The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of aquatic complex training and detraining on health-related fitness (muscular strength, muscular endurance, flexibility, cardiorespiratory endurance, body mass index) and psychological function in the elderly. The subjects were assigned to 2 groups: aquatic complex training (ACT) group (n=31, 67±2.76) and aerobic training (AT) group (n=33, 66±4.93). The subjects were asked to participate in aquatic complex training or aerobic training group (3 times/week, 80min/day) for 12 weeks. The subjects were tested on health-related fitness and psychological function tests at the beginning, the end of the 12-week training, and detraining of 2 and 4 weeks. For data analysis mean and standard deviation scores were calculated, and paired t-tests, repeated two-way ANOVA, Tukey post-hoc tests were used. After 12-weeks training, both ACT and AT groups significantly improved muscular strength, muscular endurance, flexibility, and cardiorespiratory endurance. However, after 2-weeks detraining, only ACT group significantly maintained the training effects on muscular strength, muscular endurance and cardiorespiratory endurance. And after 4-weeks detraining, none of groups maintained any training effects on health-related fitness. After 12-weeks training, both groups showed training effect on depression, self-efficacy and physical self-efficacy, However after 2-weeks detraining, only ACT group maintained the training effects on the self-efficacy and physical self-efficacy. And after 4-weeks detraining, none of groups maintained any training effects on the self-efficacy and physical self-efficacy.
