Outbreaks of piglet diarrhoea were investigated in 6 pig herds involving 2,545 piglets from 293 farrowings in Kyungnam province with particular regard to weanling colibacillary diarrhoea. Some investigations on the effect of feeding Streptococcus faecium Cernelle 68 on the prevention and treatment of postweaning diarrhoea of piglets were also studied. The incidence rate of postweaning diarrhoea of piglets was 13.6% while that of baby piglet diarrhoea (1 week diarrhoea) and milk scours (3 week diarrhoea) were 9.0% and 23.3%, respectively. As much as 61.5% (64 of 104 cases) of piglets with postweaning diarrhoea were associated with Escherichia coli infection while 8.7% of them were proved to be Salmonella infection. However, the causes of the remaining cases (29.8%) were left yet to be determined. Fifty-eight of 64 cultures (90.6%) of haemolytic E. coli recovered from piglets with postweaning colibaciliary diarrhoea classified into a few 0 groups, the most prevalent 0 groups being in decreasing order 0138 (29.7%), 0149 (20.3%), 08(14.1%) and 0141(12.5%). Peroral administration of St. faecium Cernelle 68 at the rate of 2 X 10^(9)c.f.u./day for the first 3 days of postweaning life has reduced significantly the occurrence of diarrhoea. Significant difference in diarrhoic scores were noted from 4 to 10 days postweaning. The duration of scours in piglets with postweaning diarrhoea was reduced significantly provided the oral administration of St. faecium Cernelle 68 (2x 10^(9) c.f.u./dose) twice daily was given to diarrhoic piglets in addition to antibiotic treatment. The effect of St. faecium on the treatment of diarrhoea in piglets responded additionally to that of sensitive antibiotics.

A partial and preliminary report of the reproductive performance of swine in the south eastern part of Korea (Youngnam province) during 1983 was given. For the 871 farrowings recorded, the mean litter size at birth was 8.9 and 0.61 piglet per litter was stillborn. Of the total number of piglets born alived, some 15.4 percent never reached the age of weaning, the vast majority succumbing within 3 days of birth. The major factor of piglet death from birth to weaning were diarrhoea (34.6%), crushing(17.4), weak pigs (15.8%), starvation(11.8%) and pneumonia (6.7%).

The anti-obesity effect of a mixture of Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis CP-9 and Lactobacillus rhamnosus bv-77 in an obese mouse model was studied. Obesity was induced in C57BL/6J mice by providing a 60 kcal% high fat diet (HFD) for 7 weeks. The mice were then administered probiotics for 5 weeks and divided into five groups as follows: (1) normal control group (10 kcal% fat diet), (2) HFD group (60 kcal% fat diet), (3) low dose-treated group (HFD + 5×10 8 colony forming units (cfu)/mouse), (4) middle dose-treated group (HFD + 2.5×10 9 cfu/mouse), and (5) high dose-treated group (HFD + 5×10 9 cfu/mouse). Supplementation with the probiotic mixture did not affect plasma alanine aminotransferase and aspartate aminotransferase levels. Probiotic supplementation was decreased body weight gain, plasma lipid levels, and adipose tissue. In addition, mixed probiotics significantly altered the levels of plasma insulin, adiponectin, and leptin. Histological analysis of liver and epididymal adipose tissue also revealed reduced fat deposition and adipocyte size. These results suggest that the probiotic mixture of Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis CP-9 and Lactobacillus rhamnosus bv-77 can alleviate diet-induced obesity and associated diseases by regulating fat accumulation, lipid metabolism, and the levels of leptin and adiponectin.
