This paper studies the problem of determining the optimal standard product sizes minimizing the loss function, which is composed of demand distribution and preference functions. The customer who wants to buy the product of size x in the range x_(i-x)<x<x_i may purchase the product of size u_i. Size u_i represents the standard product size which covers the interval (x_(i-1), x_i). Purchasing desire decreases as the difference between a customer's requirement(x) and the standard product size(u_i) increases. The standard product sizes u_i and the range limits x_i can be determined so as to minimize the loss function.
동해로 유입되는 가곡천과 마읍천에 서식하는 담수어의 지리적 분포

1999년 4월부터 2000년 10월까지 강원도 삼척시에 위치한 가곡천과 마읍천에서 어류의 지리적분포와 군집구조를 조사하였다. 가곡천에서는 10과 20종, 마읍천에서는 10과 25종의 어류가 확인되었으며, 이 가운데 한국 고유종은 Squalidus multimaculatus, Iksookimia koreensis 그리고 Liobagrus mediadiposalis의 3종이었다. 가곡천의 미기록종은 S. multimaculatus, I. koreensis, Pungitius sinensis sinensis 그리고 Oncorhynchus masou masou이었으며, Zacco platypus와 Z. temmincki가 우점종이었다. 가곡천 상류역에서는 Z. temmincki와 Moroco oxycephalus가 우점종이었으며, 중류역에서는 Z. platypus, 하류역에서는 Cottus Hngiongensis, Chaenogobius urotaenia 그리고 Rhinogobius brunneus가 우점종이었다. 마읍천의 미기록종은 Cyprinus carpio, Pseudorasbora parva, Silurus asotus, O. m. masou, M. oxycephalus, Gasterosteus aculeatus, P. s. sinensis, C. castaneus, Acanthogobius lactipes, Tridentiger brevispines이었으며, Z. platypus가 우점종이었다. 마읍천 상류역에서는 Z. platypus가 우점종이었으며, 중류역에서는 Ladislavia taczanowskii, 하류역에서는 P. s. sinensis가 우점종이었다. 본 조사에서 확인된 어류 가운데, 특히 가곡천에 서식하는 S. multimaculatus와 마곡천에 서식하는 L. taczanowskii와 Nemacheilus toni는 지리분포상 보호되어야하겠다. 가곡천의 종다양성지수는 1.109, 마읍천의 종다양성지수는 1.109로서 종다양성이 높고 군집이 안정되어 있었다. The geographical distribution and community structure of freshwater fishes in the Gagog and Maeup Streams, which flow into the East Sea, were surveyed from April 1999 to October 2000. Twenty species belonging to 10 families were collected in Gagog Stream. Twenty-five species belonging to 10 families were collected in Maeup Stream, including the Korean endemic species Squalidus multimaculatus, Iksookimia koreensis and Liobagrus mediadiposalis. In the Gagog Stream, S. multimaculatus, I. koreensis, Pungitius sinensis sinensis and Oncorhynchus masou masou were newly recorded. The dominant species were Zacco platypus and Z. temmincki. A tendency was seen in regional distribution such that Z. temmincki and Moroco oxycephalus dominated in the upper stream, Z. platypus in the middle stream, and Cottus hangiongensis, Chaenogobius urotaenia and Rhinogobius brunneus in the lower stream. Newly recorded from the Maeup Stream are Cyprinus carpio, Pseudorasbora parva, Silurus asotus, O.m.masou, M. oxycephalus, Gasterosteus aculeatus, P. s. sinensis, C. castaneus, Acanthogobius lactipes and Tridentiger brevispinis. The dominant species was Z. platypus. A tendency was seen in regional distribution such that Z. platypus dominated in the upper stream, Ladislavia taczanowskii in the midddle stream, and P. s. sinensis in the lower stream. Among the noteworthy fishes found in the present study were S. multimaculatus in the Gagog Stream and L. taczanowskii and Nemacheilus toni in the Maeup Stream, These species are considered as species of conservation concern. The species diversity index of the communities were 1.109 in the Gagog Stream and 1.166 in the Maeup Stream. The results indicate that the community structure in each stream is very diverse but stable in its species composition.

We deposited TiAgN and ZrAgN nanocomposite coatings on pure Titanium specimens, by using arc ion plating (AIP) with single alloy targets. TiAg ZrAg alloy targets of 5 wt.%, 10 wt.% silver content by vacuum arc remelting (VAR), followed by homogenization for 2 hours at $1,100^{\circ}C$ in non-active Ar gas atmosphere and characterized these samples for morphology and chemical composition. We investigated the biocompatibility of TiAg and ZrAg alloys by examining the proliferation of L929 fibroblast cells by MTT test assay, after culturing the cells ($4{\times}10^4cells/cm^2$) for 24 hours; and exploring the antibacterial properties of thin films by culturing Streptococus Mutans (KCTC3065), using paper disk techniques. Our results showed no cytotoxic effects in any of the specimens, but the antibacterial effects against Streptococus Mutans appeared only in the 10 wt.% silver content specimens.

The objective of this paper is to look into the growth of Cryptomeria japonica stand in South Korea along with the evaluation on their yields, followed by their carbon stocks and removals. A total of 106 sample plots were selected from Jeonnam, Gyeongnam, and Jeju, where the groups of standard are grown. We only used 92 plots data except outlier. As part of the analysis, the Weibull diameter distribution was applied. In order to estimate the diameter distribution, the growth estimation equation for each of the growth factors including the height, the diameter at breast height, and the basal area was drafted out and the verification for each equation was examined. The site index for figuring out the forest productivity of Cryptomeria japonica stand for each district was also developed as a Schumacher model and 30yr was used as a reference age for the estimation of the site index. It was found that the site index for Cryptomeria japonica stand in South Korea ranges from 10 to 16 and this result was used as a standard for developing the stand yield table. According to the site 14 in the stand yield table, the mean annual increment (MAI) of the Cryptomeria japonica reaches 7.6 m3/ha on its 25yr and its growing stock is estimated to be at 190.1 m3/ha. This volume is about 20 m3 as high as that of the Chamaesyparis obtusa. Furthermore, the annual carbon absorptions for a Cryptomeria japonica stand reached the peak at 25yr, which is 2.14 tC/ha/yr, 7.83 tCO2/ha/yr. When compared to the other conifers, this rate is slightly higher than that of a Chamaecyparis obtusa (7.5 tCO2/ha/yr) but lower than that of the Pinus koraiensis (10.4 tCO2/ha/yr) and Larix kaempferi (11.2 tCO2/ha/yr). With such research result as a base, it is necessary to come up with the ways to enhance the utilization of Cryptomeria japonica as timbers, besides making use of their growth data.

Acupuncture inhibits microglial activation and inflammatory events in the MPTP-induced mouse model

Using a mouse model of 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP)-induced Parkinson's disease (PD), this study investigated on the neuroprotective effects of acupuncture by examining whether acupuncture contributed to inhibiting microglial activation and inflammatory events. CS7BL/6 mice were treated with MPTP (30 mg/kg. i.p.) for 5 consecutive days. Acupuncture was then applied to acupoints Yanglingquan (GB34) and Taichong (LR3) starting 2h after the first MPTP administration and then at 48 h intervals until the mice were sacriSced for analyses at 1, 3, and 7 days after the last MPTP injection. These expehments demonstrated that acupuncture inhibited the decreased ofthe tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) immunoreactivity (IR) and generated a neuroprotective effects in the striatum (ST) and the substantia nigra (SN) on days 1, 3, and 7 post-MPTP injections. Acupuncture attenuated the increase ofmacrophage antigen complcx-1 (MAC-1), a marker of microglial activation, at 1 and 3 days and reduced the increases in cyc1ooxygenase-2 (C0X-2) and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) expression on days 1, 3, and 7. In MPTP group, striatal dopamine (DA) was measured by 46% at 7 days, whereas DA in the acupuncture group was 78%. On the basis of these results, we suggest that acupuncture could be used as a neuroprotective intervention for the purpose of inhibiting microglial activation and inflammatory events in PD.
