N/A Coating materials for Evaporative Pattern Casting (EPC) process have been developed to investigate the effect of refractories on coating material properties. Three types of developed and one foreign coating materials were used. The former designated as A, B, C and the latter named S.K. The refractory of coating material A is spherical shape of zirconia, and the ones of B, C and S.K. is flake shape of mica. Strength, permeability at room and elevated temperature, anti-sand attachability and carbon residuary were evaluated at each coating materials. Permeability measurement device for elevated temperature was also designed. The zirconia type of coating material had excellent permeability, on the other hand the mica type had good strength and anti-sand attachability. It was found that the refractories were not broken during casting, so permeability indicated same trend at both room and elevated temperature. Based on results, coating material contained small size of mica which is designated as B has the best combination for cast iron. (Received September 29, 1997)

N/A The hydrogen gas pick-up problem that can occur during Lost Foam Casting was investigated by reduced pressure test and practical Lost Foam Casting. The proper test pressure of reduced pressure test was determined by experiments not to use polystyrene and gas contents of the melt were calculated from density measurement results. There sults showed that the hydrogen pick-up increased with the increased amount of polystyrene that was replaced by melt. The hydrogen pick-up was larger in the case of no degassed melt than that of degassed melt. So the hydrogen pick-up depended on the initial hydrogen content of the melt and the contact time of the melt with the decomposed gas phase. The mold evacuation decreased the hydrogen pick-up and increased the flow length of melt during Lost Foam Casting. And the error of calculated hydrogen pick-up was calculated by numerical method.

N/A The effect of mold density and evacuation on surface defect of high chromium cast iron upon EPC process was investigated. Under evacuation of 0.1~0.3 atm, surface defects were carbon defect, burn on and misrun. Carbon defect was augmented by increasing mold density from 0.011 g/㎤ to 0.03 g/㎤ under evacuation of 0.1~0.3 atm, but carbon defect was decreased by increasing evacuation from 0.1 to 0.3 atm. Burn-on wasn`t found under evacuation of 0.1 atm regardless of mold density, but burn-on was augmented by increasing evacuation from 0.2 to 0.3 atm and decreased by reducing mold density. Misrun was only found under 0.1 atm evacuation and 0.011 g/㎤ mold density.
