A PLC-Based Optical Sub-assembly of Triplexer Using TFF-Attached WDM and PD Carriers

We have fabricated a planar lightwave circuit (PLC) hybrid-integrated optical sub-assembly of a triplexer using a thin film filter (TFF)-attached wavelength division multiplexer (WDM) and photodiode (PD) carriers. Two types of TFFs were attached to a diced side of a silica-terraced PLC platform, and the PD carriers with a 45° mirror on which pin- PDs were bonded were assembled with the platform. A clear transmitter eye-pattern and minimum receiver sensitivity of -24.5 dBm were obtained under 1.25 Gb/s operation for digital applications, and a second-order inter-modulation distortion (IMD2) of -70 dBc was achieved for an analog receiver.

Goodved $SiO_2$ 박막을 갖는 Mach-Zehnder(M-Z)형태의 $Ti:LiNbO_3$ 진행파 광변조기의 전극구조를 변화시켜가며 유한요소법에 의한 해석을 수행하였다. 최적의 설계치를 추출하였으며, 제작된 전극에 대하여 특성임피던스($Z_o$), 마이크로파 유효굴절률($N_{eff}$), 감쇠정수($a_o$)를 측정하여 그 결과를 이론치와 비교하였다. 전극두께가 11${\mu}m$이고, $SiO_2$ 완중박막을 식각한 전극에 대하여, RF 측정결과로부터 계산된 3dB 변조대역폭은 18GHz로 나타났다. A Mach-Zehnder type $Ti:LiNbO_3$ optical modulator with a grooved $SiO_2$ buffer layer, was evaluated in terms of an electrode structure. The finite element method was performed to find out the optinum design parameters of electrodes. characteristic impedance ($Z_o$), MW effective index ($N_{eff}$) and attenuation constant ($a_o$)of fabricated traveling-wave electrodes were measured and compared with those obtained by the simulation expectation. For an optical modulator with 11${\mu}m$thick electrodes and a grooved $SiO_2$ buffer layer, the 3dB bandwidth based on the RF measurement results turned out to be 18GHz.

Mach-Zehnder type traveling-wave Ti:LiNb $O_3$ optical modulators were designed and fabricated. Optimum parameters of optical waveguides were calculated by means of the FDM. Design of CPW traveling-wave electrodes were performed by the FEM in the active region and by the CMM in the input/output section to obtain the conditions of MW effective index and impedance matching. From the measured S parameters, MW characteristics of the traveling-wane electrodes were extracted to be ${\alpha}_m$=0.05426 $\sqrt{f}$, $N_{eff}$=2.2025, and $Z_{c}$=39 ${\Omega}$. The calculated optical response R($\omega$) showed the 3 dB bandwidth of 10 GHz.z.. Mach-Zehnder 간섭기를 이용한 Ti:$LiNbO_3$ 진행파 광변조기를 설계 및 제작하였다. FDM을 이용하여 광도파로의 최적 설계치를 추출하였다. CPW 진행파전극의 MW 유효굴절률 및 특성임피던스를 정합시키기 위하여 taper 영역의 입·출력단에서는 CMM을, 변조영역에서는 FEM으로 설계를 수행하였다. 제작된 소자의 MW 특성으로는, S 파라미터로부터 감쇠상수 ${\alpha}_m$=0.05426 $\sqrt{f}$, MW 유효굴절률 $N_{eff}$=2.2025, 특성임피던스 $Z_c$=39 ${\Omega}$이 추출되었다. MW 특성으로부터 계산한 주파수응답 $R({\omega})$의 3 dB 변조대역폭은 ~10GHz으로 예측되었다.

위상반전(phase reversal)시키는 전극구조를 갖는 진행파 광변조기에서 주파수응답의 추정을 간결한 형태로 제시하였다. 유도된 식을 근거로 한 모의전산을 통하여 위상반전 전극구조가 대역통과 특성을 가질 수 있음을 보였고 진행파전극의 마이크로파(MW) 파라미터를 변화시켰을 때 주파수응답에 미치는 영향을 분석하였다. 특히 MW 유효굴절률과 변조영역의 길이를 변화시킴으로써 대역통과 특성을 가지는 주파수 응답의 중심주파수와 대역폭을 효과적으로 조절할 수 있음을 보였다. Estimation of the frequency response of Ti:LiNb03 traveling-wave optical modulator with phase reversal electrodes is succinctly presented. The fact that such devices may have bandpass characteristics is demonstrated through simulations based on the derived equations. The influence of each parameter of traveling-wave electrodes on the frequency response is investigated in detail. It is shown that the center frequency and the bandwidth of response curves can be effectively adjustable by changing the MW effective index and the interaction length of the electrodes. rodes.
Polymer 1x2 Thermo-Optic Digital Optical Switch Based on the Total-Internal-Reflection Effect

This letter presents a polymer 1x2 thermo-optic total- internal-reflection digital optical switch (TIR-DOS) with an index contrast of 1.5%-∆ operating at low power consumption. The structure of our 1x2 TIR-DOS was created by adding a reflection port to that of a conventional multimode filtering variable optical attenuator. To improve the total-internal- reflection efficiency, a heater offset was applied to the crossing region of multimode waveguides of the TIR-DOS. The fabricated 1x2 TIR-DOS shows a low electrical power consumption of 18 mW for an on-off ratio of 35 dB.

Intra- and inter- datacenter data traffic is rapidly increasing due to the spread of smart devices, cloud computing, and non-face-to-face services. Recently, 400-Gbps optical transceivers based on 100-Gbps/channel have been released primarily by major overseas companies. Various solutions for next-generation datacenter interconnect are being proposed by international standardization and multiple source agreement groups. Following this trend, ETRI has developed a 400-Gbps optical transmission/reception engine using 100-Gbps/channel light sources and photodetectors as well as a silica-based AWG. In the future, technologies of optical devices and components for intra-datacenter communication are expected to be developed based on a data rate of 200-Gbps/channel. Thus, 1.6-Tbps class optical transceivers will be released.
