whole system is safe or not. Illustrative example shows that the proposed method is effective for verifying safety and designing safe control system.

      • Container Terminal Efficiency Measurement Using Data Envelopment Analysis: Pre-Pandemic Comparison of Colombo and Busan

Naleen De Alwis,Hyung-Sik Nam 한국항해항만학회 2023 한국항해항만학회 학술대회논문집 Vol.2023 No.1

Increasing port competition driven by the containerisation has motivated ports and terminals to focus on their performance to efficiently utilise the available resources and to make strategic decisions in port development and expansion. With both inter-port and intra-port competition increasing in the port of Colombo, this study aims to measure the efficiency of the container terminals in Colombo comparing to terminals in the port of Busan using the DEA window analysis to determine their operational efficiency and to provide suggestions for future port development activities. Multiple window analyses were conducted using CCR and BCC models with different orientations and window lengths to compare the efficiencies of 11 DMUs in both ports during the period from 2015-2019 to measure the efficiencies prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. Results revealed the largest terminal operator, PNC in Busan, to be the most efficient overall, while the second highest efficiency was recorded by one of the smallest terminal operators, SAGT in Colombo, among the sample. Although use of DEA in port performance measurement has been popular for many years, efficiency measurements in the port of Colombo, the main hub port in the South Asian region, has not been comprehensively studied so far.

Induced monoterpene and lignin production in mechanically stressed and fungal elicited cultured Cupressus lusitanica cells

        Ransika De Alwis,Koki Fujita,Tatsuya Ashitani,Ken’ichi Kuroda 한국식물생명공학회 2009 Plant biotechnology reports Vol.3 No.1

Cultured Cupressus lusitanica cells induced by various stresses are thought to produce different complexes of defense chemicals to optimize defense. To compare the induced products of two stimulations, we investigated the emission of monoterpenes, biosynthesis of b-thujaplicin, and accumulation of lignin in mechanically stressed and fungal elicited cultured C. lusitanica cells. Both mechanical stress and fungal elicitor caused emission of qualitatively similar monoterpene blends indicating de novo biosynthesis of these compounds after stimulation, while mechanical stress alone is sufficient to induce fungal elicitor-related monoterpene emission. Sabinene and limonene were the dominant compounds over the time course in both volatile blends. Although the emitted volatile blends were qualitatively similar, the time course and the relative ratios of the constituents of the volatile blends differed with the type of stimulation. While fungal elicited cells produced significant amounts of b-thujaplicin over the 5-day time course, no b-thujaplicin was observed in the mechanically stressed cells. The production of b-thujaplicin was the main dissimilarity of the induced products of these two treatments, suggesting that synthesis of b-thujaplicin is not a general response to all types of stresses, but is a specific response and serves as a strong toxic compound against already invaded fungus. Significantly higher amounts of lignin accumulations were observed in the fungal elicited and mechanically stressed cells on the 5th day after induction. Based on these results, we suggest the composition of induced products was dependent on the method of stimulation. Pre-pandemic comparison of container terminal efficiency in Colombo and Busan

        Naleen De Alwis,남형식 한국해운물류학회 2023 해운물류연구 Vol.39 No.2

Considering the highly competitive port environment driven by the containerization, this study aims to compare the efficiencies of the container terminal operators in the ports of Colombo and Busan prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, therefore, providing suggestions to achieve the operational efficiency and to plan future port development and expansion. PNC in Busan, with its largest scale of production, recorded the highest technical efficiency while SAGT in Colombo, among the smallest Decision-Making Units (DMUs), ranked second. The volatility observed in the technical efficiencies of the terminals indicated the dynamic nature of the industry where the new terminal operators gained significant efficiency growths with time. Port development activity in Colombo must prioritize expanding deep-draft terminals while Busan needs to focus on managing the surplus resources efficiently through corporation strategies. This study intends to address the research gap of efficiency measurements in the port of Colombo, the main container hub port in the South Asia.
