N/A Objective: To determine the efficacy of ACE inhibitor on reducing the interdialytic HW gain of patients on maintenance hemodialysis. Methods: A randomized, double blind, placebo controlled crossover study, consisting of one 4-week baseline period and two 4-week treatment periods, which were interposed by a 2-week washout period, was conducted on 21 non-diabetic ESI4D patients on hemodialysis. During the treatment periods, patients were given either fosinopril 10 mg/day or a placebo. Interdialytic BW gain was recorded during the study period and BUN, plasma Na, osmolarity and the agiotensin II level were measured at the end of the baseline and treatment periods. Results: Eight patients were excluded from the study due to incompliance to medication and 13 patients remained in the study. During the baseline period, no correlation was found between interdialytic weight gain and BUN, Na, osmolarity and angiotens in II. There was no difference in the interdialytic weight. increment between the fosinopril-treated (1.0±0.1kg/day, mean±SE) and placebo-treated period (1.0±0.1), The weight increment in both periods was significantly less than that in the baseline period (1.2±0.2), suggesting a psychological influence of both medications on thirst. However, in 8 patients who gained 1.0 kg/day or more during the baseline period, the interdialytic HW increment in fosinopril-treated period (1.3±0.1) was significantly less than that in the placebo period (1.4±0.1, p<0.05 by paired t test). Of these patients, 6 patients gained less and 2 patients showed no difference in the fosinopril period compared with the placebo period. Conclusion: ACE inhibitor may reduce interdialytic BW gain in hemodialysis patients with moderate to high interdialytic weight increment.

Si₃N₄/SiC composite ceramics was sintered in order to investigate their bending strength behavior after crack healing, Y₂O₃ and TiO₂ power was added as sintering additives to enhance it's sintering property. A three-point bending specimen was cut out from sintered plates. About 100 ㎛ semi-circular surface cracks were made on the center of the tension surface of the three-point bending specimen using Vickers indenter. After the crack-healing processing from 700 ℃ to 1300 ℃, for 1 h, in air, the bending strength behavior of these crack-healed specimen coated with SiO2₂ gel solution were determined systematically at room temperature. Si₃N₄/SiC ceramics using added powder (Y₂O₃+TiO₂) was superior to that of added powder Y₂O₃. The added powder TiO₂ exerted influence at growth of Si₃N₄. The optimum crack healing conditions coated with SiO2₂ colloidal were 1000 ℃ at Si₃N₄ using added powder (Y₂O₃+TiO₂), and 1300 ℃ at Si₃N₄ using added powder Y₂O₃.

The essential tremor is an involuntary oscillatory movement of body parts. Conventional treatments of essential tremor have little effects in some patients and also leads to significant side effects. Alternative to these treatments, sensory stimulation may have beneficial effects on the essential tremor. The purpose of this study was to analyze an effect of sensory stimulation on essential tremor. Ten patients with essential tremor ($67.4{\pm}8.82$ yrs, 5 men and 5 women) participated in this study. Three-axis gyro sensors were attached on index finger, hand and forearm of patients. Task of 'arms outstretched forward' was performed with and without sensory stimulation. Vectorsum of three dimensional angular velocities (pitch, roll, yaw) was calculated. Outcome measures included root-meansquare (RMS) mean of the vector-sum amplitude, total power, peak power and peak frequency. RMS amplitude, total power and peak power were reduced by sensory stimulation (p < 0.05). Peak frequency was not affected by sensory stimulation. The results indicate that the sensory stimulation is useful to suppress the essential tremor.
