        Bare Fragment Answers as Elliptical Pseudoclefts

        The paper attempts to provide a syntactic analysis of fragment answerswithout case markers in Korean. These bare fragment nominalsfrequently occur as answers corresponding to wh-words in question ininformal daily conversations. Given the propositional semantics andobservance of the Binding Theory, this paper argues that a barefragment answer is derivable from a full-fledged sentence, not acanonical sentence correlate but a pseudocleft one. Bare fragmentanswers are successfully derivable from the proposed pseudocleftstructure which has the topic phrase elided, the informal copula yaphonetically null, and the pre-copula position filled with the focused NPthat turns out to be a bare FA.

        Enhancing digital literacy: Illustrative examples of PBL in humanities

        This study explores the effectiveness of Project-Based Learning (PBL) class designs in enhancing digital literacy among humanities college students, focusing on Russian and English majors. Based on two major classes at G University's College of Humanities in the spring semester of 2023, designed as PBL courses with the goal of enhancing digital literacy, this research investigates the impact of the blended approach. The study provides illustrative PBL class designs and outcomes, showcasing how PBL seamlessly integrates digital literacy competencies into humanities education. Furthermore, a comprehensive survey employs Likert scale questions and multiple-choice inquiries to quantify students' perspectives on the efficacy of integrating digital literacy into discipline-specific education. This study highlights the significance of PBL class designs in nurturing digital literacy among humanities students and offers valuable insights for educators designing impactful digital literacy courses tailored to students' specific needs.

        Gender-Neutral Pronouns He and They

        This paper attempts to investigate the Korean EFL students’ understanding of singular they in comparison with gender-neutral he. When it comes to the choice of third person singular pronouns in gender-indeterminant contexts, prescriptive grammar prefers gender-neutral he, while descriptive grammar recommends singular they, among other alternative pronoun forms. As grammar books and guideline sources gradually adopt singular they as a proper, or a better, pronoun candidate compared to gender-neutral he, an experimental study was designed to examine how Korean learners of English acquire this recent language change in EFL contexts. In a naturalness judgment task, the Korean EFL learners judged singular they in informal contexts as less natural than in formal contexts and even as unnatural when the antecedents included ‘every/any,’ though it has been reported that native speakers prefer singular they in informal contexts rather than in formal contexts.

        Occipital dysplasias in five dogs showing various neurologic signs of unknown origin were diagnosed with clinical examination and skull radiographic assessment at this university teaching hospital. The severities of occipital dysplasia were Grade III in four dogs and Grade II in one dog. Major clinical signs were ataxia and convulsion. In skull radiographs, there were dorsal extents of the foramen magnum reached nuchal crest in all cases. Also, hydrocephalus or vertebral malformation was complicated in three cases.

        Properties of Syntactic Focus in Some Free Word Order Languages

        This study proposes that a certain type of focus involving exhaustive interpretation triggers syntactic movement and further examines its semantico-pragmatic factors across free word order languages such as Hungarian, Korean, Japanese, and Russian. Given that the focus item, which is interpreted as exhaustive, occupies dislocated positions in the four languages, the focus is claimed to bear a strong feature [+exhaustive] in numeration and to undergo syntactic movement in order to have the feature checked off before Spell-out. Under this claim, the syntactic movement is naturally linked with the focus interpretation, avoiding the violation of Inclusiveness Principle. Furthermore, the current study discusses parametric differences in realizing exhaustive focus from the syntactic perspective.

        Intervening Adverbs and Interlanguage Grammars by Korean EFL Learners.

This paper aims to investigate the acquisition of intervening adverbs by Korean learners of English at various developmental stages. The ESL/EFL acquisition of verb-adverb-complement has been analyzed with respect to optional raising (Eubank et al. 1997, Choi 2009, among others) and Case adjacency (Zobl 1988 and White 1989). The current study employed a truth-value judgment task (TJT), a partial replication of Eubank et al.’s, and a grammaticality judgment task (GJT) in order to examine effects of the two reported factors and the interaction of Case adjacency with pronoun morphology on the acquisition of intervening adverbs by the Korean middle school and college students. The findings revealed that optional raising did not play any significant role contra predictions based on Eubank et al.‘s proposal. An interesting divergence between the learners at the earlier acquisition stages and the advanced learners appeared in the interaction of the Case adjacency with morphological case marking. The low proficiency learners tended to accept the sequence verb-adverb-pronoun whereas the advanced learners rejected it.

        Korean is known to exhibit subject-object asymmetry in “Case drop,” whereas in English asymmetry shows up in the form of “Case adjacency.”" This study sketches out and argues for the analyses which permit us to capture asymmetries found in the two languages under a single notion of P-visibility of arguments. We assume that all arguments must be overtly (or physically) identified at PF to become visible in the sensorimotor system, which we will refer to as “P-visibility” for simplicity. Grammar permits language users to associate P-visible entities with some aspect of LF interpretive features within a designated syntactic domain. In this study, we regard P-visibility as an interface condition under the minimalist approach. .

        Effects of Cause and Animacy on the EFL Acquisition of Attributive Psych Adjectives

        The paper aims to investigate the acquisition of attributive participle adjectives derived from two types of psych verbs: Experiencer-Object (EO) verbs and Experiencer-Subject (ES) verbs. It has been argued that participle adjectives ending with -ing (Ving adjectives), different from those ending in -ed (Ved adjectives), involve a zero CAUSE morpheme (Duffield 2005), which is salient with inanimate nouns when the morpheme is suffixed to EO verbs (Zhang 2007, 2015). For a fuller picture of the roles of the zero CAUSE and animacy in the EFL acquisition of Ved and Ving adjectives, this paper explores both of the psych verb types (EO and ES) from which their deverbal adjectives are derived, as well as the participle types (Ved and Ving), and animacy of modified nouns (animate and inanimate). Analyses of acceptability judgments by Korean adult learners of English reveal that the less proficient learners were not sensitive to animacy and that even the advanced learners were ignorant of the zero CAUSE but sensitive to argument structure, yielding overgeneralization with ill-formed Ving adjectives derived from ES verbs. The results also show that the less proficient groups preferred Ving adjectives to Ved ones and had difficulty detecting incongruity of Ved adjectives derived from EO verbs with inanimate nouns, which is interpretable as strong L1 transfer.

        Formality and Syntactic Dependency in the L2 Acquisition of Preposition Stranding and Pied-piping by Korean College EFL Learners

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the acquisition of preposition stranding (PS) and preposition pied-piping (PP) in relative clauses by Korean learners of English. These alternating constructions have been reported to be restricted by the level of formality and the syntactic dependency of a prepositional phrase on the predicate verb (Hoffman 2005; Ko 2009). The current study investigates whether the Korean EFL learners can recognize formality and dependency and appropriately use the alternating patterns compared to native English speakers. The findings of the present study showed that the learners' grammatical and pragmatic knowledge was not complete in that they failed to associate syntactic dependency with obligatory stranding or pied-piping constructions and their pragmatic sensitivity to formality was not always mapped onto a proper structure.         Preposition Stranding in the EFL Acquisition of Embedded Wh-questions

        This study investigates the acquisition of preposition stranding in the syntactic contexts, such as elliptical wh-questions and non-elliptical ones, by Korean speakers learning English. An acceptability judgment task was conducted to examine the effects of clause types (non-elliptical vs. elliptical), preposition placement (preposition stranding vs. preposition pied-piping), and the V-P dependency (Dependent vs. Independent vs. Irrelevant). The results showed that preposition stranding was rejected in elliptical wh-questions while preposition fronting was favored over preposition stranding in non-elliptical wh-questions. Though the results were seemingly contradictory to the saliency hypothesis proposed by Bardovi-Harlig (1987), the study will provide an Optimality-theoretic analysis for the learners’ interlanguage grammars by adopting the constraint ranking proposed by Choi (2008).
