Screening of Indigenous Strains of Lactic Acid Bacteria for Development of a Probiotic for Poultry

        Karimi Torshizi, M.A.,Rahimi, Sh.,Mojgani, N.,Esmaeilkhanian, S.,Grimes, J.L. Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2008 Animal Bioscience Vol.21 No.10

In an attempt to develop a probiotic formulation for poultry feed, a number of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) were isolated from chicken intestinal specimens and a series of in vitro experiments were performed to evaluate their efficacy as a potential probiotic candidate. A total of 650 LAB strains were isolated and screened for their antagonistic potential against each other. Among all the isolates only three isolates (TMU121, 094 and 457) demonstrated a wide spectrum of inhibition and were thus selected for detailed investigations. All three selected isolates were able to inhibit the growth of E. coli and Salmonella species, although to variable extent. The nature of the inhibitory substance produced by the isolates TMU121 and 094 appeared to be associated with bacteriocin, as their activity was completely lost after treatment with proteolytic enzymes, while pH neutralization and catalase enzyme had no effect on the residual activity. In contrast, isolate TMU457 was able to resist the effect of proteolytic enzymes while pH neutralization completely destroyed its activity. Attempts were made to study the acid, bile tolerance and cell surface hydrophobicity of these isolates. TMU121 showed high bile salt tolerance (0.3%) and high cell surface hydrophobicity compared to the other two strains studied, while TMU094 appeared the most pH resistant strain. Based on these results, the three selected LAB isolates were considered as potential ingredients for a chicken probiotic feed formulation and were identified to species level based on their carbohydrate fermentation pattern by using API 50CH test kits. The three strains were identified as Lactobacillus fermentum TMU121, Lactobacillus rhamnosus TMU094, and Pediococcus pentosaceous TMU457.

A New Selective Membrane Electrode for Oxalate Based on N,N'-Bis(salicylidene)-2,2-dimethylpropane-1,3-diamine Ni(II)

        Ardakani, M.Mazloum,Iranpoor, F.,Karimi, M.A.,Salavati-Niasari, M. Korean Chemical Society 2008 Bulletin of the Korean Chemical Society Vol.29 No.2

A new solvent polymeric membrane electrode, based on N,N'-bis(salicylidene)-2,2-dimethylpropane-1,3-diamine Ni(II) as the ionophore, was designed. The oxalate-selective electrode has the dynamic range between 1.0 10-6 M and 1.0 10-1 M with a Nernstian slope of -28.7 1.0 mV per decade. The detection limit was 6.3 10-7 M. The proposed electrode revealed good selectivities for oxalate over a variety of other anions and could be used in a pH range of 2.0-7.8. The electrode can be used for at least two months without any considerable divergence in potential. The designed electrode was applied as an indicator electrode in the potentiometric determination of oxalate in real samples.

ANALYSIS AND OPTIMIZATION OF AIR SUSPENSION SYSTEM WITH INDEPENDENT HEIGHT AND STIFFNESS TUNING

        P. KARIMI ESKANDARY,A. KHAJEPOUR,A. WONG,M. ANSARI 한국자동차공학회 2016 International journal of automotive technology Vol.17 No.5

Suspensions play a crucial role in vehicle comfort and handling. Different types of suspensions have been proposed to address essential comfort and handling requirements of vehicles. The conventional air suspension systems use a single flexible rubber airbag to transfer the chassis load to the wheels. In this type of air suspensions, the chassis height can be controlled by further inflating the airbag; however, the suspension stiffness is not controllable, and it depends on the airbag volume and chassis load. A recent development in a new air suspension includes two air chambers (rubber airbags), allowing independent ride height and stiffness tuning. In this air suspension system, stiffness and ride height of the vehicle can be simultaneously altered for different driving conditions by controlling the air pressure in the two air chambers. This allows the vehicle’s natural frequency and height to be adjusted according to the load and road conditions. This article discusses optimization of an air suspension design with ride height and stiffness tuning. An analytical formulation is developed to yield the optimum design of the new air suspension system. Experimental results verify the mathematical modeling and show the advantages of the new air suspension system.

        S.A. Poursamara,M. Rabiee,A. Samadikuchaksaraei,M. Karimi,M. Azami,M. Tahriri 한양대학교 세라믹연구소 2009 Journal of Ceramic Processing Research Vol.10 No.5

Many investigators have reported the incorporation of PVA with HA via in situ formation of HA crystals in a PVA solution which leads to the formation of a biodegradable and biocompatible nanocomposite. However a detailed study of the effect of the value of the pH of the reactive solution on the synthesis of HA/PVA composites had not yet been made. Using extensive FTIR and XRD analyses, the aim of the present study is to investigate the affection of the value of the pH on the formation and interaction of organic and inorganic compartments of the composite. • Automatic detection of icing wind turbine using deep learning method

Hasan Basri Başağa,Hasan Basri Başağa,Selen Ayas,Mohammad Tordi Karimi 한국풍공학회 2022 Wind and Structures, An International Journal (WAS Vol.34 No.6

Detecting the icing on wind turbine blades built-in cold regions with conventional methods is always a very laborious, expensive and very difficult task. Regarding this issue, the use of smart systems has recently come to the agenda. It is quite possible to eliminate this issue by using the deep learning method, which is one of these methods. In this study, an application has been implemented that can detect icing on wind turbine blades images with visualization techniques based on deep learning using images. Pre-trained models of Resnet-50, VGG-16, VGG-19 and Inception-V3, which are well-known deep learning approaches, are used to classify objects automatically. Grad-CAM, Grad-CAM++, and Score-CAM visualization techniques were considered depending on the deep learning methods used to predict the location of icing regions on the wind turbine blades accurately. It was clearly shown that the best visualization technique for localization is Score-CAM. Finally, visualization performance analyses in various cases which are close-up and remote photos of a wind turbine, density of icing and light were carried out using Score-CAM for Resnet-50. As a result, it is understood that these methods can detect icing occurring on the wind turbine with acceptable high accuracy

Porosity changes during packed bed solid-state fermentation

        A. Karimi,S.A. Shojaosadati,P. Hejazi,E. Vasheghani-Farahani,M. Hashemi 한국공업화학회 2014 Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Vol.20 No.6

Porosity is one of the key parameters in a typical solid-state fermentationmodel that represents the intraand inter-particle void spaces in bioreactor bed. In this research, the particle density and moisturecontent of the bed were used to determine the porosity changes of the solid substrate bed during thefermentation of Aspergillus niger in a laboratory scale packed-bed bioreactor. Biomass growth was alsomonitored by means of measuring CO2 and O2 in the bioreactors outlet gas online. As such, anexperimental relationship between humidity and porosity has been developed and can be used in solidstatefermentation modeling.

Strategies for Renal Protection in Cardiovascular Interventions

        Ziad A. Ali,Javier Escaned,Dariusz Dudek,Jai Radhakrishnan,Keyvan Karimi Galougahi 대한심장학회 2022 Korean Circulation Journal Vol.52 No.7

Coronary artery disease is highly prevalent in chronic kidney disease (CKD) and is a risk factor for contrast-associated acute kidney injury (CA-AKI), a complication of cardiovascular procedures that require contrast administration (e.g., coronary angiography, percutaneous coronary intervention [PCI]). CA-AKI has a major impact on morbidity, mortality, and healthcare resource utilization. The incidence of CA-AKI is particularly high in patients with pre-existing CKD, advanced age and comorbidities that increase the likelihood of CKD. The focus of the present review is to provide a brief overview on the assessment of the risk for and prevention of CA-AKI in patients undergoing angiography and PCI, including recognition of the important patient- and procedure-related factors that may contribute to CA-AKI. Preventive and treatment strategies, the mainstay of which is volume repletion by normal saline, are briefly discussed. The main focus of the review is placed on technical details of contrast minimization techniques, including ultra-low contrast angiography and zero-contrast PCI. Operator competence in such techniques is important to ensure that procedural challenges in patients with CKD, like vessel calcification, multivessel disease and complex anatomical subsets, are effectively addressed by PCI while minimizing the risk of CA-AKI.
