The Effects of Contextualized vs. Decontextualized Exposure to Vocabulary on Korean Adult EFL Learners’ Vocabulary Acquisition

        최현혜,이혜문 한국영어영문학회 2008 영어 영문학 Vol.54 No.6

The present study examined the effect of contextualized exposure to English vocabulary in comparison to word list with word definitions on Korean upper intermediate adult English learners’ vocabulary acquisition. Ten target words were implemented within nine newspaper articles for the contextualized group of 11 learners. They encountered each target word three times at least in different contexts. The other 11 learners in the word list group were given the list of all the words in the reading passages including the unknown words. They were instructed to look up for the unknown words in the dictionary and to memorize them for the later test. Word list group outperformed the contextualized group in definition test in the immediate post test whereas the contextualized group outperformed the word list group in the fill-in-the-blank test. Such differential effects disappeared in the delayed post test because contextualized group improved in both tests in two weeks whereas the word list group’s scores decreased. It was concluded that contextualization is more effective for vocabulary learning if the conditions are met for incidental vocabulary learning. 유아의 창의,인성리더십 평가를 위한 루브릭 개발에 관한 사례연구: 인내

최현혜 ( Hyun Hye Choi ),이소희 ( So Hee Lee ) 대한아동복지학회 2014 아동복지연구 Vol.12 No.3

The purpose of this study is to develop an assessment that helps to understand and assess the creativity-character leadership of young children. In particular, this study chooses one of the creativity-character leadership behaviors-patience-as its main topic and develops its rubric with a case study. The results of the rubric development in this study are as follows: This research practiced a ‘stop-think-do’ program with assessment categories from previous studies. To present an assessment category reflecting actual creativity-character leadership behavior, a ‘marshmallow study’ was performed. The subjects of the study were 104 children aged 3 to 5 years old in four kindergartens in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do. The result of the analysis is like this: During STOP, children put down the marshmallow when their friends told them not to eat or they did not eat by themselves or their friends help them not to eat. THINK step can be divided into ‘perceiving’ and ‘finding strategy’ behavior. ‘Perceiving’ includes exploring marshmallow, enduring the desire with friends, and expecting results or rewards. ‘Finding strategy’ can be split up two kinds of behavior. ‘Turning attention’ shows behaviors like simply turning attention to surrounding. ‘Imagining’ includes various imagination. During DO, some young children eventually ate marshmallow alittle bit, and others endured without eating or helped their friends not to eat. Based on this result, this study determines assessment levels and describes the characters of each level, and finally makes the rubric. In the end, teachers verified the content’s validity and second, specialists in this field verified the content’s validity in terms of the developed rubric.

The Effects of Caffeine on the Long Bones and Testes in Immature and Young Adult Rats

        곽유진,최현혜,노재숙 한국독성학회 2017 Toxicological Research Vol.33 No.2

This study was to evaluate the age-dependent effects of caffeine exposure on the long bones and reproductive organs using male rats. A total of 15 immature male rats and 15 young adult male rats were allocated randomly to three groups: a control group and two groups fed caffeine with 120 and 180 mg/kg/day for 4 weeks. Exposure to caffeine at either dose significantly reduced body weight gain; a proportional reduction in muscle and fat mass in immature animals, whereas a selective reduction in fat mass with relatively preserved muscle mass in young adult animals. The long bones of immature rats exposed to caffeine were significantly shorter and lighter than those of control animals along with decreased bone minerals. However, there was no difference in the length or weight of the long bones in young adult rats exposed to caffeine. Exposure to caffeine reduced the size and absolute weight of the testes significantly in immature animals in comparison to control animals, but not in young adult animals exposed to caffeine. In contrast, the adrenal glands were significantly heavier in caffeine-fed young adult rats in comparison to control animals, but not in caffeine-fed immature rats. Our results clearly show that the negative effects of caffeine on the long bones and testes in rats are different according to the age of the rat at the time of exposure, and might therefore be caused by changes to organ sensitivity and metabolic rate at different developmental stages. Although the long bones and testes are more susceptible to caffeine during puberty, caffeine has negative effects on body fat, bone minerals and the adrenal glands when exposure occurs during young adulthood. There is a need, therefore, to educate the public the potential dangers of caffeine consumption during puberty and young adulthood.

Production of VP2 protein of canine parvovirus-2c expressed in baculovirus expression system

        박세연,이주연,송재영,이윤희,최현혜,문서영,김민지,윤수영,조수동,이지현,현방훈,우인옥 한국예방수의학회 2020 예방수의학회지 Vol.44 No.2

Viral protein 2 (VP2), which is the structural protein of parvovirus, can produce virus-like particles (VLPs) by a self-assembly process in vitro, making VLPs attractive vaccine candidates. VP2 of canine parvovirus (CPV) is responsible for neutralizing antibodies in immunized animals. In this study, VP2 protein of canine parvovirus-2c was expressed using a baculovirus expression system and assembled into parvovirus-like particles in insect cells. The results show that VP2 proteins assembled into virus-like particles (VLPs) with antigenic properties similar to those of natural CPV and a high hemagglutination (HA) titer (1:27). The recombinant 6-His-tagged VP2 protein with a molecular mass of about 65 kDa was detected by anti-His antibody and anti-PPV serum. This study provides a foundation for the application of VP2 protein in the clinical diagnosis of CPV and in the vaccination against CPV.
