Aims: We have examined and analyzed trends of acupuncture related patents to understand the status of acupuncture technology and research trends of acupuncture in major countries including Korea, the United States, European Union and Japan. Methods: To analyze the patents, we searched and analyzed the total of 1,048 on-line DB based patents under time limit of July, 2006. Results: According to the search results, Korea is mostly superior compared to the others in number of domestic patents, However, Korea patents is inferior in number of international patents and leave much to be desired in industrial applications because of low patents barrier of personal patents and the absence of prospective clients, In addition, in this study, we show an index of international competitiveness and preliminary data of necessity of international cooperation in a field of acupuncture researches, Conclusion: These data suggest that Korea has strong possibility to recover competitiveness for guaranteeing valuable patents, if there are international cooperation and intensive managements of industries in advanced country markets.

Objectives : To inform the 5th WHO Informal Consultation meeting on Development of International Standard Acupuncture Point Locations, held in Osaka, Japan, on September $27{\sim}29$, 2005. Results and Conclusions : Nine experts from Korea, China and Japan discussed the principles of acupuncture points locations and the point locations of 33 controversial acupoints that were not agreed at the previous meeting, as well as 328 non-controversial points that all 3 nations agreed on the locations to confirm the expression of every single point. Through this meeting, the locations of ST30, SP12, LR7 and expressions of LU6, LI8, LI9, LI10, LI 13, SP13, BL60, KI3, GB38, LR11, LR12 were agreed. Furthermore, locations of BL39, GB27, GB28 were confirmed out of 6 non-discussed points. However, several points were still required to held additional meeting to discuss. That includes LI19, LI20, ST36, ST37, ST38, ST39, SI6, KI9, PC8, PC9, TE9, TE17, TE23, GB7, GB30, GV26. In addition, foundation for the international society for the acupuncture point location was proposed to make a regular revision of standard acupuncture point location.

Although the usage of acupuncture for pain has increased in recent years, the mechanisms of acupuncture analgesia (AA) remain unclear. The lack of suitable experimental animal models for persistent pain, which show clear AA, has been the major stumbling block in the investigation of the physiological mechanisms of AA In the present study, we test AA in two knee arthritis models induced by injection of CF A or carrageenan as persistent pain models. After induction of arthritis, the rat subsequently showed a reduced stepping force of the affected limb for the next several days. Electroacupuncture (EA) was applied to an acupuncture point each on the contralateral forelimb for 30 minutes under gaseous anesthesia. After the termination of EA, behavioral tests measuring stepping force were periodically conducted during the next several hours. EA produced a significant improvement of stepping force of the foot lasting for at least 2 hours when applied to LR2 in CFA model, and applied to ST36 in carrageenan model, but both points did not produce any significant effects in each other model. Further experiments showed that intraperitoneal pretreatment of naltrexone, a non-selective opioid antagonist, did not reduced the EA-induced improvement of stepping force in both of two models. These data suggest that EA produce analgesic effect in knee arthritic pain and the analgesic effect is specific to the acupuncture point depending on painful conditions.

HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors (statins), as effective antilipidemic agents for lowering LDL-C concentrations, are commonly used in clinical practice to treat most of the major types of hyperlipidemia. The objectives of this study were to evaluate appropriateness of using lovastatin, pravastatin and simvastatin in Samsung Medical Center and to find out ways to improve further their use. A total of 154 outpatients on one of the statins were finally selected and their medical records were retrospectively reviewed. The criteria of DUE (Drug Use Evaluation), based on the standards by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists, were modified appropriately according to our hospital settings. Using of statins were justified appropriately in 80.5% of patients. However, dietary therapy which should be done before statins treatment was rarely performed. The complications with statin use included minor symptoms such as GI problems and headache, but any convincing causal relationship to drug use was not detected. It was found that there has been a lack of constructive monitoring on hyperlipidemic patients from the initiation of stain therapy, strongly suggesting that there is a necessity to establish a standard treatment protocol for providing better systematic pharmaceutical service by hospital pharmacists on the bass of this standard.
한국인의 YNZ22(D17S5)Variable Number Tandem Repeat(VNTR)좌위의 유전적 변이

The YNZ22 (D17S5) locus on chromosome 17p13.3 is well known as one of the most informative variable number of tandem repeat (VNTR) polymorphic regions identified so far in the human genome. In the present study, the allele frequencies and the genotype distribution of the YNZ22 (D17S5) VNTR locus were analyzed in subjects with 161 unrelated Koreans using the polymerase chain reaction. The analysis revealed 56 genotypes consisting of 15 alleles (differing in copy number of a 70-bp repeat unit) ranging in size from 170 to 1150 bp. The most frequent allele and genotype were observed to 4 and 1-4, respectively. The distribution of the genotypes was significantly deviated from the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium (X²=23.682, df=10, 0.005<P<0.01). The observed and expected heterozygosities were 91.9% and 87.7%, respectively. The power of discrimination (PD), power of exclusion (PE) and polymorphism information content (PIC) were 0.973, 0.759 and 0.865, respectively.

Mutations in the p53 tumor suppressor gene are frequently found in many different forms of human cancers, the majority of which are missense mutations which alter the DNA-binding property and transcriptional activity of the product. In the present study, three p53 restriction fragment length polymorphisms (BstUI RFLP in exon 4, MspI RFLP in intron 6 and TaqI RFLP in exon 6) were examined in 154 controlled studies and 57 patients with cervical cancer from the Korean population. The A1 allele frequencies of BstUI and MspI RFLPs in controlled studies were 0.395 and 0.029, respectively. The TaqI RFLP sites (codon 213 polymorphism) were, however, monomorphic in the Korean population. The genotype distributions of BstUI and MspI polymorphic sites between control and patient groups well agreed upon with the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium (BstUI RFLP: χ²=1.468, p=0.480; MspI RFLP: χ²=0.209, p=0.647), which suggested that three RFLPs have no relevance to the susceptibility of cervical cancer development. This study showed that the allele frequencies of BstUI and MspI RFLPs in Korean populations are significantly different from other ethnic populations. Thus, it seems that the p53 polymorphisms are useful for the studies of human population genetics and anthropology.
