Middleware for application software of Process Control System (PCS) in Industrial Steel Plants is important for offering independence of platform complexity and transparency, reusability, and flexibility in terms of moving one control system’s application software to the others. For the purpose of design and develop of those middleware systems, we first showed hierarchical field network architecture of industrial iron & steel process control system and a several of technical requirements of middleware for it. And then, we introduced A Real-time Open Middleware System (AROMS) for application software on that field. AROMS is a middleware integrated with general-purpose system platforms for industrial plant automation and operates on standard hardware with general operating systems. AROMS reflects middleware’s requirements for iron & steel process control system.

In this paper, we proposed a level 2 middleware with common services for controlling steel plants, which is named POSMOS. POSMOS supports eight middleware services currently, but, this paper described in detail two representative services of the common services: file service and external communication service and their respective measured performance. In the experiment section, we described the performance of the two representative services and a case using our middleware which shows better response time than the existing commercial middleware by about 32%.

We developed an inspection system to detect defects at edge of strip. Normally, the edge side of strip has many defects against inside before/after milling. And the status of strip edge is not good such as wave, roughness and color variation. An inspection system has difficult for image processing to detect the defects of this side. So. we developed EDD(edge defect detect) which is able to detect edge crack, bur, surface defects(scab, roll mark) and defect of shearing side.

본 논문은 철강공정을 위한 미들웨어 구조를 제시하였다. 제안된 미들웨어는 커널 코어, 철강공정에 필요한 각 서비스 기능, 응용 소프트웨어와의 연결을 유지하는 채널 매니저, 응용 소프트웨어의 서비스 요구를 처리하는 API 핸들러, 미들웨어 사용 API로 구성된다. 제안된 미들웨어는 분산환경을 지원하며, 산업체에서 주로 사용되는 운영체제들을 지원하도록 구현하였다. 제안된 미들웨어에 대해 각 서비스의 성능이 측정되었으나, 지면상 본 논문에는 동기 메시지 서비스, 타이머 서비스의 성능만을 제시하였다. 또한 제안된 미들웨어를 철강공정 중 하나인 열간압연공정에 적용한 결과, 기존 상용 미들웨어를 사용한 환경에 비해 응답시간 성능이 30-35% 향상하였음을 보였다.

This paper presents a new defect detection algorithm for scale-covered steel slab surfaces. The slab surfaces are covered with scales, which are formed due to the deposition of unavoidable oxidized substances produced during manufacturing. The presence of scale makes it very difficult to accurately defect detection. In this paper, we focus on the burr defects among various surface defects. In order to facilitate the development of the detection algorithm, burr defects are divided into two classes according to the defect shapes namely, projection burr and residual burr. The binarization with threshold, horizontal projection profile, and sobel filter are used to detect projection burr. On the other hand, discrete wavelet transform, texture analysis based on histogram and support vector machine are applied to detect residual burr. Finally, the experimental results conducted on slab surface images from actual steel production line show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.
