Objectives:Hwa-byung has been studied clinically for several years and introduced as Korean Culture- Bound Syndrome. However, the definition and the diagnostic method are not yet clarified, and there has not been any sufficient comparative study on this disease entity. This study was conducted to determine the clinical symptoms and the profile of the neurocognitive functions in Hwa-byung(HB) and Major Depressive Disorder(MDD), and We wish to identify any critical factors that differentiate the disorders. Methods:A total of 102 participants were examined, including 34 participants with MDD, 34 with HB, and 34 healthy controls. The MDD and HB patients were recruited from among inpatients and outpatients at the National Medical Center for the period from May to December of 2004. As a major diagnostic tool of MDD, diagnostic reference of DSM-IV-TR was used and as HB's diagnostic tool, We used computerized neurocognitive function test. Psychiatric symptomatology was evaluated by the Beck Depression Inventory(BDI), and Symptom Checkist-90-Revision(SCL-90-R). Oneway ANOVA, Scheffe post-hoc test and Chi-Squre Tests were used for statistical analysis. Results:The participants in three groups did not differ in terms of age, sex, and education. Assessment of BDI indicated that the MDD group had significantly higher total score than the HB group. MDD and HB groups showed significantly higher total scores on the SCL-90-R in comparison to the controls. The MDD group was found to have significantly more symptoms of depression than the HB group, based on the depression subscale of the SCL-90-R. The computerized neurocognitive function test suggest several results 1) Within the memory domain, it was found that one of the two memory tests in MDD and HB groups were significantly impaired in comparison to the control group. 2) Within the attention domain, it was found that only the MDD group was significantly impaired in comparison to the control group. 3) Within the higher cortical function domain, it was found that significant impairment exist in MDD group and HB group compared to the control group; the severity of impairment was found to be more profound in the MDD group than in the HB group. Conclusion:These results suggest that both HB group and MDD group have significantly decreased neurocognitive function than the control group, and neurocognitive function of the HB group is better than that of the MDD group.

국내체류 외국인은 2007년 8월 100만 명을 돌파한 후, 2008년 12월 현재 115만명에 달하는 등 갈수록 증가하고 있다. 외국인 이주노동자가 다수를 차지하는 외국인 커뮤니티는 각종 사회ㆍ문화적 갈등을 발생시키며 강력범죄와 조직폭력범죄, 국제범죄조직과의 연계 등 외국인 범죄를 증가시키는 요인이 되고 있다. 또한 서울ㆍ경기 등 수도권 지역에 빠른 속도로 확대되어가는 외국인들의 집단 거주 지역은 외국인 상호간 또는 내국인을 상대로 한 절도ㆍ폭력ㆍ강도ㆍ강간 등 각종 범죄와 한국사회에 부적응, 소외감, 인종간 문화적 갈등으로 인한 각종 사회문제의 온상이 되고 있다. 이민자들로 이루어진 국가인 미국이나 유럽과 같은 다문화국가나 뉴질랜드, 일본과 같이 많은 외국인 유입이 있었던 선진 국가들은 외국인 체류질서 확립과 치안확보, 사회통합을 위한 체계적인 외국인정책을 꾸준히 추진하여 왔다. 미국의 경찰은 사전 범죄예방에 초점을 맞추는 지역사회경찰활동(Community Policing)철학을 바탕으로 소수인종 커뮤니티의 대표자들과 구성원이 직접 참여하는 다양한 치안활동을 실시하고 있다. 뉴질랜드 국가경찰은 '다문화사회를 대비한 치안 종합 계획'을 수립하여 거시적이고 장기적인 비전을 가지고 외국인 문제 대처 전략을 시행해 나가고 있다. 국내에 살고 있는 외국인들은 서울과 경기도 안산 등지에서 집단 거주지를 형성하여 살며 외국인 커뮤니티를 형성하고 있다. 중국ㆍ동남아출신의 국내 결혼이민자 및 유학생도 꾸준히 늘어나고 있다. 다인종ㆍ다문화사회로 진행에 따른 국내 외국인 커뮤니티의 범죄문제는 앞으로 우리 사회의 중요한 이슈가 될 것이다. 이에 대처하기 위한 경찰의 전략은 외국인 거주 인구수만을 기준으로 한 특정지역에 한정된 치안활동을 하는 것에서 벗어나, 보다 거시적이고 종합적인 관점에서의 문제 접근이 있어야 한다. 다양한 외국인 커뮤니티에 대한 특화된 범죄예방 등 치안확보 대책을 수립해야 한다. 그리고 외국인정책은 많은 정부기관, 민간단체, 산업체 등이 복잡하게 관련되어 있기 때문에 다양한 수요자의 요구와 참여, 환류가 함께 이루어져야 한다. 또한 우리국민들이 다문화현상을 열린 마음으로 받아들이고 외국인과 더불어 살아가는 사회 분위기를 만들어 가는 것도 중요하다. The number of foreigners residing in the country surpassed the 1 million mark in August, 2007 and reached 1.15 million in December, 2008 and is still rapidly rising. Growing foreign communities, main constituents of which are migrant workers cause not only social, cultural conflicts but felonious, organized crimes in Korean society. Foreign residential districts which are rapidly spreading in Seoul metropolitan area and Gyunggi province became nests of violent crimes such as robbery, assaults and rape. United States, the country of immigration and multi-cultural society such as European countries, New Zealand and Japan have steadily developed systematic policies in order to securely control and integrate foreigners into their society. The American police accentuate community policing focusing on prevention of crime, carry out various activities to consolidate new immigrants and the minority groups allowing their representatives to participate police services. The New Zealand police established comprehensive strategic policy toward ethnic communities with macroscopic view to cope with foreign immigrants. The foreign residents in Korea gather and form their own residential districts in Seoul and Ansan city, Gyunggi province etc. International marriage immigrant women and college students from China and Southeast Asian countries are increasing as well. Advancing in multi-racial, cultural society will provoke important issues of foreign communities' crimes. The police strategy to cope with these crimes should be a broader and more comprehensive approach, not simply focusing on geographical activities. Specifically designed policies and plans should be adopted to various foreign communities. These strategies should comprise involvement and feedback of diverse demands of various governmental and civilian institutions which are closely related with police operations in many folds. More importantly, Korean people should accept multi-cultural society with open heart and live harmoniously with foreigners.
