Many Subways are under constructing or planning to solve the traffic problems due to rapid growth of economy. However, damages and public complaints are increased due to noise and vibration during construction. Therefore, it is urgently needed to estimate the damage due to the vibration and provide the criteria for vibration tolerance. The purposes of this study are to estimate the vibration characteristics due to subway vibration and to provide vibration tolerance to humans. To accomplish the objectives, various codes from several countries are analyzed. Actual measurements were made to subway structures, on the surface, and nearby structures such as buildings. The measured records were analyzed to determine the linearized response spectrum using the amplication factor suggested by Newmark and Hall. Results obtained from this study provide the fundamental guideline for vibration tolerances and in the future, with measurement on various vibration sources and various types of structures, and development of crack limit spectrum, appropriate vibration tolerances can be developed.
