This paper presents a multimedia mail system which can transmit and receive multimedia mailing messages on Internet. This mail system is an extension of the existing e-mail system for multimedia data including text, image, MPEG video, and binary data. The MIME(Multipurpose Internet Mail Extension) format, which is an extension of RFC-822 mail format, is used to represent multimedia data, and SMTP(Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) is utilized as a mail transport protocol. The IMAP(Internet Mail Access Protocol), which provides more functions than the widely used POP(Post Office Protocol), is used as a mailbox retrieval protocol. The mail client is implemented on a multimedia PC while the server is implemented on a UNIX system. In the mail system, a mail sending program allows a user to attach binary file such as Postscript file and MPEG compressed video, while a receiving program provides direct interface to application programs to play back received multimedia mail messages.

This paper presents a proposal processing system which can transmit and receive research proposals using the Internet. The system is composed of three parts:principal investigator's terminal, host computer of university's proposal processing department, and host computer of research foundation. The key functions of the system include file download, upload, directory listing, and authentication among principal investigator's terminal, Web server at the university, and Web server at the research foundation. A Web browser is to be installed at researcher's terminal while a Web server and home page for proposal processing need to be constructed at university's host computer and research foundation's host computer, respectively. The Web server provides directory listing and authentication. Personnel at the research foundation can retrieve received proposals and send them to the preassigned reviewers to evaluate the proposals. The reviewers can access the Web server at the research foundation and input scores of the evaluated proposals.

XML 문서의 구조검색을 위한 기존 구조정보 표현방법들은 특정 엘리먼트의 조상, 자손, 형제에 대한 구조검색을 효율적으로 지원하지 못한다. 본 논문에서는 XML 문서의 효율적인 관리와 구조검색을 위해 DTD(Document Type Definition)의 논리적 구조를 따르는 XML 문서의 구조정보 표현을 고안하고 구조정보 추출기를 설계하고 구현한다. 이를 통하여 특정 엘리먼트에 직접적인 접근이 가능하도록 하고, 다양한 구조적 질의를 효과적으로 처리할 수 있도록 한다.

In this paper, we have developed a multimedia mail service system which allows to transmit and receive multimedia mailing messages under TCP/IP network environments. The mailing system is an extension of the existing e-mail system for multimedia data including text, image, MPEG compressed video, and binary data. In order to represent the multimedia data, the MIME(Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions) format is used, which is the extension of RFC-822 mail format. The mail client is implemented on a multimedia PC while the server is implemented on a UNIX systems. As a mailbox retrieval protocol, the IMAP(Internet Message Access Protocol) has been used. We have tested the mailing system for various types of data including MPEG-I compressed video and audio data.
