Identification of New Isolates of Phytophthora sojae and the Reactions of Korean Soybean Cultivars Following Hypocotyl Inoculation

Kang, In Jeong,Kang, Sunjoo,Jang, Ik Hyun,Jang, Yun Woo,Shim, Hyung Kwon,Heu, Sunggi,Lee, Sungwoo The Korean Society of Plant Pathology 2019 Plant Pathology Journal Vol.35 No.6

Phytophthora root and stem rot (PRSR) caused by Phytophthora sojae is one of the most destructive diseases of soybean. PRSR recently became an issue as soybean cultivation in paddy fields increased in South Korea. The management of PRSR mainly involves R-gene-mediated resistance, however, little is known about the resistance in Korean cultivars. Major Korean soybean cultivars were investigated for the presence or absence of R-gene-mediated resistance to four P. sojae isolates, two of which were new isolates. Isolate-specific reactions were observed following P. sojae inoculation. Of 21 cultivars, 15-20 cultivars (71.4-95.2%) showed susceptible reaction for each isolate. Ten cultivars were susceptible to all the isolates, and six cultivars were identified to have R-gene-mediated resistance to one or two isolates. The results of this study would provide a framework for the discovery of resistant cultivars, development of new cultivars resistant to P. sojae, and investigation of pathogenic diversity of P. sojae population in South Korea.

Relationships between the Use of ESL Learning Strategies and English Language Proficiency of Asian Students

kang, Sungwoo 한국영어어문교육학회 1999 영어어문교육 Vol.5 No.-

The objective of the present study was to model the relationships between language learning strategy use and language proficiency among the Asian (Korean, Japanese, and Taiwanese) students studying English in the United States. The instruments were a language learning strategy questionnaire and the Institutional Testing Program Test of English as a Foreign Language (ITP TOEFL). Structural equation modeling was utilized to model the relationships between language learning strategies and language proficiency. The present study found only weak relationships between language learning strategies and language proficiency. Only 13% and 15% of variance of the listening and grammar/reading factor were explained by the language learning strategies. The metacognitive strategies appeared not to have direct relationships to the language skill factors. as was found in other studies (Purpura, 1996, 1997). The effects of the social and affective strategies were very small. They in combination could account about 1% and 4% of the variance of the listening and grammar/reading factors.

      • Mechanically reconfigurable architectured graphene for tunable plasmonic resonances

        Kang, Pilgyu,Kim, Kyoung-Ho,Park, Hong-Gyu,Nam, SungWoo Nature Publishing Group UK 2018 Light, science & applications Vol.7 No.1

        <▼1>
Graphene nanostructures with complex geometries have been widely explored for plasmonic applications, as their plasmonic resonances exhibit high spatial confinement and gate tunability. However, edge effects in graphene and the narrow range over which plasmonic resonances can be tuned have limited the use of graphene in optical and optoelectronic applications. Here we present a novel approach to achieve mechanically reconfigurable and strongly resonant plasmonic structures based on crumpled graphene. Our calculations show that mechanical reconfiguration of crumpled graphene structures enables broad spectral tunability for plasmonic resonances from mid- to near-infrared, acting as a new tuning knob combined with conventional electrostatic gating. Furthermore, a continuous sheet of crumpled graphene shows strong confinement of plasmons, with a high near-field intensity enhancement of ~1 × 104. Finally, decay rates for a dipole emitter are significantly enhanced in the proximity of finite-area biaxially crumpled graphene flakes. Our findings indicate that crumpled graphene provides a platform to engineer graphene-based plasmonics through broadband manipulation of strong plasmonic resonances.
</▼1><▼2>
Plasmonics: Exploiting the properties of crumpled graphene

An innovative approach for making tunable plasmonic nanoparticles using crumpled graphene opens the door to new optical and optoelectronic devices. Graphene is a promising plasmonic material due to its low optical loss, high spatial confinement, and tunable plasmonic resonances. However, its structural patterns fix the resonance wavelengths, making broadband tunability across near- to mid-infrared wavelengths very challenging, limiting its range of applications. This led Pilgyu Kang from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in America, in collaboration with fellow American and South Korean colleagues, to turn to crumpled graphene, a form of graphene with unique optical and physical properties. By modelling the plasmonic resonances of crumpled graphene, the researchers demonstrated mechanically reconfigurable structures that enable a much broader range of spectral tunability, leading to new applications from optical sensors to photovoltaic devices.
</▼2>

“Same Bed, Different Dreams” : The Dynamics of Competition and Cooperation in Constructing the Seoul-Pusan Railway

Sungwoo KANG 계명대학교 한국학연구원 2021 Acta Koreana Vol.24 No.2

This paper examines the dynamics of competition and cooperation between Korea and Japan in constructing the Seoul-Pusan railway during the late 19th century. Korea and Japan had quite different motivations in the construction of the railway with each trying to secure its own agenda and interests on the Korean Peninsula. For the Korean government, the construction was perceived as a critical modernization project and an important symbol of advancement. For the Japanese government, the Seoul-Pusan railway was an important bridgehead to expand Japanese influence on the Asian continent. Initially, the Korean government, wary of the Japanese, hoped to grant concessions to almost anyone but the Japanese. Although the Korean government finally agreed to grant the Seoul-Pusan railway concession to a Japanese syndicate, it retained the right to buy back the railway company. Although in the end, the railway served Japanese colonial interests in attaining and maintaining control over Korea and beyond, the processes that characterized the construction of the railway reveal the deeply complex and paradoxical nature of colonial modernity by showing that the colonized can still retain considerable agency.

Comparison of Shoulder Neuromuscular Control in Overhead Athletes with and without Shoulder Hypermobility

        ( Sungwoo Kang ),( Kwanglae Kim ) 한국운동생리학회(구 한국운동과학회) 2020 운동과학 Vol.29 No.3

PURPOSE: A wider range of motion of shoulder joint is necessary for explosive throwing performance and the increase of the range of motion by repetitive throwing is inevitable. The wide range of motion is related with the instability of the joint. Neuromuscular control plays an essential role in stabilizing the joint. However, when the joint becomes hypermobile, how neuromuscular control was affected was not clear. The purpose of this study was to compare shoulder neuromuscular control of overhead shoulder athletes and identify the influence of hypermobility on it. METHODS: Total 24 subjects (hypermobility group (HMG); 12 athletes, normal range group (CON); 12 athletes) were recruited in this research. To assess shoulder neuromuscular functions, joint position sense (JPS), the threshold of detection to passive motion (TTDPM), and force reproduction (FR) were measured. RESULTS: In active JPS at HMG was greater than CON at the 90% target angle, (p<.05). In passive JPS, HMG showed lower JPS compared to CON at the 50% target angle (p<.05). In FR, HMG was lower than CON in internal rotation (p<.05). In relationship test, hypermobility was negatively correlated with active JPS (p<.05). CONCLUSIONS: It was found that the hypermobile shoulder has greater neuromuscular control compared normal range shoulder to compensate for the hypermobility and active sub-system plays a crucial role in the neuromuscular control of the shoulder joint. Thus, it is recommended that neuromuscular training should be considered in training program for overhead athletes with hypermobile shoulder.

Performance comparison of parallel ILU preconditioners for the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations

        Sungwoo Kang,Long Cu Ngo,Hyoung Gwon Choi,Wanjin Chung,Yo-Han Yoo,JungYulYoo 대한기계학회 2020 JOURNAL OF MECHANICAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Vol.34 No.3

In this paper, the performances of various ILU type parallel preconditioners for the finite element discretization of the incompressible Naiver-Stokes equations have been investigated. The solution algorithm of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equation is based on a fractional 4-step method combined with P1P1 finite element and the parallel preconditioners have been implemented by using the domain decomposition method and MPI library. The performances have been measured for momentum and pressure equation, respectively. The speedup of the pressure equation is found to be less than that of the momentum equation because the pressure equation requires a larger communication overhead by a larger iteration numbers of an iterative solver while element-matrix generation and assemble process is nearly scalable for both equations. The performance of the parallel preconditioners are dependent on time-step size, the Reynolds number and the number of the domains. Although BIWO (block ILU without overlapping) works well both for momentum and pressure equation, MDLU (modified distributed ILU(0)) is recommended for an ill-conditioned matrix or a large number of subdomains. Further, we have conducted the time complexity and spectral analysis of the preconditioned matrices to analyze the performance of the preconditioners.
