A Study of the Pious Education of John Amos Comenius
이숙종 한국기독교교육정보학회 2004 Journal of Christian education information tech Vol.0 No.6
This paper is aimed to explore the significance and meaning of the pious knowledge which John Amos Comenius exposed as one of three kinds of knowledge: intellectual, moral and religious in his holistic education for all people in the history of the Christian education, The incorporation of all three was the aim of his universal education. He thought that man is potentially capable of erudition, virtue and piety, with an optimistic and universal view of possibilities. His idea of pious knowledge is bound to go hand in hand with ideas on intellectual knowledge as moral knowledge as the other main elements of his holistic education. Then they were inseparable in relation to the complete personality of all man. The pious education for nurturing of the pious knowledge of the humanity, for Comenius, begins with the proposition that man, under the guidance of nature, can penetrate knowledge of all things in discussing the objects of his education. He understands from the onset that since man was naturally endowed with only the seeds of knowledge, of virtue, and of piety, these seeds must be acquired by education. Thus Comenius insists that all men, especially young children, should be taught in a manner which would imbue them with the value of knowledge, virtue and piety. In this paper, we will deal with the pious education, namely, the spiritual education, which Comenius thought of as the primary nature of the human being; preferable to the two other seeds: intellectual and moral. This study consists of three parts: firstly, the source of piety, secondly, the instruction of piety, and finally, the aim of pious education.
