During refining of stainless-steel melt using the AOD (Argon Oxygen Decarburization) process, slag composition and melt stirring can significantly affect the decarburization behavior and reduction of Cr2O3 in slag. An 18 wt%Cr-8 wt%Ni stainless-steel melt containing 0.2 wt%C was decarburized at 1650 ℃ by different types of slag containing Cr2O3. Melt stirring by Ar or Ar+O2 gas bubbling through a submerged nozzle enhanced the decarburization rate significantly. Pure solid Cr2O3 and liquid slag containing Cr2O3 were far more effective than a solid CaO-Cr2O3 mixture for decarburization. The formation of a stable CaO? Cr2O3 phase in the slag was confirmed by XRD analysis after the decarburization experiment with CaOCr2O3 slag. Therefore, in order to improve the decarburization of stainless-steel melt in low-carbon-content regions, it is essential to increase the liquid fraction of slag. †(Received September 24, 2013)

The Kroll process of magnesium reduction of titanium tetrachloride is used for mass production of zirconium sponges. This study is conducted in a laboratory-scale reactor in order to develop a better understanding of the zirconium sponge formation mechanism in the Kroll reactor with respect to the reaction degrees and reaction time. The MgCl2 produced during the initial stage of the reaction does not sink into the molten magnesium, but remains on the surface of the molten magnesium. As a result, ZrCl4 feed reacts with the Mg exposed on the edge of the molten MgCl2 in the crucible. Therefore, the Zr particles produced at the later reaction stage descend into the molten magnesium at the crucible wall.

Amorphous Fe_(79.7)Si_(9.2)B_(9.7)Ni_(1.4) ribbon alloys were fabricated by a single roll method. To enhance D. C. bias properties, the magnetic and micro-structural changes have been investigated as the variation of annealing time and condition. The D. C. bias properties were found to be directly related to micro-structural changes. Primary α-Fe dendrites with 200~300 ㎚ showed the best D. C. bias properties, which resulted from the magnetic domain wall pinning effect. Due to the differences of cooling rate, the growth shape and distribution of the dendrites is divided into two areas.

본 연구에서는 액상 칼슘에 의한 $ZrO_2$의 직접환원에 대하여 조사하였다. $ZrO_2$의 직접환원에 미치는 Ca과 $ZrO_2$의 몰비, 반응시간, 그리고 반응온도의 영향에 대하여 검토하였다. 실험은 5분에서 60분까지 Ar 분위기의 밀폐된 스테인리스강제의 반응기에서 실시하였다. 반응온도 1223 K, Ca과 $ZrO_2$의 몰비가 3 이상인 조건에서 대부분의 $ZrO_2$는 5분만에 Zr으로 환원되었다. 반응온도가 1337 K이고 Ca을 이론적인 양의 2배를 첨가한 경우 금속 Zr 중의 산소농도는 최저 0.66 wt%를 나타내었다. 그리고 Zr 입자의 형상은 반응온도와 반응시간에 큰 영향을 받는 것으로 나타났다. In this study, direct reduction of $ZrO_2$ using liquid calcium was investigated. The influence of molar ratio of Ca and $ZrO_2$, reaction time and temperature on the reduction behavior of $ZrO_2$ was studied. Experiments were conducted in a closed stainless steel chamber under Ar atmosphere during 5 to 60 minutes. Most of the $ZrO_2$ was reduced to Zr in 5 minutes at 1223 K and 3 Ca/$ZrO_2$ molar ratio. The minimum oxygen content in reduced metal Zr was obtained about 0.66 wt% at 1373 K after 30 minutes and 4 Ca/$ZrO_2$ molar ratio. The morphology of zirconium powder obtained was highly affected by the reaction temperature and reaction time.
