This paper describes CMT (Conceptual Metaphor Theory) and CBT (Conceptual Blending Theory), showing that the poetic language found in literature has a place in cognitive linguistic study. These cognitive linguistics show that metaphor is a way of experiencing and understanding unfamiliar concepts via familiar ones. Great poets can speak to us because they use the mode of thought we all possess. In this paper, I pose an ordinary question aboutf the theory of metaphor, specifically CMT and CBT, and more broadly within the mechanism of metaphor, I review the cognitive linguistic metaphoric system of Robert Frost's poetry, “Hyla Brook.” Literature education that considers consilience can be educationally efficient by extending new prospect of thoughts through combinations of thinking based on literary works, and by achieving integrated learning within various fields of study. This paper describes cognitive neural network and conceptual blending theory, showing that literary research has a place in cognitive linguistic studies. These cognitive mechanisms say that the mind is inherently embodied, that thought is mostly unconscious and that abstract concepts are largely metaphorical. I raise some questions of cognitive unconsciousness and metaphors, conceptual blending and more spaciously within cognitive operations, I try to review the cognitive linguistic metaphoric system in Fitzgerald’s novel, The Great Gatsby. The society in-Fitzgerald’s novels is not always beautiful and friendly to man, but more often indifferent and hostile to him. In a highly industrialized modern world, man cannot but feel an extreme sense of confrontation, conflicts, and alienation between man and society as well as man and man. There exist various aspects between idealism and materialism by giving many characters in The Great Gatsby. Moral was destroyed by the pursuit of physical pleasure, and only the sense of emptiness and boredom was prevalent. As a consequence of analyzing the novel, this study asserts that critical thoughts in consilience raise questions as to our fundamental principles and give them fresh creative theories.

This paper examines the theory of relativity and quantum mechanics, showing that poetic language of literature has a place in cognitive metaphor study. Far from being merely a matter of words, metaphor is a matter of thought, all kinds of thought: thought about emotion, about society, about human character, and about the nature of life and death. Also metaphor in the theory of relativity and quantum mechanics brought many changes to concepts about matter and gave many methods to the study of consciousness. Classical science had limits in the methods of observation and describing, but quantum and theory of relativity mechanics overcomes these limitations and describes matter and consciousness as two aspects of one thing. On the contrary, these metaphysical mechanics shook the cognitive framework of human beings. This study examines the relationship between theory of relativity and quantum mechanics as described by metaphor. I try to examine quantum and the theory of relativity mechanics in “West Running Brook”. This paper claims that integrated thinking ability in consilience raised questions as to our essential principles and gave them new theories. (Incheon National University)

Lakoff and Johnson (1989) argue that metaphor is a tool so ordinary that we use it unconsciously and automatically, with so little effort that we hardly notice it. Metaphor suffuses our thoughts, no matter what we are thinking about. Paul Churchland (1989) suggests the theory of representation from the results of research in cognitive biology. According to representational theory, our representations of ourselves and our world can be represented as the locations of phase state spaces with the movements of the neurons. In this respect, this paper takes sight to analyze the role of metaphors and representations in Robert Frost"s poetry. I raise some questions based on both the conceptual blending theory of cognitive linguistics and the theory of cognitive science. I try to apply those theories to a poem titled “The Oven Bird.” As a result of this analysis, this study suggests that critical idea in consilience has raised questions as to our basic principles and given them new ingenious theories.

It is commonly thought that metaphor is something that belongs only to poets and the work of poets. But great poets, as master craftsman, use basically the same metaphors we use. Lakoff and Johnson (1980) say that metaphor is a tool so ordinary that we use it unconsciously and automatically, with so little effort that we hardly notice it. Metaphor is an integral part of our ordinary everyday thought and language. It is central to our understanding of our culture, philosophy, science, and the world at large. From this point of view, in this paper, my aim is to analyze the role of Metaphor in T. S. Eliot’s Poetry. I raise some questions of the theory of metaphors and physics, ‘conceptual metaphor theory’, and more widely, within the theory of relativity, I try to examine the system of theory through Burnt Norton. As a result of analyzing, this research suggests that critical thinking in consilience raised questions as to our fundamental principles and gave them new creative theories. (Inha University)

This paper describes cognitive linguistics and the theory of relativity, disclosing that a study of literary work has a place in cognitive metaphor study. Lakoff and Johnson (1980) claim that metaphor is a tool so widely pervaded in everyday that we utilize it automatically and unconsciously with so little effort that we scarcely notice it. Also, metaphor in cognitive linguistics and the theory of relativity changed not only the way of describing particles and movement but also the view point about scientific phenomena. The movement of time, according to the theory of relativity, becomes slower in proportion to the speed of movement, and two events which one perceives simultaneously may seem to perceive successively to others. On the contrary, these metaphysical phenomena shook the cognitive framework of mankind. This paper, from this point of view, aims to study the role of metaphors in Eliot’s Little Gidding. I try to examine cognitive linguistics and the theory of relativity in Little Gidding. This study suggests that creative thinking in consilience raises questions to our basic principles and give them new theories.
