Vol.56 No.-

Foucault's Historie de la Sexualite has had a profound and controversial impact on ancient history. His second volume deals with the ancient world and further explores the theory postulated in the first volume that 'sexuality' is a modern construct that had no social or cultural reality before the beginning of the 19th century. 'Homosexuality', 'heterosexuality' and 'bisexuality' are equally as modern and equally meaningless when applied to the sexual experiences of ancient Greece and Rome. This Foucauldian theory was utilized by the Classicists including Halperin, Zeitlin and Winkler etc. Richlin, the strongest opponent, has the opinion that Foucauldian scholars ignore the role of feminist research, and focus on ‘male sexuality’, and tend to bracket ‘of cultures with an explicit valorization of the studied culture, as opposed to our own.' And she rejects the constructionist argument that ‘homosexuality and heterosexuality are modern bourgeois productions. Nothing resembling them can be found in classical antiquity.' Despite the contentions endemic in Foucault's work like this, the work has provoked a notable increase in scholarly interest in the area of Greek and Roman sexuality. So Foucault's discourse on sexuality makes us reconsider the inequity of power in sexuality. But Foucault's micro-analysis should be modified by the macro-analysis, especially in connection with the political power, which was the essential factor in the ancient world.

Vol.4 No.1

The Republic of Korea has chosen a centralized system for its government procurement because this system has the merits to administer budgets efficiently, promote procurement business expertise, and minimize the cost of deals, in comparison to the decentralized procurement system. Recently, e-Commerce has become widespread and in turn, the recognition and patterns of previous business transactions have also changed significantly as convenience in the purchasing process, economical time utilization and widespread search functions are provided by e-business. Therefore, the government procurement organization, Public Procurement Service(PPS) has established a nationwide integrated Government e-Procurement System(GePS) on the basis of e-business that enables both purchasers and suppliers to use this one system according their needs. These roles of the government procurement organization are similar to those of an informediary that provides necessary information to both consumers and suppliers, and conducts cost-reducing functions. This study categorized the roles of an informediary in terms of the abundance of information, information customization, convenience of business transactions, interaction between administrators and users, system stability, and reliability through literature research. It also examines the effects of these factors upon the satisfaction of clients using this nationwide integrated Government e-Procurement System(GePS) by empirical analysis. The results of the empirical analysis show that all factors have positive effects upon customer satisfaction and reliability based on interaction. System stability has relatively greater significance than the convenience of business transactions. That is, the nationwide integrated Government e-Procurement System(GePS)should be operated considering all factors that affect it. Especially, the construction of customer reliability has turned out to be the most significant factor on the part of the central procurement organization.

Vol.51 No.-

The Aim of this paper is threefold: First, what are the peculiar characteristics of Polybius’ Histories? Second, what is the meaning of the keyword ανακuκλωcιc and why the word was adopted as the core idea in book 6. Third, and are there any ingenious or original viewpoints in the Polybian historiography, using the words like ανακuκλωcιc? The theory of ανακuκλωcιc was completed by Polybius for the first time. But it was derived from traditional Greek thought for long-time, and seems to be originated directly from the popular philosophy of the Hellenistic era. The idea of ‘Mixed Political System’ also seems to be originated from the long-time ‘ancient’ thoughts. Although Polybius’ historiography and terms must be due to the contemporary thoughts of his own age and was well-known ‘frame of reference’ at that time, it must be Polybius himself who tried to solve the question, why the new ‘Ruler of the World’(κuριοι τηcοικοuμενηc) succeeded and what the future of it would be? In that respect, there must be a new viewpoint and a new methodology in Poybian historiography, especially in book 6. On the rethinking of the meaning of the well-known theory ανακuκλωcιc, it’s the contribution of Polybius himself who makes a new interpretation on the realities of the new world ruler and on the peculiarity of its political system. I can not help speaking how widespread his ideas and methodologies were affecting his contemporaries and the generations to come. For example, Cicero wrote De Re Publica and there he described the Roman polity as the idealistic mixed system under the influence of the Histories. Moreover, the modern political thoughts of power-dispersion and the check-and- balance system must be originated from Polybius. Montesquieu wrote l’Esprit de Loi and built the ‘Three Split Theory’ of the national power, inspired by the ‘check and balance’ of the Roman political systems. In addition to that, the Polybian influence to the constitutional fathers of the United States of America was de facto παραδοξοc which was the expression he favored for the case of ‘accidents of the unthinkable’. ‘Three Split Theory’ and the case of the American constitution may be his own παραδοξοc, according to his own favorite expression.

Postmodernism and globalization have changed the historiograghy since the 1990s. The study of ancient history cannot be excluded from this academic trends. Historians and archaeologists began to emphasize the concepts of fluidity, connectedness and networks. So can we speak of a paradigm shift in Kuhn`s sense in the history writing of the ancient world? The new model seems to be taking shape after the book of P.Horden and N.Purcell`s The Corrupting Sea: A Study of Mediterranean History. Where the old model emphasized static cells, rigid structures, and powerful institutions, the new one sees fluidity and connectedness and networks. Moreover globalization makes the role of mediterranean more important in the interpretations of ancient history. Now with the change of methodology and view-points, the main study field of the ancient world sees to be changed form the political organizations and socio-economic structures of one unit as a research field, whether it is a race or a nation or a civilization, to the connectedness and fluidity and networks of the mediterranean world. For this approach the best case may the Roman Empire and the so-called romanization between rome and colonies, not the course of the military triumph of the Romans but the course of mutual cultural effects. It is the aim of this paper which focused on the fluidity and connectedness in the ``Mediterranean Empire``.

Vol.- No.38

The aim of this paper is to treat the main changes of Ancient history in the age of Globalization, especially in Europe. What's the difference between the traditional study of the past ages and the changing trends of an era dominated by talk of Globalization. Recent writers have shown from their researches that Ancient historians have always moarned about the state of their subject, claiming that things are getting worse, students are less able, and society is against them. The abolition of compulsory Latin for Oxbridge in 1960 had more severe consequences. In addition, from the inception of British GCSE in 1988, entries for GCSE Latin have declined from that time. In Italia, Latin has been taught only in the upper secondary school(Scuola Media Superiore), from 14 to 18 years of age after 1977. The situation is not better in Germany, not to say the case of France. But the classical past has an enduring contemporary relevance in 'Global' Europe. Globalization have changed the historiography since the 1990s. Ancient historians began to emphasize the concepts of fluidity, connectedness and networks. Moreover Globalization makes the role of mediterranean more important in the interpretations of ancient history. Now with the change of methodology and view-points, the main study field of the ancient world seems to be changed from the political organizations and socio-economic structures of one unit as a research field, whether it is a race or a nation or a civilization, to the connectedness and fluidity and networks of the mediterranean world. In addition, we should perhaps have more confidence in the ability of our subject to continue to have a presence in the future culture of mankind, not to say the changing working in the global computer networks. The classical civilization can and must be the key for accessing an even wider comparison with 'other' cultures in a genuinely 'global' situation.

Vol.76 No.-

The Aims of this paper is to examine the Sociology of Contraception in the Roman Empire. Roman parents had available three methods for contraception. No matter how prevalent the use of contraceptives was, there surely must have been countless unwanted preganacies. Abortion was apparently a common solution. When contraception and abortion failed, parents of an unwanted child sometimes resorted to exposure and infanticide. By leaving the infant in a conspicuous place, clothed and with some kind of birth token(usually a piece of jewelry), parents seemed to try to protect themselves against the pain of the act by indulging in the hope that someone else would rear their child. The right of a father to expose an unwanted baby was almost unquestioned. It was after AD.374 that Roman law made infanticide a capital offense. When contraception and abortion failed, parents of an unwanted child sometimes resorted to exposure and infanticide. There is no way to determine how often parents took this extreme action. Although it is fairly well accepted that deformed and sickly babies were strangled at birth or left in a temple or on a hillside, it is by no means clear that exposure of healthy children was in any sense routine. There is a strong probability that girls were more often exposed than were boys, but at what rate is unknown. Estimates range from 10 to 20 %. It seems likely that rates of infanticide varied over time and according to economic and social conditions. Exposure seems to have been more common among the poor and more prevalent in the East after the 4th century and in the West after the 1st century B.C. This dose not mean that infanticide and exposure was the unique and most common form of family planning. Its meaning is that we should not forget the practice attracted far more attention than contraception or even abortion in the sociological analysis of Roman society.

Roman Britain and History Education on the case of Hadrian Wall and Aquae Sulis Cha, Young-Gil The Aim of this paper is two. One is to survey the archaeological studies of ``Roman Britain``. The Other is how it can be connected to improve the historical reasoning of British people for their Roman past. In this paper, for these two purposes Hadrian`s Wall and Roman Bath was examined as a case study. Study of the Roman past of Britain was slow to emerge from the medieval traditions of British history. Throughout much of the sixteenth century a fierce and often acrimonious struggle continued between the beleaguered defenders of the medieval tradition and the lively proponents of Renaissance learning. Camden tried to reconstruct the province of Britannia within a Roman context. The collectors of the seventeenth century were obviously influencd by the activities of aristocratic figures in the Mediterranean world. The early decades of the eighteenth century saw the most significant advances in knowledge of Roman Britain, which were to place the study of the province upon a new and more secure footing. The northern frontiers of Roman Britain formed an early focus of interest for antiquarians. Hodgson appears to have been the first to consider the frontier works as a whole and to construct a frontier system. Bruce`s major works provided a basis for further work on the frontier. Bath be the first Roman site to be commented on after the end of Roman rule. The rebuilding of central Bath from the mid-eighteenth century began to reveal the kind of bulidings and sculptures which educated the most fashionable place of resort in England. In this paper, I considered how processes such as excavaton, conservation and history education functioned for the study of Roman Britain. For this, two cases of Hadrian Wall and Roman Bath examined and compared.
