Vol.39 No.-
It seems that Trees Stand on the Hill, one of the Hwang Soonwon's representative novels can be categorized into existential novels. It is because the novel shows an absurd human condition, nihilism, despair from the radical experience of anxiety, and the character' submergence into pessimism. The examples are shown in the following negative reactions to the society. First, an important minor character, Dongho committed a suicide, denying the attribution of animals in human beings. Second, another minor character, Sukki is submerged into a failure, disoriented in life as an existence, Third, the other character, Yoongoo shows the cruel type in his own selfishness. Fourth, the hero of the novel, Hyuntae came to the self-destruction, living a life by the wildlife and the instinct. For those reasons the novel almost comes to an end, showing the defeated aesthetics of the characters on the basis of nihilism and pessimism. However a woman characte, Sukyi tried to show her own will to live, even though she was adultered and casted by the surrounding characters. We can find a light of hope for salvating humans in the novel. We can reach the conclusion that the novel, Trees Stand on the Hill can be categorized into the existential novel with high arttistery and idelism.

Lee, Chung- Joon's short story, "An Insect Story" has such literary features as following. First, the story negates christian original sin like philosophy in existentialism. Second, the protagonist in the short story does not depend on God, but she strives to live her life as a human being in existential situation, showing her own love, fury, and hate. Third, the protagonist does not admit God's almighty power, protest against God's authority in existential condition. Fourth, the idea of existentialism can be extracted out of the protagonist's suicide. she committed a suicide as a sign protagonist's suicide does mean the perfect completion of an existentialist life. The story has the most vivid characteristics of the existentialist idea that have ever published in the history of Korean contemporary novels.

Transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) is an alternative treatment modality for surgical aortic valve replacement in patients at high surgical risk. Transfemoral access is not feasible in many cases with unfavorable iliofemoral anatomy or severe peripheral arterial disease (PAD). Elderly patients with severe aortic valve stenosis have a higher prevalence of PAD due to atherosclerotic degenerative changes in the large and small vessels. Transsubclavian, transapical, and direct access to the ascending aorta by thoracotomy are alternative routes for the TAVI procedure. In this case, we describe a patient with a previous coronary artery bypass graft and bilateral iliac artery stenosis who successfully underwent TAVI using a CoreValve® by transfemoral approach after balloon angioplasty of iliac artery stenosis. Background. The emergency physician(EP)'s interpretation of the electrocardiogram(ECG) is important in determining the disposition of patients evaluated in an emergency department(ED) for chest pain or other cardiac complaints. This is particularly important in life-threatening ECG findings. When the cardiologist's final interpretation was defined as the correct one, the concordance compared with the EP was reported to be 50-60%, while the missed diagnosis of acute myocardial infarction(AMI) was reported as 0.6-8.0%, which could be deleterious to the patient. Method and Material. One hundred and twenty eight ECGs were interpreted by two residents from each year residency. ED records of the study patients were reviewed, and the EP's and cardiologist's ECG interpretations were compared. The ECGs were classified by severity according to the following system: class Ⅰ, normal or minor abnormalities only; class Ⅱ, abnormalities with potential to alter case management; and class Ⅲ, potentially life-threatening abnormalities. Result. The overall concordance between EP's and cardiologist's ECG interpretations was 59.3% and the concordance comparing each year residency showed no statistical significant differences (p value less than 0.05). The underdiagnosed rate was 48.4%, 32.0%, 23.4%, 22.7% for first, second, third and fourth year residency respectively, and 2.3%, 5.5%, 10.9%, 5.5% respectively for the overdiagnosed rate. Conclusion. Although the overall concordance showed a relatively high result in our study, the concordance of class Ⅲ ECG resulted in a much lower rate. Therefore, additional studies are needed to identify variables that contribute to ED ECG misinterpretation and to develop methods to resolve these difficulties. Assessment of department ECG misinterpretation would be useful in focusing on resident and staff education.
Centering around Characteristic qualities of antiheroic figures
Vol.4 No.-
The distingusishing qualities of the characters in Chae Mansik's satarical novels are his description of them as antiheroes. Almost all major characters are the loser, the victim the sick and the ugly. They are defeated, victimized and get ruined without any real resistance to their assailants. The creation of those kinds of antiheroes means that Chae's valuation about the colonized society of Korea was very much negative and he viewed the Korean peoples as a scapegoat of history. Another distinctive marks of his antiheroes are that they have been created by means of set piece characterization. The characters who created by means of set piece characterization are preinvented to be suitable for the roles of receiving biting lines of satire. Characteristic qualities of these persons don't change from beginning to the end. The piognancy of satire in his novels owes much to the technique of setting up antiheroes. Although his novels have been sometimes criticized as commercial ones for the shortcomings of major characters beeing too stereotyped and superficial in description.
