Some cultural techniques were applied to produce ‘Fuji’/M.9 nursery apple trees (Malus domestica) with well developed lateral shoots with or without the aid of Promalin at an experimental field in Cheongwon, Korea from March, 2005 to October, 2007. Lateral shoot development was increased by some cultural techniques such as proper planting density, notching, and removal of the leaves on shoot tip, which results were improved by Promalin spraying. Appropriate comprehension on tree physiology removed the aid of Promalin spraying for lateral shoot development in ‘Fuji’/M.9 nursery apple trees. Trees on high density with double row produced the same level of lateral shoots (7.9 shoots) as those on low density with single row (7.8 shoots) whereas trees on high density with single row output fewer lateral shoots (6.9 shoots). In notching, the practice with thick gap slightly improved lateral shoot development but the application with thin gap brought out noticeable increase as showing another 10% development. In leaf tearing-off, the more frequent application led to more amounts of lateral shoot development as recording around 18 shoots by 5-time application. While lateral shoot development was hardly increased by leaf cutting-off regardless of its severities, the development was quite improved by Promalin spraying. The combined application of Promalin spraying with a half leaf cutting-off gave another 15% improvement. A half leaf cutting-off resulted in higher results in lateral shoot development by the application for the 2nd to the 6th leaves (80-100%) than the practice for the 2nd to the 3rd leaves (20-40%) from shoot tip. Complete removal for the 2nd to 6th leaves from shoot tip made the highest result in lateral shoot development without Promalin spraying.

The management system and profitability were compared for the commercial orchards in the apple producing districts from April to October, 2011. The present study reasonably graded a large fruit as a fruit of heavier than 300g for 'Fuji' and 330g for 'Hongro' apples. As comparing cropping density and yield efficiency, 'Fuji' apples showed 3.28 fruits per TCA of crop density and 0.96 kg per TCA of yield efficiency and 'Hongro' demonstrated 4.04 fruits and 1.01 kg. With the application of the results above, the orchard management systems was classified into 3 classes as the orchard for large-size fruits, medium-size fruits, and combined size fruits. The increase of cropping density made the increase of fruit yield with medium-size fruits in unit area but brought about the decrease of large size fruits. The difference in fruit size failed to make significant differences in fruit characteristics. The orchard management system for producing medium size fruits performed decrease in input cost and improved the profitability in orchard management.

The present study conducted a comparison on tree growth and productivity of high-density apple orchards by several orchard management systems: making scaffolds by heading-back and thinning out pruning (T-1), maintaining scaffolds upward and bearing shoots downward (T-2), managing branches slightly upward without heading-back (T-3), keeping leaders downward and shoots pending (T-4), maintaining leaders high and branches horizontal with severe pinching (T-5), making leaders with lower branches vigorous and upper shoots pending (T-6), and controlling very high planting density with bending branches (T-7). In conclusion, the orchards of (T-5) and (T-6) management systems showed a superior performance in controlling tree growth, productivity, and quality of fruits. Also, superior management efficiency was obtained in the orchards of (T-5) and (T-6).

When apples are picked or selected by grader, the rate of wound occurrence on the skin by apple stalk is remarkably high if the apple was bigger than 3 size during the harvest time. Except this case, the other sizes showed very little similarity. The crop of apple per 1 minute was 2.9kg without cutting fruit stalk, whereas only 1.1kg of the apples were obtained due to cutting the fruit stalk. Thereby, the harvesting without cutting fruit stalk is highly effective in terms of productivity rather than cutting the fruit stalk. As far as the wound occurrence rate on apple skin by apple stalk of distance between grader's dish and accumulated board is concerned, the grader which has no distance showed quite low rate of wound occurrence compared with those grader with 3cm or 8cm distance. When the apple was being stored, there was no difference in firmness between the cut stalk apple and the uncut stalked apple, however there was slightly more weight loss in the cut stalk apple than uncut stalk apple.

Ranging from a variety that a consumer to purchase and consume, and a variety with high quality and pest resistance, sustaining biological diversity as well as hiring global experts who understand breeding policy, it tightly maintains relationship with producer, consumer, and exporter to promote superior species for customized export to exporting country. By carrying out researches on cost saving and how to shorten the period of apple to cultivate, it consolidates its stance as a competent apple exporting country of apple and pear with high competetiveness. In order to compete against apple and pear of New Zealand, farmers argue that they need budget and researchers also argue that "No money, no research." Due to certain limit of governmental budget support, it is believed that it is time to fund our own way to promote apple research center. To come up with the best apple production, all of those who associates with apple such as farmers, researchers, government, exporters, and consumer should do their best to enhance the apple and pear industry.
