Background/Aims: Polyethylene glycol (PEG) solution is the most widely used bowel preparation agent for colonoscopy because of its safety and efficacy in colon cleansing. It has been hypothesized that the timing of colon preparation may influence the quality of colon cleansing, and therefore affect the diagnostic yield of colonoscopy. The aim of this study was to determine the optimal interval of time between complete ingestion of PEG and performing colonoscopy. Methods: We prospectively enrolled 1,355 patients who had undergone a PEG-based bowel preparation on the day of colonoscopy in 11 tertiary hospitals in Korea between March 2008 and February 2009. All colonoscopies were performed in the afternoon. The start time of PEG ingestion, completion time of PEG ingestion, dose of PEG ingested, start time of colonoscopy, and the quality of bowel cleansing were recorded. Results: There was no difference of cleansing quality of bowel preparation between three groups of less than 7 hours of elapsed time (2≤ and <3 hours, 3≤ and <5 hours, 5≤ and <7 hours). However, group of more than 7 hours of elapsed time presented poor cleansing quality than others (P<0.01). Conclusions: If >7 hours elapses after ingestion of PEG, the quality of bowel preparation is poor. Therefore, depending on the time colonoscopy is scheduled, the start time of PEG ingestion may need to be adjusted. (Intest Res 2010;8:24-29)
실시간 ECG 모니터링 시스템을 위한 QRS 검출 알고리듬의 개발

In this paper, we developed a QRS detection algorithm for the real-time ECG(Electrocardiogram) monitoring system. The algorithm based on the Pan and Tompkins's method included a new peak detection method for the QRS detection. To be identified as the QRS peak, the derivatives of the peak must have negative values at least for some constant time and the peak value itself should not be less than any peak values around the peak. When applied the proposed method to the real-time ECG monitoring system, the failed detection rate was low enough for the system automation. Also, the performance of the proposed method outperformed the Pan and Tompkin's algorithm when tested with the MIT/BIH database.

Multiple-model speech recognizer has been shown to be quite successful in noisy speech recognition. However, its performance has usually been tested using the general speech front-ends which do not incorporate any noise adaptive algorithms. For the accurate evaluation of the effectiveness of the multiple-model frame in noisy speech recognition, we used the state-of-the-art front-ends and compared its performance with the well-known multi-style training method. In addition, we improved the multiple-model speech recognizer by employing N-best reference HMMs for interpolation and using multiple SNR levels for training each of the reference HMM.

A systematic study of the role of transfer films on friction properties was performed with various temperatures in the brake system. An NAO friction material specimens containing 9 ingredients were tested using a pad-on-disk type friction tester. A new method of measuring the transfer film thickness was developed by considering the electrical resistance of the transfer film using a 4-point probe technique. The properties of transfer film such as surface morphology and film distribution vaied according to the relative amount of graphite and magnesium oxide. By using SEM, it was possible to obtain information about the chemical composition of the transfer film. Results showed that there detected a threshold value of the relative amount of a two active materials to maintain a certiain thickness of a transfer film. Results also showed that formation of friction layer generated on the friction surface was strongly affected by chemical action of two ingredients during sliding due to chemical reaction of solid lubricants at different interface temperature. The results suggested that no apparent relationship between transfer film thickness and the average friction coefficient was founded and friction characteristics were affected more by the property of the solid lubricant and abrasive in the material.
