Limestone bodies under the tectonic environment have experienced various tectonic processes, and also changed the stress state. In this study, calcite twins found in limestones of the Joseon Supergroup and Pyeongan Supergroup in the northeastern part of the Ogcheon Belt, South Korea were measured, then the paleostress (i.e., the maximum shortening axis) was reconstructed using the new calcite strain gauge (NCSG) technique. The average twin thickness and average twin intensity increase as the total twin strain increases. We utilize the appearance of twins, the average twin thickness and average twin intensity, and the total twin strain to estimate that the observed calcite twins were produced at temperatures of < 200oC in the Joseon Supergroup and 170oC in the Pyeongan Supergroup. In the Joseon Supergroup, the dominant direction of the maximum shortening axis WNW-ESE to NW-SE; NE-SW shortening is also observed. The maximum shortening axes in the Pyeongan Supergroup are oriented NW-SE and NE-SW. The NE-SW direction of maximum shortening is associated with the occurrence of the Songrim orogeny of the Paleozoic to Early Jurassic, and the NW-SE direction of maximum shortening correlates to the Daebo orogeny of the Early Jurassic to Late Jurassic. It is thus concluded that the paleostress across the study area changed from NE-SW to NW-SE during the Mesozoic.

Background: The purpose of this article was to present a valid and reliable theoretical framework and method for the development of an integrated medical service model for the four major diseases. Methods: Methodologies for each process were presented based on three theoretical frameworks. The three theories were the double diamond process model, the Donabedian model, and the International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health model. Based on this, in the process of problem finding, a literature review, service user questionnaire, and interview methods were applied. For problem definition and solution, expert focus group interview and expert Delphi methods were applied. The subjects of the study were mainly selected from experts for each disease and users of medical services. For literature review, systematic literature review and subject range literature review were conducted, and for analysis, a meta-analysis was carried out. In the case of focus group interview and Delphi, the validity and reliability of domain derivation and sub-items were analyzed by applying the qualitative analysis method. Results: To develop an integrative medical service model, a theoretical framework and a systematic methodology were needed, and case studies were performed to prove its validity and reliability. This showed that the development of a medical service model needs to follow a scientific procedure. Conclusions: By introducing methodological approaches and procedures for the development of an integrated medical service model for the four major diseases, the researchers provided basic information on model development.

Ethnopharmacological Relevance

In this study, we investigated the effects of Tribulus terrestris fruit (Leguminosae, Tribuli Fructus, TF) extract on oxazolone-induced atopic dermatitis in mice.

Materials and Methods

TF extract was prepared with 30% ethanol as solvent. The 1% TF extract with or without 0.1% HC was applied to the back skin daily for 24 days.

Results

1% TF extract with 0.1% HC improved AD symptoms and reduced TEWL and symptom scores in AD mice. 1% TF extract with 0.1% HC inhibited skin inflammation through decrease in inflammatory cells infiltration as well as inhibition of Orai-1 expression in skin tissues. TF extract inhibited Orai-1 activity in Orai-1-STIM1 cooverexpressing HEK293T cells but increased TRPV3 activity in TRPV3-overexpressing HEK293T cells. TF extract decreased β-hexosaminidase release in RBL-2H3 cells.

Conclusions

The present study demonstrates that the topical application of TF extract improves skin inflammation in AD mice, and the mechanism for this effect appears to be related to the modulation of calcium channels and mast cell activation. This outcome suggests that the combination of TF and steroids could be a more effective and safe approach for AD treatment.

Chinese cabbage was cultivated in upland soil with the addition of biochar in order to investigate the potential for reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. Barley straw biochar (BSB) was introduced in a Wagner pot (1/5000a) in amounts of 0 (BSB0, control), 100 (BSB100), 300 (BSB300), and 500 (BSB500) kg 10a(-1). After the addition of BSB into the upland soil, carbon dioxide (CO2) emission increased while methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions decreased. The highest CO2 flux was measured for the BSB500 sample, (84.6 g m(-2)) followed by BSB300, BSB100, and BSB0 in decreasing order. Relative to those of control, the total CH4 flux and N2O flux for the BSB500 treatment were lower by 31.6% and 26.1%, respectively. The global warming potential (GWP) of the treatment without biochar was 281.4 g CO2 m(-2) and those for treatments with biochar were in the range from 194.1 to 224.9 g CO2 m(-2). Therefore, introducing BSB into upland soil to cultivate Chinese cabbages can reduce the global warming potential.

Background: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) has a negative impact on growth and development in children and is a risk factor for neurocognitive impairment; however, there is limited research on the cognitive function of children and adolescents with CKD. This study therefore aimed to investigate the mean intelligence and risk factors for low intelligence in children and adolescents with CKD. Methods: Eighty-one patients with CKD under 18 years old were included in the KoreaN cohort study for Outcomes in patients With Pediatric Chronic Kidney Disease (KNOW-Ped CKD). Participants completed either the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (6–16 years), or Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (> 16 years). Results: The mean full-scale intelligence quotient (IQ) was 91 ± 19; 24.7% of participants scored a full-scale IQ below 80. Participants with a short stature (height Z scores < −1.88), failure to thrive (weight Z scores < −1.65), more severe CKD stage (≥ IIIb), longer duration of CKD (≥ 5 years), and those who were Medicare or Medicaid beneficiaries, had significantly lower mean full-scale IQs. Conclusion: On linear regression analysis, the association between the full-scale IQ, and longer duration of CKD and growth failure, remained significant after controlling for demographic and clinical variables. It is therefore necessary to investigate cognitive impairment in pediatric patients with CKD who exhibit growth failure or for a longer postmorbid period. It is believed that early interventions, such as kidney transplantation, will have a positive effect on IQ in children with CKD, as the disease negatively affects IQ due to poor glomerular filtration rate over time.

Background: Renin, in addition to its activation of the reninangiotensin system, binds to the (pro)renin receptor (PRR) and triggers inflammatory and fibrogenic signaling in tissue. In addition, aliskiren, a direct renin inhibitor, has been shown to affect IgG metabolism by altering PRR and neonatal Fc receptors (FcRns). Methods: We investigated the effect of aliskiren on proteinuria, glomerular extracellular matrix, expressions of fibronectin, transforming growth factor beta 1 (TGF-beta 1), PRR, FcRn and renal metabolism of IgG in a mice model of anti-glomerular basement membrane glomerulonephritis (anti-GBM GN). Results: IgG deposition and expressions of FcRn and PRR were enhanced at glomeruli and urinary IgG levels increased in anti-GBM GN. Aliskiren attenuated anti-GBM GN with reduction of proteinuria and cortical expressions of fibronectin and TGF-beta 1. In addition, aliskiren suppressed the renal cortical expressions of FcRn and PRR. Aliskiren also reduced the glomerular IgG depositions and the urinary IgG levels albeit with increased circulating serum IgG levels. Conclusion: These results suggest that suppression of FcRn and PRR and regulation of IgG metabolism may be related to the attenuation of anti-GBM GN by aliskiren. (C) 2016 S. Karger AG, Basel

The purpose of this study was to analyze the relationship of the floor classification and the main-living behavior, and the tendency of using furniture and space by surveying the situations of using An-bang space by apartment dwellers. An-bang is a factor that influences on the unit-plan organization, the whole spatial arrangements, and the spatial relation and size, and has the most severe friction between the tradition and western culture. Given seeing the results shown in the main-living behavior by floor type, that the rest and TV watching were shown to be high in terms of a free-standing type can be said that An-bang is more for the individual rest than far the purpose of family harmony. On the other hand, that the family courtesy was shown to be a little higher a sitting-down type, could be understood that the sitting-down style, which is a traditional living mode, is appearing in An-bang.
