        Periodontal regenerative effect of a bovine hydroxyapatite/collagen block in one-wall intrabony defects in dogs: a histometric analysis

        Purpose: The aim of this study was to elucidate the effect of a bovine hydroxyapatite/collagen (BHC) block in one-wall intrabony periodontal defects in dogs. Methods: A one-wall intrabony periodontal defect (4 mm wide and 5 mm deep) was prepared bilaterally at the mesial side of the mandibular fourth premolar in five beagle dogs. After thorough root planing, block-type BHC (4×5×5 mm) was placed on one side. The contralateral defect area did not receive any material as a sham-surgery control. Histological analysis of the sites was performed after an 8-week healing period. Results: Two of five samples in the experimental group healed well without dissipation of the graft materials, and histological analysis revealed excellent regeneration of the periodontal tissues. However, most of the grafted materials had been displaced in the other three samples, leaving only a small portion of the graft. The measured parameters exhibited large standard deviations,and the mean values did not differ significantly between the experimental and sham-surgery control sides. Conclusions: The application of BHC alone-without a barrier membrane-to wide, one-wall intrabony periodontal defects yielded inconsistent results regarding both periodontal regeneration and substantivity of the graft materials. Thus, the use of a barrier membrane for noncontained-type defects is recommended to improve the stability of the grafted material, and to condense it.

        Surface characteristics of a novel hydroxyapatite-coated dental implant

        Purpose: This study evaluated the surface characteristics and bond strength produced using a novel technique for coating hydroxyapatite (HA) onto titanium implants. Methods: HA was coated on the titanium implant surface using a super-high-speed (SHS) blasting method with highly purified HA. The coating was performed at a low temperature, unlike conventional HA coating methods. Coating thickness was measured. The novel HA-coated disc was fabricated. X-ray diffraction analysis was performed directly on the disc to evaluate crystallinity. Four novel HA-coated discs and four resorbable blast medium (RBM) discs were prepared. Their surface roughnesses and areas were measured. Five puretitanium, RBM-treated, and novel HA-coated discs were prepared. Contact angle was measured. Two-way analysis of variance and the post-hoc Scheffe’s test were used to analyze differences between the groups, with those with a probability of P<0.05 considered to be statistically significant. To evaluate exfoliation of the coating layer, 7 sites on the mandibles from 7 mongrel dogs were used. Other sites were used for another research project. In total,seven novel HA-coated implants were placed 2 months after extraction of premolars according to the manufacturer’s instructions. The dogs were sacrificed 8 weeks after implant surgery. Implants were removed using a ratchet driver. The surface of the retrieved implants was evaluated microscopically. Results: A uniform HA coating layer was formed on the titanium implants with no deformation of the RBM titanium surface microtexture when an SHS blasting method was used. Conclusions: These HA-coated implants exhibited increased roughness, crystallinity, and wettability when compared with RBM implants.

        Role of collagen membrane in lateral onlay grafting with bovine hydroxyapatite incorporated with collagen matrix in dogs

        Purpose: The objective of this study was to elucidate the role of collagen membranes (CMs) when used in conjunction with bovine hydroxyapatite particles incorporated with collagen matrix (BHC) for lateral onlay grafts in dogs. Methods: The first, second, and third premolars in the right maxilla of mongrel dogs (n=5) were extracted. After 2 months of healing, two BHC blocks (4 mm×4 mm×5 mm) were placed on the buccal ridge, one with and one without the coverage by a CM. The animals were sacrificed after 8 weeks for histometric analysis. Results: The collagen network of the membranes remained and served as a barrier. The quantity and quality of bone regeneration were all significantly greater in the membrane group than in the no-membrane group (P<0.05). Conclusions: The use of barrier membranes in lateral onlay grafts leads to superior new bone formation and bone quality compared with bone graft alone.

        백서 두개골 결손부에서 키토산의 골조직 재생 유도 효과

        The major goals of periodontal therapy is the functional regeneration of periodontal supporting structures already destructed by periodontal disease as well as the reduction of signs and symptoms of progressive periodontal disease. There have been many efforts to develop materials and therapeutic methods to promote periodontal wound healing. There have been increasing interest on the chitosan made by chitin. Chitin is second only to cellulose as the most abundant natural biopolymer. It is a structural component of the exoskeleton of invertebrates(e.g., shrimp, crabs, lobsters), of the cell wall of fungi, and of the cuticle of insects. Chitosan is a derivative of chitin made by deacetylation of side chains. Many experiments using chitosan in various animal models have proven its beneficial effects. The aim of this study is to evaluate the osteogenesis of chitosan on the calvarial critical size defect in Sprague Dawley rats. An 8 mm surgical defect was produced with a trephine bur in the area of the midsagittal suture. The rats were divided into two groups: Untreated control group versus experimental group with 50mg of soluble chitosan gel. The animals were sacrificed at 2, 4 and 8 weeks after surgical procedure. The specimens were examined by histologic, histomorphometric and radiodensitometric analyses. The results are as follows: 1. The length of newly formed bone in the defects was $102.91{\pm}25.46{\mu}m$, $219.46{\pm}97.81{\mu}m$ at the 2 weeks, $130.95{\pm}39.24{\mu}m$, $212.39{\pm}89.22{\mu}m$ at the 4 weeks, $181.53{\pm}76.35{\mu}m$ and $257.12{\pm}51.22{\mu}m$ at the 8 weeks in the control group and experimental group respectively. At all periods, the means of experimental group was greater than those of control group. But, there was no statistically significant difference between the two groups. 2. The area of newly formed bone in the defects was $2962.06{\pm}1284.48{\mu}m^2$, $5194.88{\pm}1247.88{\mu}m^2$ at the 2 weeks, $5103.25{\pm}1375.88{\mu}m^2$, $7751.43{\pm}2228.20{\mu}m^2$ at the 4 weeks and $8046.20{\pm}818.99{\mu}m^2$, $15578.57{\pm}5606.55{\mu}m^2$ at the 8 weeks in the control group and experimental group respectively. At all periods, the means of experimental group was greater than those of control group. The experimental group showed statistically significant difference to the control group at the 2 and 8 weeks. 3. The density of newly formed bone in the defects was $14.26{\pm}6.33%$, $27.91{\pm}6.65%$ at the 2 weeks, $20.06{\pm}9.07%$, $27.86{\pm}8.20%$ at the 4 weeks and $22.99{\pm}3.76%$, $32.17{\pm}6.38%$ at the 8 weeks in the control group and experimental group respectively. At all periods, the means of experimental group was greater than those of control group. The experimental group showed statistically significant difference to the control group at the 2 and 8 weeks. These results suggest that the use of chitosan on the calvarial defects in rats has significant effect on the regeneration of bone tissue in itself

        CiteSpace를 통한 중국 가정학 연구 동향의 계량서지학적 분석

        본 연구는 중국의 가정학 연구 동향을 파악하기 위하여 중국의 가정학 연구의 시기별 분포, 키워드 분포, 연구자별 분포, 피인용 빈도, 연구기관별 분포 등을 분석하였다. 이러한 연구 목적에 따라 CNKI에서 수집한 데이터는 1984년부터 2022년까지의 149편이 최종 분석을 위해 선정되었다. 수집한 데이터를 CiteSpace를 활용하여 분석한 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 시기별 분포의 경우 2018년부터 2022년에 가장 많은 가정학 연구가 진행되었으며, 특히 2015년과 2020년에 연구가 급증했다. 둘째, 키워드 분포를 알아본 결과 가정교육, 가정철학 등을 중심으로 한 연구가 활발하며, 다양한 연구 분야가 클러스터를 형성하였다. 셋째, 중국 가정학 연구의 주요 기여자는 Li, Xiong, Xia, Wu 등이며, 각자 주로 독립적인 연구를 수행했다. 피인용 빈도는 Li(2006)의 연구가 가장 높았고, 연구기관별로는 지린농업대학이 가장 많은 연구를 발표했다. 본 연구를 통해 중국의 가정학 연구는 사회변화 로 인한 양적 성장에도 불구하고 다양성과 연구 성과에 대한 고려가 부족한 것으로 나타나 학자들의 참여와 실용적인 학문의 응용, 정부 지원 강화, 향후 포괄적이고 질적인 연구를 위한 협력이 필요하다. This study analyzed the trends of home economics research in China by examining the distribution by period, keyword distribution, distribution of researchers, citation frequency, and distribution of research institutions. For this purpose, data collected from CNKI, spanning from 1984 to 2022, resulted in 149 articles selected for final analysis. The analysis conducted using CiteSpace for the bibliometric research method yielded the following results: Firstly, a significant amount of home economics research was conducted between 2018 and 2022, with a notable increase in research in 2015 and 2020. Secondly, the analysis of keyword distribution showed that research centered around home economics education, home economics philosophy, etc., was active, and various research areas formed clusters. Thirdly, the major contributors to China's home economics research were Li, Xiong, Xia, and Wu, who mainly conducted independent research. The research by Li (2006) had the highest citation frequency, and Jilin Agricultural University published the most research among the institutions. This study indicates that despite quantitative growth due to social changes, China's home economics research lacks diversity and consideration of research outcomes. Therefore, participation from scholars, practical application of the discipline, increased government support, and cooperation for future comprehensive and qualitative research are necessary.

        Soft tissue volume changes following gingival grafting for labial gingival recession in the mandibular anterior area: a case report

        This case report presents results for gingival recession coverage following gingival grafting and for gingival biotype enhancements by visualizing soft tissue volume changes using intraoral three-dimensional scanning. A 28 year old female patient with multiple gingival recessions and a 19 year old female patient with a single gingival recession on mandibular anterior area were treated. Root coverage was performed in both cases using autogenous subepithelial connective tissue harvested from palate. Intraoral 3D scan data were obatained presurgery and at 3 months, 1 year, and 2 years postsurgery. The recession areas were recovered successfully by subepithelial connective tissue graft combined with pedicle flap repositioning, and the patients showed neither further recurrence nor post-operative complication. Soft tissue biotype changes were identified by superimposing and analyzing scan data, revealing that gingival biotype was enhanced in both cases. These cases suggest that SCTG could be advantageous in terms of the gingival biotype enhancement, as well as gingival recession coverage, and intraoral 3D scanning might be suitable for assessing post-surgical gingival biotype change.
