Feature selection and feature weighting are useful techniques for improving the classification accuracy of k-Nearest Neighbor (k-NN) classifier. The main propose of feature selection and feature weighting is to reduce the number of features, by eliminating irrelevant and redundant features, while simultaneously maintaining or enhancing classification accuracy. In this paper, a novel hybrid approach is proposed for simultaneous feature selection, feature weighting and choice of k in k-NN classifier based on Genetic Algorithm. The results have indicated that the proposed algorithm is quite comparable with and superior to existing classifiers with or without feature selection and feature weighting capability.

N/A Both interictal and ictal Tc-99m-HMPAO brain SPECT were performed in 22 patients with medically intractable epilepsy. Localization of epileptic foci in our patients was made by combined results of EEG and other tests, including Wada test, magnetic resonance imaging, and neuropsy- chometric test. Among them, ictal Tc-99m-HMPAO SPECT, localized epilptic foci in 20 of 22 patients and provided evidence of epileptic focus in 12 patients by demonstrating maximally increased regional cerebral perfusion (rCP) in epileptic foci during the ictal study with decreased rCP in interictal study. Ictal Tc-99m-HMPAO SPECT Was particularly useful for investigating epileptic foci, and when correlated with simultaneously recorded ictal EEG, provided further insight for localizing epileptic foci. Conclusively, Tc-99m-HMPAO SPECT is a useful, noninvasive method of localizing epileptic activity which may be particularly important for presurgical investigations, especially in those patients without large morphological lesions.

Authors reported a case of rapid cycling affective disorder(RCAD) developed after the damage of temporal lobe by traffic accident. Patient showed sharp transients on bilateral temporal area of nasopharyngeal EEG and a significant decrease of blood flow of left temporal area on SPECT. The kindling desensitization in the temporal lobe and limbic system has been accepted as the most probable hypothesis in development of RCAD. In our case, same pathophysiology was thought to play a causative role in development of RCAD.

Improved diagnostic tools, patient selection, and operative techniques have brought a resurgence of the surgical management of intractable epilepsy recently. And the most remarkable developments of epilepsy surgery are various kinds of intensive presurgical evaluation. The aims of presurgical evaluations for intractable epilepsy are : 1) The diagnosis of exact types of epilepsy for appropriate medical treatment as well as for surgical intervention. 2) The exact localization of epileptogenic region responsible for the patient's habitual seizures and testing for functional safety of the focal resection of epileptogenic region. Theoretically the presurgical evaluations can be classified as noninvasive and invasive studies. The noninvasive presurgical studies include various kinds of EEG investigations, neuroimaging, neuropsychological studies and other laboratory studies. The invasive presurgical evaluations include various kinds of intracranial electrode recording and functional brain mapping. The authors analysed the invasive presurgical evaluations of Yonsei epilepsy program since Oct. 1989 and reviewed the literatures.

Since October, 1989, the authors underwent operations for 20 patients of medically intractable epilepsy. Eight patients with temporal lobe epilepsy were treated by temporal lobectomy. Four patients with extratemporal focus of seizure were treated with extratemporal corticectomy. Eight patients with multiple types of seizure were treated with callosotomy. The presurgical evaluations of epileptic seizures were very important The presurgical evaluations were standard EEG, CCTV-EEG monitoring, neuroimaging, neuropsychological test, Wada test and invasive study . with intracranial electrodes. There were no serious complications after operation The authors concluded that epilepsy surgery seemed to be safe and helpful method for the treatment of medically intractable epilepsy.
