We provide evidence that current CDS slope negatively predicts future stock returns over several months in the Korean market. The entire sample period covers January 2003 through June 2009. The empirical results are as follows. First, when constructing quartile portfolios based on the slope of CDS spreads, we find that predictive power of CDS slope lasts for seven months. In addition, the lower the CDS slope is, the higher average stock return is. Specifically, a slope-based strategy of buying the lowest slope and selling the highest slope makes profits over 2% each month. The profitability is statistically and economically significant even after controlling for some risk factors. We also find that the results are robust to various sub-samples, portfolio-weighting schemes, as well as the number of sorted portfolios. This abnormal return cannot be explained by standard risk factors, default risk. and expectation hypothesis.

In this paper, a design program for electric railway pole foundation was developed by applying the estimation study performed by Korean Railway. There are two kinds of shapes in the cross-section of electric railway pole foundation: rectangle and circle. In foundation designing, The rectangular foundation should be satisfied with vertical, horizontal and moment equilibrium equations. On the other hand, the circular foundation should be satisfied with horizontal and moment equilibrium equations. The design program was coded into MFC(Microsoft Foundation Class) by MS Visual C. The equation's roots in the program were obtained by Incremental Search method. Dialog and property sheet(Wizard Mode) input windows were selected for user-friendliness. The biggest advantage of this program is to find an optimum depth in a given section.

This study investigates the determinants of the term structure of Credit Default Swap (CDS) spreads in the Korean market. Contrary to the prediction of structural models, we find no evidence that firm-specific variables, such as leverage ratio and asset volatility, play a role in determining the shape of the CDS term structure. Instead, we find evidence that market-wide variables such as the risk-free rate, term premium, and yield on AAA bonds are important determinants. Interestingly, the slope of the CDS term structure predicts future changes in CDS spreads even after controlling for the determinants of CDS spreads based on structural models. Our findings suggest that structural models cannot fully explain the shape of the term structure. In addition, some potential factors, which are incorporated in CDS slope and predict future CDS spreads, should be considered in modelling credit risk derivatives to explain the CDS term structure.
