Seawater desalination plant using reverse osmosis (RO) can be installed on ships moving between islands to mitigate the water scarcity. This implies that the RO system should produce filtrated water variably or intermittently depending on how much fresh water is available. The main problem of seawater desalination facilities using membrane is the scaling. The intermittent operation of the RO precess can leads to deposition of scale. The objective of this study is to investigate the effect of intermittent operation on the membrane performance and crystallization of calcium sulfate in RO system. Lab-scale process shuts down intermittently for a total of 24 hours of filtration. The membrane flux was compared according to the shut down time. The experimental results show that as the shut down time increased, the flux reduction rate tended to decrease. Membrane autopsy using scanning electron microscopy showed the effect of pressure relaxation on the scale formation of membrane surface. These experimental results will help inform the advantage of intermittent RO systems for island areas.
