Building upon his previous two novels (namely, Native Speaker and A Gesture Life), which probed the problematic identity of ethnic minority and the exclusionary logic buttressing it, Chang-rae Lee`s latest work titled Aloft shifts its narrative focus onto a story of a white man`s middle class family thereby bringing to bear its thematic scope on the universal problem of human isolation. As the result, Aloft creates the impression of turning away from the restrictive theme of racial politics and its oppressive measures. This view, however, is a misleading one in so far as it presupposes the naturalized image of ‘family.’ In contrast to the conventional image of family qua minimal organic unit of community, a series of incessant conflicts and power struggle underlie the apparent simplicity of this “family story.” And it is against that conceptual backdrop of conflict-driven communality, the text attempts a more sophisticated problematization of such (post)colonial issues as Orientalism, racism, and gender oppression, wherein Jerry, the protagonist and pater familias, metonymically functions as a stereotypical white colonialist. He intentionally distorts the images of ethnic and gender minorities including his own family members, thereby silencing the voices of alterity from the text, which dramatizes “the battle field” between the oppressive rule of sovereignty and the resistance to it. This study argues that Aloft depicts family as a mirror and microcosm of the social as such, where every subject is, without exception, forced to engage in hegemonic power struggle not only for recognition but for survival.

본 연구는 Siphon을 배수제어장치로 이용한 Cherepnov송수기의 거동을 예측할 수 있는 수학적모델을 구성하는데 목적이 있다. Cherepnov송수기의 작동과정은 23단계로 이루어진다. 송수기의 각 단계별 작동과정은 에너지방정식과 연속방정식을 이용하여 표현하였고 또 이를 계산하기 위하여 전산프로그램을 작성하였다. 본 연구의 결과로 얻어진 전산프로그램은 실험조건과 동일한 수리학적 조건 및 기하학적 조건을 입력하여 실행할 수 있었으며 그 결과는 실험에 의한 각 탱크의 수위곡선, 공기압곡선, 효율과 작동주기를 잘 재현하였다. 따라서 본 연구에서 구성한 수학적모델은 Cherepnov송수기를 설계하고자 할 때 송수기의 제원등을 검토하는데 유용하게 사용될 수 있으리라 판단되었다. This paper presents a mathematical model which simulates the Cherepnov water lifter, that can lift water without the use of external energy such as electricity. A theoritical study was conducted to reveal the characteristics of the Cherepnov water lifter that was continuously operated with the aid of the siphon. The mathematical model wal composed of the continuity equation and energy equation, and was coded using FORTRAN language. In this study, the govering flow equation of the lifter were derived and the computer programs of the equations were worked out. The accuracy of the theoretical equations and their solutions was checked by laboratory experimentation. The mathematical model that simulate the Cherepnov water lifter is appeared to be good to predict the behavior of Cherepnov water lifter. Therefore, the mathematical model and the simulation method used in this study could be used in designing of the Cherepnov water lifter.

In this study, the effects of the various conditions of frosting and defrosting on the behavior of defrosting in a fin-tube heat exchanger have been examined experimentally. The electric heater is used for defrosting in a fin-tube heat exchanger It is shown that there are several local maxima in the water draining rate. The amount of residual water on the heat exchanger after the completion of defrosting is kept constant due to surface tension on the heat exchanger. Without considering the degradation of the thermal performance due to the frosting, the defrosting efficiency is improved with increasing amount of the frost irrespective of the frosting condition. The defrosting behavior is affected by the frosting density as well as the frost accumulation, which vary with the experimental operating conditions during the frosting period. The heat loss to the surrounding air decreases, and the melting and defrosting efficiencies show high values with decreasing heat input.

In this study, the defrosting behaviors according to the surface characteristics in the fin-tube heat exchanger is experimentally examined. It is found that the draining rate of the hydrophilic and hydrophobic heat exchangers are evenly dispersed during defrosting, compared with that of the bare one. It is caused by the high density frost for the hydrophilic heat exchanger, and surface characteristic for the hydrophobic heat exchanger, respectively. The rest period of the hydrophilic and hydrophobic heat exchangers are shorter and their weight of residual water are smaller than those of the bare heat exchanger The hydrophilic and hydrophobic heat exchangers are more effective than the bare one in terms of defrosting efficiency, and the hydrophobic heat exchanger is better than the hydrophilic one.

The purpose of this work is to Investigate the pressure drop and the heat transfer characteristics in the channel of plate heat exchanger with crossed-discrete ribs. The flow is assumed to be three-dimensional, laminar and periodically fully developed. Computations have been carried out for angles of attack from $0^{\circ}$ to $90^{\circ}$ and ratios of rib height from 0.15 to 0.46 for various values of Reynolds and Prandtl numbers. The heat transfer was improved by inclined ribs generating helical vortices and secondary flows. The results show that the pressure drop has a maximum value at $70^{\circ}$ and the heat transfer has a maximum value at $45^{\circ}$. As the rib height increases, the pressure drop and the heat transfer increase quadratically, and the increasing rate of pressure drop is higher than that of the heat transfer. As Reynolds number increases, the pressure drop increases in proportion to the square of Reynolds number and the heat transfer increases linearly.

This study has been performed experimentally to measure the frost properties over a cold flat plate in order to obtain the correlations of the frost properties with various environmental parameters. Correlations of the frost surface temperature, thickness, density, and thermal conductivity are presented along with the experimental results as a function of environmental parameters, distance from the leading edge of test plate, and time. These correlations can be used to predict the frost properties with a maximum error of 8% in the following ranges : air temperature 15∼25$\^{C}$, relative humidity 60∼80%, air velocity 1∼3m/s and cooling plate temperature -15∼-25$\^{C}$.

The integral boundary layer equation for the air side and the diffusion equation for the frost layer are numerically analyzed in order to predict the behavior of frost layer growth. The thickness and density of the frost layer obtained from the present study agree well with those of previous numerical results and experimental data with a maximum error of 13%. The characteristics of heat and mass transfer within the frost layer and the frost layer growth along the flow direction are investigated by performing numerical analysis. The effects of operating conditions on the frost layer growth are also examined.
