        Dr. Hyung-nong Park(1897-1978) is the greatest apologist and theologian of Korea. He was one of the foremost leaders in the succession of missionaries’ faith and theology to the Korean Church. He wrote many articles defending historic Christianity and Christian faith and wanted to inherit the faith that the missionaries had introduced to Korea while serving as a professor at The Presbyterian Theological Seminary, Pyongyang, Korea, from 1928 to 1938, when the Seminary was closed. The purpose of this paper is to examine Dr. Hyung-nong Park’s writings from 1928 to 1960. Among them, his writings in the Shinhak Jinam from 1928 to 1940, his writings in the Shinhak Chungron from 1949 to 1953, and his writings in the Shinhak Jinam from 1954 to 1958 will be reviewed. It was his conviction that the Bible was the inspired and inerrant Word of God, the only infallible rule of faith and practice. His criticism of various modern thoughts including liberal and neo-orthodox theology was intended to defend the plenary-verbal-organic inspiration and the infallibility of the Bible. Dr. Park defended the orthodox theology against various liberal and neo-orthodox theology and WCC ecumenical movement throughout his life. The theology he defended was ‘orthodox theology,’ ‘evangelical faith,’ and Calvinism. Dr. Park hoped to rebuild the seminary that inherited the theological tradition of the Pyongyang Seminary after returning to Korea in 1947 after 10 years of exile. He made great efforts to implement this theological tradition. It was why he published The Shinhak Chungron in 1949 and republished The Shinhak Jinam in 1954. Just as Philip Melanchthon(1497-1560) gave John Calvin(1509-1564) the title ‘The Theologian,’ it would be a good match for Dr. Park. He deserves such honors.

        Year 2016 marks the 150th year of missionary Robert J. Thomas’s martyrdom. For a long time, the Korean church inherited his faith and tradition in recognition of his martyrdom. At the dawn of 1980 however, Lee Man-Yeol vigorously challenged his martyrdom, which was followed by Han Kyu-Moo’s analogous publications in 1995 and 2005. Recently, in 2016, Ock Seung-Deuk and Han Kyu-Moo opined that Thomas’s death was not martyrdom. They questioned the legitimacy of his actions by criticizing Thomas’s embarkation through the General Sherman, a heavily armed colonial ship that illegally assailed into Korea. Even if Oh Moon-Hwan’s records of the last moments of missionary Thomas were true, Han Kyu-Moo would not decipher Thomas’s death as an act of martyrdom. Furthermore, he rejected missionary Appenzeller’s martyrdom, who died in shipwreck on his way to attend the Bible Translators committee meeting in Mokpo. Among the primary sources perused for this work, various Korean documents, including The Veritable Records of King Kojong (Annals of King Gojong) and Oh Moon- Hwan’s excerpt, The General Sherman and the Last Moments of Missionary Thomas, which is found in The Biography of Reverend Thomas were more predominantly compared and studied. The review of other relative materials found The Annals of King Gojong with substantial problematic errors while affirming that The General Sherman and the Last Moments of Missionary Thomas, in The Biography of Reverend Thomas to correspond to the testimonies and various other Korean sources. If Thomas made his arrival to Korea in order that he may share the gospel as a missionary and died while sharing the gospel, moments before his death, then he should be considered a martyr. Additionally, since many came to believe in Jesus through his Bibles, gospel spread through the churches built upon their faiths and legalized missionary entrances creating suitable environment for the gospel, these fruits are ample evidence for us to recon him as a martyr.

        이수정의 배도설, 역사적 재평가

        Rijutei[Sujeong Lee] was one of the greatest contributors to the pioneering missions in Korea. He went overseas to Japan as part of Young-hyo Park’s entourage in September 1882 and converted to Christianity through a Japanese agriculturist named, Tzdasen. Since his conversion, he made various achievements such as translation of the Bible, personal confession, the Lord’s Prayer and including a letter of urgency, “Rijutei to the Christians of America, Greeting,” sent to the America that expedited the Korea missions. All his works became a crucial cornerstone for missions in Korea, during its early stages. The conspiracy over the apostasy of Rijutei began through Dr. Lark-June Paik’s accusation in The History of the Protestant Missions in Korean 1832-1910, based on his reference to Ellen C. Parsons’s book. Fifteen Years in the Korean Mission. However, 125upon my discovery of the particular book of reference at the library of Yale University, I discovered that the contents in Ellen C. Parsons’ book do not in any way infer nor do they support Lark-June Paik’s claim against Rijute’s apostasy. Just to be sure, I carefully reexamined Ellen C. Parsons’s book and other relative documents, only to refute the conspiracy Paik had started. In conclusion, Lark-June Paik’s statement that made Rijutei an apostate is non-existent in Ellen C. Parsons’s book, nor in any other documents. Instead, Rijutei expressed his continuing efforts for evangelization of Korea at the end of his life. Therefore, Rijutei should be given a reevaluation based on Henry Loomis’s letter and other American journals that reported positively about him.

        한국 정신장애의 역학 조사 연구[I] : 각 정신장애의 유병률

        Objectives : This study aims to estimate the prevalence of the DSM-IV psychiatric disorders in Korean population using the Korean version of Composite International Diagnostic Interview (K-CIDI). Methods : Subjects were selected by taking multi-stage, cluster samples of 7,867 adult household residents, 18 to 64 years of age, in ten catchment areas. Total 78 trained interviewers administered the K-CIDI to the selected respondents, from June 1 to November30,2001. Results : Total 6,275 respondents completed the interview. Some 33.5% of respondents reported at least one lifetime disorder, 20.6% reported at least one-year disorder, and 16.7% reported at least one-month disorder. The most common lifetime disorders were alcohol abuse/dependence (17.24%), nicotine dependence/withdrawal (11.19%), specific phobia (5.16%), and major de-pressive disorder (4.25%). The lifetime prevalence of substance abuse/dependence (0.25%) and schizophrenia (0.16%) was very low. Nicotine and alcohol use disorder showed very high male/female ratio. Mood disorder and anxiety disorder were more prevalent among female than male. Conclusion : The prevalence of psychiatric disorders was high. In comparison with other studies, remarkable differences in distributions of psychiatric disorders across the areas and times were observed.

      • PCR-Select cDNA Subtraction을 이용한 Allomyces macrogynus의 팡이실의 성장 관련 유전자의 분리

        Allomyces macrogyuns의 이배체 꼬리홀씨들은, 공세포로 전환된 후, 실뿌리에 이어 팡이실을 형성하는데, 팡이실로 성장하는 과정에서 대기중의 산소의 고갈로 인하여 길이 성장이 급격히 촉진된다. 본 연구에서는, 길이 성장에 관련하는 유전자를 분리하기 위해서 보통의 대기 조건에서 자란 팡이실(Normoxia)과 하나의 탈산소제를 처리한 조건에서 자란 팡이실(Hypoxia)을 수확하여 PCR을 이용한 cDNA subtraction(PVR-select cDNA subtraction)을 수행하였다. PCR로 선택된 subtracted cDNA는 pGEM-T vector에 삽입 후, 대장균에 클로닝하여, 115개의 형질전환체를 무작위적으로 골라 slot blot hybridization을 하였다. 그 결과, 대부분의 클론이 Normoxic 조건에서 보다 Hypoxic 조건에서 다량 발현되는 유전자로나타났으며, 이들 중에서 60개의 클론을 DNA 염기 서열 분석하였더니 19가지의 서로 다른 염기 서열로 동정되었다. 이 유전자들을 Genbank Database와의 유사성을 조사했을 때, 염기 서열상 이미 알려진 유전자와의 유사성이 적었으나, 아미노산 서열상으로는 몇 가지 단백질들과 유사한 것으로 나타났다. 60개의 클론 중에서 높은 빈도로 나타나는 4가지 클론을 northern hybridization하였더니, 대략적으로 각각 0.9kb, 1.9kb, 1.9kb, 2.8kb의 mRNA로 전사되는 것으로, Hypoxic 조건의 팡이실에서 특이적으로 발현되는 것으로 나타났다. Diploid zoospore of Allomyces macrogynus form hyphae after encystment and rhizoid formation. It was the linear growth of hyphae that was stimulated on their growth by oxygen depletion in the atmosphere. In this study, CDNA subtraction with PCR(PCR-select cDNA subtraction) between hyphae incubated under normal atmosphere(Normoxia) and hyphae incubated with an oxygen absorbent(Hypoxia) were performed in order to isolate the genes related to the linear growth. PCR-select Subtracted cDNAs were cloned into E. coli JM 109 using pGEM-T vector. Total 115 transformants were randomly selected and analysed by slot blot hybridization. Most of them were found to be expressed in higher level in Hypoxic condition than in Normoxic condition. Of them, 60 clones were sequenced. They were identified as 19 clones, since nucleotide sequence of 60 clones was identical. Nucleotide homology search of these clones showed no significant homology with known genes, whereas amino acid sequence homology revealed that they had some homology with known proteins. Northern hybridization analysis of 4 frequently appeared clones among 60 clones confirmed that they were expressed in higher level in Hypoxic condition and their mRNA sizes were approximately 0.9kb, 1.9kb, 1.9kb, 2.8kb, respectively.

        The condensed results of the analytical study on 361 doctoral dissertations in science education recorded in Dissertation Abstracts International during the years of 1985 - 1989 are as follows: About eighty to hundred dissertations were produced annually, but a slight decline in number was noted currently. About 94.4% of dissertations were produced by the universities in the USA. The research data of 361 dissertations were collected from 25 countries. Over 40% of total dissertations had been focused on high school(senior middle school) and college students as the source of research. Disciplines of science constituting the background of dissertations were biologj(19.1%), physics(12.7%), chemistry(12.0%) and earth science(2.5%). Concerning the research branches, the number of dissertations belonging to complex research(composed of experimental and theoretical research) was 118(32.7%) and those belonging to experimental and theoretical research were 88( 24.4%) and 74(20.5%) respectively. Also that belonging to computer-aided research was 45(12.5%). The general methods of data collection were examination & test(34.9% ), questionaire(22.2 %) and complex method(l9.1%). The main areas of dissertations were academic achievement(31.8%), teaching assessment nd pedagogy(18.8%).

        티타늄 상에 강유전성 barium titanate 박막 형성과 분극처리에 의한 유사체액 내에서의 calcium phosphate 생성 증진

        This study was performed to fabricate a ferroelectric barium titanate (BaTiO₃, BTO) thin film on Ti substrate and to evaluate the effect of poling treatment for the improvement of calcium phosphate (Ca-P) formation. BTO thin-film was spin-coated on Ti substrate by dipping-pyrolysis technique using coating sol obtained by mixing Ba-naphthenate and Ti-naphthenate as starting substances. Pre-heating temperature of the BTO thin film was performed at 500℃ because organic-solvent was completely volatilized without any crystal growth, and the final heat treatment was performed at 600, 650, 700, 750, 800, 850℃, respectively. By repeating the coating and pre-heating procedure gor 20 times, homogeneous thin film of 0.7㎛ thickness could be fabricated, and it performed well during the poling treatment without breakdown. The final heating treatment of the BTO thin film at 750℃ produced a homogeneous crystalline structure without heterogeneous TiO₂formation, which was confirmed by field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM) and X-ray diffraction analyser (XRD). An average grain size of 20∼30 ㎚ were confirmed by SEM observation. The final heat-treated BTO thin-films were polarized (Ep = 5 V/㎛) from 160℃ to 25℃ in heating chamber for 2 h. The negatively poled BTO thin film (N-BTO), non-poled BTO thin film (BTO), Ti substrate (Ti), and 600℃ heat-treated Ti (Ti-O) were immersed in SBF and Eagle's MEM solution for 15 days at 37℃. After the immersion period, the morphological and compositional changes of the surfaces were investigated using a FE-SEM and an energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDX). After immersion in simulated body fluid (SBF), sodium chloride (Nacl) crystals were formed on Ti, Ti-O, and BTO surfaces due to anion adsorption (Cl), while Ca-P crystals were formed on N-BTO surfaces. We assumed that rapidly adsorded cations (Ca²□ ions) on the negatively charged surface at the initial stage acted as nuclei for the formation of Ca-P crystals. In MEM, sodium chloride (NaCl) was formed on Ti, and Ca-P layer including NaCl was formed on Ti-O. Weak and sparse Ca-P layers were formed on BTO, while thick, homogeneous, and dense Ca-P layer was formed on N-BTO, which was confirmed by FE-SEM and EDX. These results demonstrated that introducing a N-BTO on Ti is an effective method for the improvement of Ca-P formation in SBF and MEM. In conclusion, negatively charged ferroelectric BTO thin-film on Ti would improve the possibility of implant osseointegration.
