Vol.23 No.4
Pinnal dermatitis caused by Arthroderma vanbreuseghemii in a Rex rabbit
Vol.40 No.1
This report describes a case of pinnal fungal dermatitis caused by Arthroderma vanbreuseghemii in a Rex rabbit diagnosed by clinical signs, macro- and microscopic examination, molecular and phylogenetic analyses. This is the first description of natural A. vanbreuseghemii infection in rabbits in South Korea.
Management of a Severe Cervical Degloving Injury in a Bean Goose (Anser fabalis serrirostris)
Vol.37 No.1
A wild juvenile bean goose (Anser fabalis serrirostris) was rescued after sustaining an extensive degloving injury around the neck and chin region. Except for the degloving injury, physical and radiographic examination detected no other trauma-induced abnormality. On the day of presentation to the hospital, the patient underwent extensive debridement and suturing. A twice-daily force feeding with diluted parrot weaning food was required during the hospitalization due to severe anorexia. On day 18, the bean goose was moved to the aviary to undergo rehabilitation and feeding by itself. Management of the severe degloving injury of the cervical region with medical intervention and nutritional assistance was successful in this case, and the results of this case shows the proper management can be implemented to produce satisfactory outcomes.

Wild owls are widespread in Korea, even being common in urban areas due to the presence of hills or small mountains in and around the cities. This results in high levels of contact between owls and domestic animals. This study investigated the prevalence of avian hematozoan parasite infection in 2 common owl species in Chungbuk province of Republic of Korea for 3-year period: the Eurasian eagle owl (Bubo bubo) and the Brown hawk owl (Ninox scutulata). Peripheral blood smears taken from 56 wild owls were examined by microscopic examination and confirmed by molecular technique. Twenty (36%) of these samples tested positive for the Haemoproteus infection. The infection rate was higher in Brown hawk owls (50%) than in Eurasian eagle owls (33%). These results indicate that the wild owls may act as a reservoir for Haemoproteus infection in susceptible domestic birds.
Successful Management of Subcutaneous Abscess in a Captive Leopard Gecko (Eublepharis macularius)
Vol.39 No.5
An 8 month old leopard gecko (Eublepharis macularius) with a large nodule was referred to our hospital. During the physical examination, the nodule had an unclear boundary from the top of the left eye to the front of the left ear and prevented the opening of the left eye. A hard, cheese-like, yellow, pus-filled nodule was observed. A cytological examination of a pus swab sample revealed pyogranulomatous inflammation with rod-shaped bacteria. Ofloxacin was cho- sen as the empirical topical antimicrobial drug for treatment. The swab samples were inoculated in trypticase soy agar with 5% sheep blood and incubated at 37°C for 24 h. Gram-negative bacteria were identified via Gram staining, and the Kirby-Bauer antimicrobial susceptible disk diffusion test against 24 antibiotics ac- cording to protocol M100-Ed32 of CLSI showed that the fluoroquinolone group (ciprofloxacin and enrofloxacin) was susceptible to the isolated bacteria. Molec- ular identification based on 16S ribosomal RNA gene sequencing confirmed that the isolated bacteria had a 99.85% nucleotide similarity with Serratia surfactant- faciens (GenBank accession no. CP014948). After 1 week, the boundaries of the nodule became clear; thus, the abscess was physically removed by expanding the hole formed above the eye for drainage, and flushing was repeated. After another 1 week, new tissue restoration without scarring was observed. This is a rare case report of the successful management of a subcutaneous abscess and scar-free healing in a lizard.
